I'm sure that John and Dean are hard at work pitching the movie rights to The Stonemasters - California Rock Climber of the Seventies. In the meantime, we ought to start work on The Prequel. Maybe we can even horn-in on some of the royalties! After all, prequels worked for "Star Wars", and Lord knows there were some wars between "stars" BITD!

Now... We need to keep in mind that "Stonemaster"™©® has multiple meanings. It can refer to a small exclusive group from a bygone era, or (as it turned out) it can be used as a collective noun for any aspiring climber with connections to the Valley and/or Tahquitz/Suicide—a mindset, rather than a guild.

So here's the game... Post a photo of yourself, or someone you know, at the time when they were just getting into the stonemaster game. No too-cute baby photos, Roy, just those innocent images of your climbing genesis.

Here are two:

I still submit that this picture really tells a story of a much younger Largo. From the Accomazzo collection:

Actually, Studly, I think it's pretty bold to go hunting rattlers with a Chouinard hammer in your holster! Foreshadowings of things to come...

Great idea. There are several other prequels that could be done...

Harding-Robbins prequel

Also a Wilts era prequil based on the Ellen Wilts' memoirs.

Also an Dawson-Clyde prequil with the early Sierra Clubbers tearing about the Sierra's building giant bonfires in alpine meadows. Sex, drugs, and big-band jazz.

Great photos Rob, Largo looks like a mere child.

Jan, my avitar is fairly current, but the historical pictures are still loads of fun.

Where'd you ever find that photo, Robs? I was 16. Barely. First trip to the Domelands.

E or Bolton might have a few comments to make about living in the past.
We have had those conversations. I would like to see more pictures like John's, of what you're all up to now, climbing or otherwise. The past is a nice place to visit, but you can't live there.

Largo... that looks like a lotta fun, but at "our" age, it seems like you would want some combo forearm and elbow pads on that thing for the just-in-case situations. Don't know about you, but I'm slow healing up these days, and can't stand sitting around waiting for stuff to knit.

I've heard the words "mountain unicycle" and never really thought about it much till just now looking at Largo's photo. That is knarly stuff.

Still managing to find fun in the mountains...

Eddy is still pretty spry and always game to get out. We had a fine morning day before yesterday at a local spot.

Only climbing move was a tricky mantle onto the snowbank created by the snowplows. Ed used some some aid, a Whippet pole, but I freed it.

Hit the stairmaster for some cardio.

I may be a bit slower, but I was too fast for Ed using my point and shoot.

Be here now.

Largo and company...

Shrug off the disrespect. It's just petty jealousy.

These punks (and many of them are far too old themselves to lean on their youth anymore) are the ones that should be out there proving themselves as we did. Whole lot of nothing but bitterness for all the missed opportunities.

A Stonemasters film productions company to capitalize on all this would be fun.

I think most of us are too busy climbing and don't have the money.

Jello is working on his.

I'm sure Conrad is totally rich from his film.

180 Degree's South.....

Never mind. Let's just go climbing.

Both of those photos look like Middle Cathedral routes. What routes?

Middle is awesome, you look up and it looks black, loose and scary. You look down and it's all golden, white and pristine. Some of the best in the Valley.
