Time and again we hear this forum referred to affectionately as a “campfire,” a place where climbers gather and chat, spray, argue, whatever.
My question is this: Would you hang out at a campfire where most of the folks wore masks, would not introduce or identify themselves, and felt free to insult and slander anyone they might have a difference of opinion with?
Supertopo members seem to be divided into three groups: those who post under their real names or a recognizable version of their name, those who use an avatar but whose identity is no secret to the insiders, and those who hide behind the anonymity of an avatar.
Those members in the first two groups are by far the nicer people here. Let’s encourage more people to take off the mask. Personally, I won’t say anything to another person on the forum that I wouldn’t say face to face looking them straight in the eye.

I prefer the mask. Not because I'm afraid to say anything to your face in person that' I'd say here, but because I'd rather not have some data aggregation service (like Google search) or anyone else with an axe to grind data mine the "real" me.

Roger that, homeboy.
But I think we know which of us will identify themselves.
Unfortunately, the ones we already know.

I don't think one needs to post their identifiable name(which definitely WILL get links coming up on a search), but we can still ID ourselves here. A photo of us at a get-together, being part of the Facelift or SushiFests or other events(though not everyone can or wants to go to these), pictures of us on routes. Mentioning our area we live in, talking about our local crags. Things like that.
I have met people in real life who tell me "Oh - when you wrote (whatever) on Suertopo, that was (whatever)." Then I say "Oh! Who are you on Supertop?" And they flat out won't say...
Very rarely has someone said "Oh, I don't post - just read." They almost always are active participants, they say.
That makes me feel very weird. They can recall some little nothing I posted(and usually they recall more than a few little nothings, enough to show they frequent the site). But they can't let me know who THEY are..... That's icky.

Edit: what dingus said. We know who some of the raunchiest people on this forum are. They are still raunchy. We just know you they are. Replace raunchy with mean spirited and you get the same results.

Kris has a great idea, but Binks also makes a good point.
Unfortunately this campfire is part of the big-bad internet.
Just putting your name on a website can create opportunities for those with bad intentions. People do all sorts of creative things with this data, and none of it will ever be in your best interest. Perhaps I'm paranoid, but what is done on the internet cannot be undone. I like to be careful, especially because I have a unique name.
So I offer a compromise: My name is Dave K.
If you really want to know my last name, email me. I just ask that you don't use it on the general public internet.

If you look around on here, you'll find my name, my birthdate, pictures of my face, my truck (w/ license #) and even aerial photos of my house.
What I'm not going to do is roll it all into one post. I don't want to facilitate those whose motives are less than honest.

You guys who think throwing your real name around on the internet is a good idea are making a mistake in my opinion. I guess it's fine if the only thing you post about is utterly factual, but god forbid you ever want to argue a point of view or post a "fun" picture.
At my work, people who are being hired get Googled. They look at everything they find. People have not been hired for silly reasons like a party picture that rubbed a manager wrong. Don't post stuff under your real name unless you have nothing to lose. Even though determined people could find out who you really are behind an alias anyway, at least make them work for it.

I post under the "Edge" name, but a quick look on this or other sites will easily produce my name of Loran Smith.
Fortunately I am self employed, so I have no worries about employers discovering that I am a pompous, washed-up, has been. Everything I post is out there for all to see, if they care to dig that far. It is who I am.
Besides, everyone who Googles "Edge" thinks I am a shaving gel.

Mostly Binks I figure I will never be going after a job where anyone would care to try to figure out who I am online. And if they don't like what I post, then I figure I wouldn't like working for them and that is more important to me the the amount of money I make. I will take a lower paying job if it means working with someone I like.
I still try to be circumspect.

I fully understand peoples desire and need for privacy and security on the web. My case is unique 'cause after a long career in the music biz my name comes up on a bazillion searches on tons of CD's recorded by gangsters and drug addicts. I pretty much fall into the "nothing to lose" category as far as having my name out there goes. Of course you won't see me posting any specific personal info beyond that.
That's what is cool about the second category which includes folks like DMT, Happie, etc.
And yeah it's probably better to view each thread as it's own fire...

not a vintage NW chosshead you wouldn't know me as S Reilly Moss.
If I take you for a drive you'd understand the connection between my
