On November 19, 2002, Nick Fowler and I climbed the Zodiac in 5 hours and 57 minutes.
I was actually going to climb the route with my wife Catra but she was having trouble cleaning the first pitch. Nick showed up at the base planning to go for the solo record. I had never met Nick before but knew him through reputation. Before we knew it we were planning to climb the route together. We left the ground at 3:53pm. I led the entire route, mostly in the dark, while Nick cleaned and tagged gear. A few things besides the dark slowed us down.... someone bootied some fixed pins near the top (we did the route hammerless) and I could have gone faster if I were wearing my free shoes.
The previous time on the Zodiac was 7:04 made by Miles Smart and Chris McNamara.
Cheers, Ammon

holy sh#t, imagine what you could have done had you been wearing your free shoes!!!! and if your girlfriend, that bitch, wasn't slowing you down, you'd have been the MAN!! with sunshine, great gear, and wired routes, why bother with something more? indeed, yosemite is rad. take it to another level, then you'll truly be the man. you're rehearsing. now, it's like taking your 57th run on Pac Man and claiming your record score. training climbs.

Brent,
Wow.... You're maturity level is outstanding. I'm not about one upping anyone. I wasn't talking schmack, just reporting something I think is note worthy. Dean is a friend of mine..... but if it makes you happy.... I have taken his record on the Tangerine Trip.

ammon...last night's post was apres-bar closing and for that reason overtly filled with a little more venom than I spew sober (usually).
It is funny though...while the last day or so I have been enjoying issue 1 of the alpinist and the opinions of its creators, to find your post almost seems the antithesis of this ideal.
Firstly dude...come on now with the self-aggrandizement trip...a little self deprication goes a LOT longer way. If your "newsworthy" achievement is that rad, wouldn't we have heard of it through another source? Maybe all the little bigwall geeks could surf on over to Han's site and get the dirt. Personally I find your time on Pressure cooker and PSD much more interesting. Posting your own records, in my worthless opinion, is not in good style.
Next point... and this is what I was trying to get across with the go one up Dean...go somewhere other than the Valley. While yes athleticism is nice when combined with perfect weather and a route you have climbed umpteen times, I find something like Steve S's tower traverse down South much closer to the alpine ideal than you whining about fixed pins missing.
Sorry to be the guy who doesn't just blow smoke up your a*# about how rad you are, which maybe you are...but I can hear the Slovenians laughing from here.
I would love to engage in a (now sober) debate on any of these points and talk like gentlemen, or maybe one day friends. Keep sending regardless, and let schmack talk reign forever.

brent, you're a fool.
You seem to favor abusing people who record ACTUAL accomplishments in favor of the usual un-witty repartee crap on this site. Nice work. And like you've never been excited about an accomplisment and told your friends and anyone who would listen in the mountain room? What's the difference?
This is a Yosemite site, not a Patagonia site, so Yosemite accomplishments seem appropriate. It's not like this site is the NY Times.
I think it's interesting and am happy to see it. Thanks Ammon.

Brent,
One question, have you climbed the Zodiac?
If so, fine. If not...I suggest you go do it, and after your second or third night, imagine what it would be like to climb it in five hours...
Ammon has just as much of a right to chestbeat as anyone else, but unlike many, his accomplishment IS something worth bragging about. In my opinion...

Congratulations..awesome achievement..but that aside, I agree with Brent. This thread should have been titled, "Lookie here! Look at me! Look what I did!" Or maybe, "Booyaaahh!! How you like me now."

I agree.
It's not as though it isn't a very impressive personal accomplishment. Congrats! I'm glad to be able to read of such events.
However, the style in which it was announced here does smack of "Look at me!" It's not a big deal...just rubs some of us the wrong way.
