A mystery I've been trying to solve... Looks homemade, or has anyone seen this type of metal hardware anywhere else?

Twin Rocks, aka Chimney Rock off Hwy 166, south of Cuyama, near Rock Front Ranch. Coming from Hwy 33 Ventura, about an hour south of the 33 turn off onto 166, maybe less. His neck of the woods, my backyard. Thanks,
here is a link of the place...

Er, that's should be my photo credit (but thanks for the link) and I wondered the same thing about the origin of this bizarre anchor. I asked Kevin Steele who coauthored the classic "Climbing! Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo" with Steve Tucker and he had no idea other than maybe Chouinard BITD. I kind of doubt it as this swivel piece sure is a Rube Goldberg contraption hardly worthy of the maestro. Maybe aliens or secret special forces were dropped on top in the 50's by helicopter as an exercise to engineer their way out?

That appears to be an old Star drive in type bolt, probably from a local hardware store. It probably makes a 1/4 inch Rawl Drive look bomber.

cuyama--the tarantula hawk capital of california.

yea, bomber hardware, but the sling has faded from yellow to white--close to the good chard down in santa ynez.

Looks too rotten and pitted to be chrome-moly steel, which Yvo knew to use from the very start because John Salathe taught him. I can't imagine he would use uber-bitchin 4130 for his pitons, and then cobble hardware store bits together for a permanent anchor.

Also, the bolt itself looks like a big Zamac nail-and-sleeve affair, totally suitable for hanging a picture on a concrete wall, but not much else.

I'd say, put the blame for that piece of death-mank on someone else.

I'll loan you my Big Wall Crowbar, and you can go yank that thing out, and replace it with something from the 21st century.

If that is a swivel with a chain link, it has the look of stuff bought at a hardware store or ag supply store. Something square purchased for a washer, and some kind of drive in bolt. It appears someone made use of what was available locally to them. Just my two cents.
