My kids (5 & 7 years old) are interested in ice climbing. I'd like to take them out to TR some stuff. What kind of gear (tools, boots, crampons) is available/are people using for kids?

The usual problem is boots. I have been taking kids with ski boots. You can rent them if you don't have them. (Boots that is.) Crampons fit on well enough. Hand tools would be whatever you can lay your hands on that are light weight.
Good luck - you will have a ball.

The stuff for the feet will be the challenge and the expense. It goes without saying that helmets are a must, but a face shield would be a priority for me, also.

two rope belay?

I know some knucklehead adults who have thwaped the rope TRing. Would hate that to be your 5 or 7 year old up there hacking through the rope by mistake...

there's a kid's climbing wall at the ouray ice park. during the ice festival in early January you can rent equipment for kids. it is a safe way to introduce kids to ice.

Thanks for the ideas...

My old Charlet Moser Grade 8 crampons fit the kids ski boots pretty well on the smallest adjustment much to my surprise. I have one suitable tool http://www.chep-net.com/reviews/compact-black-ice-axe.jpg so I'll just need to find another to go with it.

hoipolloi: That's a good thought; I've seen that happen too. I don't think the kids would be able to swing hard enough to go through the rope but I'll probably dull the tools a bit to make sure.

My neighbors have been involved in the kids climbing park since it started. I'll be sure to talk with them too.

Peace,

Aaron

Took my son Jack out today on our local bridal veil. He is 10 and just used my second tools that are full size. This is the third year he has been on ice. I just make sure it is good and warm, it was in the mid 60's today in Spearfish. I also have him wear his skiing gogles and his ski boots.

Thanks Munge. He just turned 10 yesterday and it seems like just yesterday he was just he had to be hauled in a pack everywhere, now he is carrying one on an ice climb.
