in today's NYTimes... http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/17/arts/17trevanian.html
Rodney Whitaker who wrote under the pseudonym Trevanian, was the author of The Eiger Sanction and a number of other novels...
...he didn't much like the movie, but who has read the book?

i just watched that movie two nights ago, i love it. thought you draw the line at hauling ice.
kinda OT- last night was the tahoe adventure film festival, Shane McConkey edition, awesome ski basing off the eiger and just about everything else, including the leap. guest speaker was rick sylvester, came down to talk at the mike in a straight jacket! what a stud. the guy was waaaay ahead of his time.

I think I read most of his stuff and while the "Eiger Sanction" is what he is most known for, his book "Shibumi" was the better read.

I read the eiger sanction and thought it was great, in a trapped in the airport kind of way. Didn't like The Loo sanction as much and never read shibumi.

Trevanian was a brilliant writer! I didn't know his real name until now.
The Eiger Sanction was of course brilliant, and his other works - The Loo Sanction and The Main - are worth reading. Might have been one other, can't recall at the moment.
I always loved the concept of Shibumi. I remember asking my Japanese mates who gave me the Jolly Roger beta about the word, but they were not familiar with it. It may be Ancient Japanese.

Funny this comes up now...I just tonight saw a reprint (first ever?) of The Eiger Sanction book at the Smut Hut in Tucson. Love the book (Yurassis Dragon, etc.), love the movie. Classics.

I saw the movie first and was impressed by the story line and the breathtaking back drops. I loved the book as well.

Trevanian was a modern day Hugo - master of the twist ending. Eiger Sanction remains the best climbing film of all time. Shibumi would make a great film. I'm mean come on the guy slit throats with credit cards and was a fifth level master of Tantric sex - no physical contact needed to achieve multi orgasms for him and his babe!
