Some powerful, yet horribly sad images of the catastrophic events unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico:

We've had an exxon valdez or two since.

Why don't they just go grab that 3 month supply thats laying on the ground in Montana?

The enemy is me. And you. There's no stopping it.

Get your kicks in.

I wore this shirt yesterday as I put 117 dollars into my chevy 350 just to get myself and my tools to work in order to buy some plastic toys to rule the mountains with.

The ironic hypocrisy is not lost on me.

I disagree with " the enemy is me and you statement"; albeit there are some changes I could make to slow down on my personal consumption of fossil fuels.

I don't think there is a person among us who wouldn't gladly pay a few extra cents per gallon to a fund that prevents or addresses this sort of eventuality.

The enemy is greed on part of the oil industry. They skirt safety issues mainly because of the expense (the loss of profit), gambling instead on the chance a catastrophe won't happen in the name of profits, bonuses and ego.

There are people within these corporations that preach this same message but they go unheeded and the messenger becomes complacent because they need the job.

As much technology, research and development that has evolved in locating, drilling and refining oil there should be at least as much spent on crisis prevention and management.

I don't think there is a person among us who wouldn't gladly pay a few extra cents per gallon to a fund that prevents or addresses this sort of eventuality.

The enemy IS ourselves. We still buy gas, plastic and other petrol products. We drive wherever we want whenever we want.

Sure we would all love an 'easy' alternative. We can say its not our fault because the oil companies are keeping us from having an alternative.

BULLSHYTE

Life without oil is not going to be easy. We may not be able to go wherever we want whenever we want.

What can you do right now? Stop driving one person per car. Stop driving to the store one block away. Stop buying plastic crap!

CONVINCE YOUR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME.

Plastic isn't so much the issue with roughly 1% of our total oil consumption going to plastics (from what I've been told). It's really transportation and fertilizer that are the big culprits. Plastics often do things cheaper and quite possibly with less impact than a wood or metal alternative. I agree with you on the core principle though...the enemy is definitely ourselves. I've been looking hard at ways to trim our gas consumption in no small part motivated by this horrendous accident.

I posted this on its own thread, but it quickly sank to the nether world. I thought it was well worth a listen. Funny, informative, and sad, all at once. Starts a little slow but give it a shot....

(latest figures I saw, 2.6% of petroleum for plastics)

I agree with the Alpine. The enemy is us! Clinton pitched a graduated tax on gas that would have culminated to .50 a gallon and most of you and people like you sqeealed like stuck pigs about it. It was strickly designed to slow Americas crazy out of control usage and would have dropped off in a graduated manner if or when gas prices rose. We, all of us, and that means YOU, are all to blame. Don't run around pointing fingers at everyone else.

That and AND the lack of watchdogging the industry. It's both. In the best of worlds you'd still have accidents and spills as there is no way to eliminate them all, but it is imperative to avoid all of the ones that are totally needless.
