Anybody have any input on how wet the captain is right now? Looking to capitalize on the January winter lull on either Mescalito, Shortest Straw, Zenyatta, or something similarly protected from possible icefall. I imagine that icefall should minimize over the next few days. How wet would Mescalito be. I know the descent would be heinous, but how bad? Is there anybody on the valley floor with their eyes on the Big Stone right now?

Just got off on saturday. East ledges has a trail left from a Zenyatta crew, fixed ropes in place are good. All the Ice fell mostly three to five days ago, and it is mostly down. Look at tomorrows weather though, as it may complicate your plan. Weeping on the east half seems to be just like May up there. Lots of rock and icefall near elcap towers, and the top of Mescalito. Nothing new came down on sunday. There is a bear wandering the base that is not hibernating, so food storage is important.

Edit to add that the base saw highs of 72 F. midday on most days.

forget about Mescalito in winter... very exposed to a lot of things. SS or ZM are good ones for this time of year.

Thanks for the info. It would have been fun to suffer up there to that song, but we have decided to go to Black Velvet Canyon instead. Hoipoiloi and I will have to make that our cold weather walling song some other time.

Black Velvet Cyn????

Now that is gonna be on the cold side. El Cap sounds warmer IMHO.

At the speed we will be moving cold won't be too much of a factor especially since we will be back in the van at night. Stoked on the well above average temperatures with this classic January lull.

sht was coming down hard all last weekend because of that big storm. Better rub your rosaries, I wouldn't go near that thing right now. Scary.
