My girl and I want to climb at Castle Rock soon. We have an old truck camper and usually just pull off and camp on side roads, national forest land, etc. when visiting area. All the info on C. Rock says tent camping only in the park. How about a pullover behind the bushes type thing just outside the park? PM me if you don't want to blab the locatin on the net.
Thanks!

Your best best is to stay the hell away from Castle Rock SP itself. The park and surrounding highway are patrolled pretty regularly (or at least it has been in the past) and the rangers are not shy about ticketing.
And the tent camping at Castle Rock is a 1+ mile hike in, it is a backpackers campground. And it might be closed this time of year, though not sure. Budget cut-backs make everything uncertain now-a-days.
Big Basin has legit camping but it is EXPENSIVE. The beach are less expensive but not by much.
Not much help, sorry

Not a lot of choices for OB camping in the area. I would suggest checking out state CG's. If they are open most likely not crowded. With the rain we are getting it would not be ethical to be on the friable rock for a few days. Snow is a possibility tonight.

CRSP main walk in campground will be open all winter, the Waterman Gap walk in is closed for the winter.
The main campground would work pretty well. Once you've got your camp set it's a nice walk to Goat Rock. Quite a bit further to Castle Rock.
All along 9 and 35 (Skyline) the roads are posted no parking after dark and you WILL be ticketed. Sorry 'bout the lack of overnight hospitality.
karo's got a good idea, check out the Sanborn Park campground. About a 30 minute drive to CRSP and close to Saratoga (maybe too close).
Big Basin CG is open year round. Aesthetic campsites and 3/4 hour drive to CRSP or the beach.
Dirtbag out of bounds camping? You're SOL (sH** outta luck).
The whole Bay area is pretty much locked down these days. Expect a flashlight in the windows around midnight.
You can sneak a bivvy on some of the beaches if you can find a place to stash your car and walk. You can camp near the beach at Sunset, Manresa and New Brighton state beaches. New Brighton as "RV" sites, not sure about the others.
Portola Redwoods and Butano CGs are closed for the winter. Sam Mac Donald (San Mateo County) park CG might be open through the winter, about 3/4 hour to CRSP.
Good luck.

great camping at big basin and henry cowell state parks not a huge drive away. then on your rest days you can surf the lane, catch a ride on the giant dipper, dine on sustainable sprouts, and sleep on a carpet of redwood needles before jugging back up to your high-point on University of Santa Clara Practice Climb #2.

find a parking lot down in the valley (below Castle, saratoga area maybe? REI?) and just park once the night if over.
If you can do everything without drawing too much attention to yourself, things should go smoothly. Leave all the lights off, cover the windows. Just sleep as much as possible.
When the morning comes, jump in the cab, and go on your merry way.
At least this worked for me for about a month back in the day.
