Arid Zone climbers: My wife and I are headed out on three week climbing trip--Josh, Queen Creek, Cochise. We'll be looking to get the most up-to-date guides, but I'm wondering about the camping scene in Queen Creek and any possible access issues. Based on our ability, it looks like we'll be sticking to moderates in the Pond and, especially, Lower Devil's Canyon, which sounds fantastic. Can one camp out there on the road to LDC? We'd like to spend a few days there before heading down to Cochise. We have a 2wd Toyota Tundra with a pop-up camper on the back--long bed. Good clearance, but she ain't no jeep.

Any help greatly appreciated.

You can get down into lower devils... I've got a 2 wheel drive Nissan Pathfinder... and it gets me to a spot where you can camp... you just won't be able to make the last hill that takes you to up to the saddle. You can also camp at Oak Flat Campground, no issues. If you climb at Lower Devils, you should also check out Lower Devils East (across the way)-SUPER fun new area-mixed/trad... I think there's an online guide/lots of info over on Mountain Project. Have a great time-it's been awesome there!

you can buy the (decent but pricey) little guide-pages at the nearest REI. Don't count on much other climbing gear there, tho.

Fun sport climbing, apparently some of the places lower down are a bit chossy...

I have never posted to a forum before...but this one I could not resist
Totem Pole in Lower Devils is a MUST DO!!! Do it in one pitch with care down low with long runners to take care of rope drag...one piece of gear needed...either a small alien or bd nut...stay to the right up top and then enjoy the view as i am sure you will
Then Proto Pipe, Eyes of the World and pack it up for the Stronghold
End Game is the one

Tons of fun to be had there! Steelmnky and Marty Karabin, here on the Taco are good sources of info about this.

Be careful about camping at Oak Flats, don't leave anything out.

The local tweaker contingency has the news on that place.

Just sayin'.

No news about tweaker break-ins that I know of since a few years back. Should be fine to camp wherever but you will appreciate the solitude of the meadow in Lower Devils Canyon if you can make it. I'd try it, the road is graded often by the mining company. Don't miss Hackberry Creek, just next to Lower Devils.

The Pond is nice and crowded on weekends. Northern Devils Canyon (separate foldout guide) is great and never crowded and easy to get to.

Your best bet for the foldout guides is PRG in Tempe, Az.

Thanks! We're really stoked.

What is "PRG" in Tempe? I've printed out some stuff from Mountain Project, but I want to go loaded for bear.
