Hey folks, I just left Berkeley for Boston, which is a little depressing in the middle of winter. I'm looking for a job out here--are any of the outdoor/climbing companies (climbing holds, tents, backpacks, clothes, biners or pro, stoves, etc) based in MA? Small start ups?

Thanks, Pete

Look up Rajmit. He will know where to buy stoves and pots.

Maybe I'll look him up. We can try to burn snow together, and I'll find out if he really looks like Ouch's picture.

LOL! Tell us if that picture is really Ramjet. Inquiring minds want to know.

There's gotta be an REI or EMS out there...

Google says there is REI, Patagonia, and lots more in Boston area. Of course, Rajmit may have bought all their stock for testing in the parking lot.

EMS is HQ'd in the area, I want to say Peterborough, NH or something like that. They obviously don't make anything there, but maybe they spec stuff out from that office, who knows.

If you have to work retail to make cash, there are EMS and REI stores all over the place, though many of them are urban fleece emporia; I walked into the Harvard Square EMS once and noticed that at least half of the little climbing gear they had was marked with the wrong price tag. Wish I'd noticed the $24 "reverso" that looked strangely like a grigri before I pointed the mistakes out to a salesman. There is also Hilton's Tent City downtown, which is a great little retailer. Hell, I'd call them up, see if you can get a manager on the phone, and ask which of their suppliers are local.

Job! Forget finding a job. Pick up some ice gear and start ice climbing. Though I hear conditions aren't the best this year.

Check out the gym in Woburn. You'll meet plenty of people there from the many climbing clubs, college mountaineering groups, etc.

There's terrific bouldering out at Hammond Pond in Chestnut Hill, and a great retaining wall traverse one stop past Fenway on the D Line, right across the street from the station's small parking lot.
Look for a copy of Boston Rocks for all the metro climbing beta.

And find Anna's Taquiria on Harvard and/or Beacon St. at Coolidge Corner in Brookline. There's also one at Porter Square in Cambridge. Get the grilled quesadilla with pork and sweet potatoes. Bite into one of them, and Berkeley mex won't feel so far away.

Get in touch if you want a tour of the Gunks.
