Today is the anniversary of Kent State massacre. It never leaves my thoughts...a child of the times. Susan

Never leaves my thoughts either. That was a momentous and frightening day that scarred our national conscience. National Guardsmen were shooting and killing university students for protesting the Vietnam War. It was insane.

Yeah. Made an indelible mark on me. I was 17 and a senior in HS.
A few months later, my classmate, Jonathan Jackson, got killed while shooting up a Marin County court room trying to free his brother, George. JJ killed a bunch of folks. Crazy time, indeed.

From what I have read, why they fired was never determined: lots of conflicting reports, people not talking and/or lying, no one clearly in charge, all the things you would expct from this type of fiasco/disaster . Anyone know anything more?

And lets not forget just 10 days after Kent State there were two students killed and several injured at Jackson State in Mississippi. Took a major back page to Kent State...I think we all know why. Susan
Gene: yes, love Buffalo Springfield...did you know they are actually doing a reunion tour? I think they are going to be in Oakland around the first of June. I've never figured out why those old rockers look like they have aged so much (drugs?) and I'm sure I don't look like I've aged ALL that much..... ha ha ha Susan

My friend showed me his Kent State yearbook from that year in the early-1990s. Looking at those images was difficult for me. The event caused my friend to drop out and go on to be a leader in outdoor education. Democracy is not free...

I was 18 at the time and it scared the hell out of me.
Isn't our government over in Syria defending the people protesting against their government?
Go figure.

When fascism takes hold, people get killed.
Kent State cracked the growing American fascism of the the 1960's. An army of young people rose up to oppose what history has shown was wrong.
Today this is happening across the Middle East at a much higher cost. IT's time to bring down the fascist oil wealth.

Shlt happens. Somebody probably threw a rock and things escalated.
Whoever shot first will have to live with the consequences.
I knew a woman who was there and turned to find her room mate dead next to her.
That's not her in the photo.

Ummm, it's that day again, 43 years after the event. End of innocence as what we fought for, fellow students were being killed. Jackson State occurred 10 days after. Some call for reopening of the investigation regarding if the Guards were actually ordered to fire.
I was a student at University of Penn and as we listened to a static filled radio we thought they were saying "Penn State" instead of "Kent State" Several days later about 100,000 protesters converged on Washington. It was scary as Guardsmen lined the tops of buildings with rifles. We all wondered, "were we next" RIP: Allison, Sandra, Jeffery, William. They would have been my age.

I was at a rally in Sproul Plaza. The speaker was handed a note and a very chilled expression came over his face as he announced the carnage from Kent State. My patriotism died on that day.
