Even with all the panning in and out you can see how good he was at composition. He really used the "thirds" concept very well, you can look at almost any of those photos and see that concept applied.
His chapter in 'Mountain Light' about film capturing the light through a camera lens should be the first thing anyone reads before they start trying to take landscape photo's.

22 years ago, my father gave me a copy of "Mountain Light" for my 18th birthday. I was punk kid in high school in NYC. I'd never seen anything like it. It changed my life forever.
