Funny that in these days of 3D, High Def, mega color media, we still only perceive the world in black & white...

I would like to propose some new debate guidelines.
1- titles of debates (threads) should be as neutral as possible to avoid point 2.
2a- any personal attack or derogatory remark will be evidence of a failed point and the opposing poster automatically wins the debate.
2b- trolls will be completely disregarded, no matter how inflammatory the post.
3- any points will be backed up with verifiable references within the post, preferably links to such.
4- if said references have been posted in the thread, it is up to the dissenting party to find & read them and not to request they be reposted for convenience.
5- "cut and paste" posts must be accompanied by actual original thoughts and opinions that meaningfully add to the quotes.

I'm sure there are other rules we can add. I appreciate your input.

Nice try Werner. Unfortunately for you, I really don't believe the sun rises and falls on your every word.

It's just a suggestion, seeing as how much vitriol flows on this site. As I said, I am as guilty as many here. I'm just not proud of it and would like to be part of the change I hope results from the more rational among us banding together to try and restore some modicum of respect toward each other.

People certainly will continue to have their differences of opinion. Just quit with the outrageous personal attacks and remember that we all share a love of our sport (at least those here who actually climb). It's really not difficult.

What would Brutus do?

Rules mean nothing unless they can be enforced. As there seems to be a pretty open ended forum here without moderation, the only enforcement happens as we choose to police ourselves individually.

I enjoy a good debate but reading some of the threads of recently, it seems like there is no chance of debate, only frothing vitriolic mudslinging. Expressing difference of opinion is one thing but its way over the top.

In debates there are judges and moderators and clear criteria for winning and losing. Here there just seems to be a bunch of angry mo-fos and bro-fos who can't express their point and leave it for their audience to take or leave.

To get off my soap box and try to contribute to a theoretical set of rules, I would like to see people just stfu once its clear that they made their point rather than engaging in chest-beating, dick-measuring and all other sorts of angry posturing to make up for the fact that others out there can look at the same situation and come to a different conclusion without being wrong themselves and without invalidating your opinion at the same time.

Also, run-on sentences are strictly forbidden!
