Drawing materials from their immediate surroundings, they developed gear resembling modern alpenstocks, snowshoes, crampons and climbing ropes to better navigate the terrain.

Thanks! There's been some about this in our papers, and it's quite interesting stuff. Hopefully Tricouni is somewhere around - he knows quite a lot about these things. It's pretty clear that the First Peoples did quite a lot in the mountains, for economic (resources and trade) and spiritual reasons particularly.

Then there's the story of Kwaday Dan Ts'inchi ("Long Ago Person Found"), the well-preserved body found in the mountains of northwest BC in 1999. It is a young man, who died there in about 1450 CE. Lots of fascinating stuff about what he was doing, and how it fitted into the native economies of trade between coast and inland.

That snowboarder picture really captures the First Nation spirit.

Sorry - just find it irritating. Cool article, though.

The challenge being that the first humans to move into this area may have done so along the coast, through areas that were exposed during the ice age, utilizing marine resources. All of which is now under 0 - 80 m of water. And then moved inland as the glaciers retreated. What is the earliest reliably dated evidence of humans in this part of the world found so far?

Jim, I like how you think.

Was just scheming with Mucci a bit about indeterminate outcomes and our plans for summer and fall.

I think it's a nutty idea. Who knows if you'll make it? I say go for it. But then again, I can't ski my way out of a lodge.
