So Paul Humphrey's and Bean Bowers are 2 otherwise healthy dudes who both have stage 4 cancer. Then seeing Bob D'Antonio, close to a world class athlete not too old at all getting a double bypass, and a bunch of other similar things has hit my brain. Maybe it was happenstance, but I just picked up the book "The China Study".
It starts out telling you that milk products and too much animal protein (ie, beef, chicken, etc) are the prime causes of most of our health ills. Not a "maybe" this is causing it, but scientifically weighted to be the most likely case.
Sh#t I'm barely past the introduction and I'm already changing my diet. Anyone else feel or believe this?

Life is 100% fatal.
Starvation brings it on sooner.
Cube life is killing us in so many other ways, despite not really shortening our lifespan much.

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. Pollan's advice, and pretty much bang on in evolutionary terms. When we were cavemen, and before that pre-hominids, we ate a ton of fruit and veggies, with occasional blasts of very lean meat and fish. Grains, sugar, gobs of fat, refined starches, no. Our bodies are millions of years old, our diet 50.
Eating dairy is like, an alien lands on Earth, we walk up to her, and say "can we suck on your tits?"

China Study is well known in the field, and had a huge sample size. That said, longevity & diet study of the longest lived groups showed quite a bit of variance in what their diets were composed of.
For example, the people of the southern Caucuses drink a glass or two of fermented milk every day. So ruling out dairy might not be the answer. The commonality between the groups is usually fresh whole foods, little meat, low calorie diet, vigorous exercise, respect for elders and close community ties.
The book "Healty at 100" looks at the Hunza, Caucasian, Okinawana, and high Andean groups with noted longevity and health. Very good and quick read, recommended. It also makes reference and has a chapter on the China Study IIRC.

Somewhat to my surprise, I agree with El Cap -- at least on this. There is enough variance in the diet of long-lived groups to justify some skepticism of dogmatic diets, but there's also enough shared traits that they're worth studying and learning from them.
But then again, "The minute you're born you start dying, so you might as well have a good time." -- Cake.

MMCC- +1, like. What everyone is saying, it's all very interesting-and the fact that there is more than just diet which is problematic. I don't disagree with anyone. I'm just hoping for the best. I couldn't be a vegetarian, I've pondered it, but nope. I just hope Chipolte burrito bowls aren't too bad in the long run.

Nay, nay!! Life is killing you!!
Always busts me up when those terrorizing ads come on the radio (I killed my TV years ago to save my brain) claiming that this or that is the #1 killer, when the FACT is that LIFE is the #1 killer.
Tune out, turn off, and drop into sanity!!

Eliminate grains, sugar and processed foods. Eat meat, vegetables and healthy fat. Exercise a little bit.
Try this lifestyle as an experiment for 90 days. If you are not amazed at how fantastic you look and feel, go back to killing yourself with your old eating habits.

Remember that obnoxious bumper sticker about 20 years ago that said "He who dies with the most toys wins"? Some smart-ass (better than being a dumb-ass) answered that with the bumper sticker that said "He who dies with the most toys still dies!"
Same goes for "how" we die. Every self-righteous ivory tower vegan is going to get old, whither, and die. Every beer swilling bloody steak eater is going to get old, whither, and die. So, tell me, if the final TRUTH is the same, what difference does it make how one gets there, huh?
Eat the meat, swill the brew, ride the saddle, and die knowing you had fun!!
A life unexamined is not worth living? No, no, a life unlived is not worth examining!!

The air is killing us!
Seriously, I just took a breath, and felt one breath closer to dying.
Wait.
It happened again.
Damn.
