Not sure if I am doing this right. My girlfriends and I met some climbers at Joshua Tree a few weeks ago and they said this was a good place for information. We are mostly new to climbing. We met some guys at BurningMan last year and they got us all stoked to try climbing. We have been having fun so far but it sure is hard when you value fingernails lol. I guess my main reason for logging on here is to see if it is wise to buy used equipment or not. I am a dancer and my income is off and on and I am still not sure if I will really climb alot but it would be nice to at least have my own harness and shoes. Anyone have suggestions?

depends on the gear. I will buy used nuts, biners, etc, but stay clear of any soft goods, like a rope, harness, or slings. Just to hard to know what the history is

Post a sign on HVCC bulletin board that you will fire dance for good gear. I'll bet you will have a fine rack in no time.

You should contact Weld_It; he'll give you lots of great advice, and take you to K2 too, maybe.

Climbing shoes are a real pain to shop for. You can go to an REI and try on a bunch of different shoes and find a brand, model, and size that works for you. Then you can shop for deals on ebay for that specific size and brand. I'd say if you can find a pair of "like new" shoes for $50 or under that's a good deal. Unless you have tiny feet, in which case you win the jackpot. I see small shoes (women's size 6 and under) on clearance, brand new for $10-$20 all the time.

Climbing gyms usually have used harnesses and shoes. If they're reputable, they won't sell you a questionable harness. Used shoes are a great way to save money.
You can get a good new harness for $50, why try to scrounge?

Don't scrounge on your belay device either, get a new, simple, inexpensive one. You don't need to spend more than $25
http://www.supertopo.com/reviews/gear.php?cat=1216&c=belay+device
You should be very careful of the critical safety items that can have hidden damage. I don't even consider used helmets, ropes or 'biners unless I know the original owner.
Used nuts, cams, slings etc are easily inspected.
At least half the comments you receive here will be snarky, some downright rude.
If you get serious about climbing, there are a lot of people around here who can give you excellent advice.
Go For It!

Wow I didnot expect a response to this so soon but that is great. Thanks for the information hightrverse. That is a good idea about those shops. There is an REI pretty close to me and I will check that. Yes I do like my nails but they are mostly fake from breaking them all the time. I have a nickname but it is not printable here so Tawny happens to be my name but I'm glad you think it's hot apagee. You can thank my parents.

Tawny, this isn't really a climbing forum...it's a spleen networking site.
Bryan is right about small size shoe closeouts at bargain prices. Surf the internet under climbing shoe. But you're best fitting your first pair at a climbing shop for a precise fit. (I have two pair, near new, in the size 8 1/2 to 9 womens sizes... I'd like to give up to a good mother...but I live in Idaho and I'd need an accurate foot tracing from you to get you a correct fit)
Best wishes climbing !

Somehow I thought this site might be alot different than the entertainment world that I work in but looking at some of the discussions here and some of these posts I see lots of the crazyness I see in LA all the time. Is this the norm around here or is this some weekend wierdness?
