Howdy folks,

Family and I are headed to Lava Beds National Monument. My sons are each bringing a friend and I'd like to take them on their first climb. Boys are 7-9. The only climbing I'm aware of in that area is Castle Crags. Haven't climbed there and understand it's a long hike to get there. I'm looking for somthing no more than a half mile from the road.

Anyone aware of any spot to set up a toprope? Basically, the area I'm looking at is from Redding to Weed on I-5 to Klamath Fall on HWY 97. The closer to Lava Beds, the better, but we'll travel. We'll also be around Shasta, Timber Mountain, and Glass Mountain. I'm looking for easy climbing (5.0-5.4) that is anywhere from 20-50 feet.

I want to make sure that they have a positive first experience so I can make them into life-long climbers.

Thanks for any info,

Brent

Keep an eye out for these neat sculptures along interstate 5, near Weed.
There's nowhere obvious to just stop and look at them - they're simply in the field by the highway. A local artist/welder makes them as 'found' art, out of miscellaneous stuff. I think he has an exhibit in Weed.

Plenty of good lava top-roping in Lava Beds State Park:

And remember to go with the flow.....

Don't miss the petroglyphs at Petroglyph Point...

Very cool place... Spent an afternoon in lava tubes with my sister-in-law and nephew a few years back. Don't know much 'bout climbing there, but I keep eyeing stuff.

There is a 5.1, 5.4,5.6, a couple of 5.7s and a 5.8 in close proximity to one another on Eagle Cliff in Lassen NP. I haven't done those, but have climbed up there plenty. Highly scenic area, Lassen is really nice.

Easy walk to the cliff, it's about 75' high or so.

Reilly,

No climbing in the park. Already called and was told we can't set up gear on any of the formations in the park.

Brent,
What they don't know won't hurt them. Advice that works for most things.
It's a big place and I didn't see too many security cameras.

ps
How come they let the bugs climb all over my car?

...and today in the news, father of three is arrested in front of his children after pulling off three historic blocks of rock with Native American writings on them while setting up a toprope.

Love the "ask for forgiveness instead of asking for permission" but with all the folks around, we'll stick to the legal rock.

However, in August, who wants to go base jump from Half Dome:-)

Looks like Lassen is still snowed in, so I'll just throw the rope in the car and see what we can get. Thanks for the input!
