Durham, NC -- This week marks the end of an era for one of the earliest pieces of Internet history, which got its start at Duke more than 30 years ago.

On May 20, Duke will shut down its Usenet server, which provides access to a worldwide electronic discussion network of newsgroups started in 1979 by two Duke graduate students, Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis.

Working with a graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill, they came up with a simple program to exchange messages and files between computers at Duke and UNC using telephone modems.

...Like an increasing number of Internet service providers who have shut down their newsgroup servers, Duke decided to retire its aging Usenet server based on low usage and rising costs.

Microsoft is killing off its newsgroups and encouraging users to move to forums instead.

The software giant has over 2,000 public groups covering its various products, as well as 2,200 private groups for the likes of Microsoft resellers. But from June 2010 these will be moved to revamped forums on TechNet, MSDN and Microsoft Answers.

My ISP killed off their news server a couple of years ago. rec.climbing is dead, but there are still some groups active. Too bad.

How many of us started our internet climbing community experience on rec.climbing?

My participation on rec.climbing (a usenet group) led directly to a complete change in my life -- moved to a different country, met my current climbing partners, met my love of the last ten years... all because I stumbled upon that newsgroup one day.

Maybe usenet is no longer relevant, but I sure have fond memories, and I'll be raising a toast tonight.

It's the kill file that is missed most.

That and a reader that knows what articles are new.

How sad is it we now are using forums that have less functionality than a 20 year old NNTP client?

But then that's predictable I suppose given there's no way (other than spam) to "monetize" a newsgroup.
