Anybody watching this?

I like the scenery, but as far as climbing content it pretty much sucks. Another drama show about some half gimp climber whinning their way up the mountain and having to be carried down...

Just watched it with my dad. He is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. I've never seen him curse so much at a tv show before. Our banter about how stupid those people are and how ego driven the entire thing is was better than the actual show.

It's all pathetic.

As far as I am concerned, the sooner these types of idiots die, the better.

Evolution is simple. You're either fast or your food.

the main IMG guy said "you either got it or you don't" You'd think they would be able to weed out some of those cheesers with preexisting heath problems before they cause a scene on the mountain.

"jeeze you guys are harsh. must be a bunch of super mountaineers here."

You sadly mistaken my comments for being that I'm some super mountaineer.

It's really simple. I'm not dumb enough to believe that I have any business up there. Unlike the idiots that flock there.

Robert, you're just sour. These are some of the best climbers in the WORLD admit it. This is REAL climbing.

Lambone: I enjoyed Breashers "The storm over Everest" (or something like that). It's an instant view. Lots of interviews, reenactment of the storm, etc.

It was pretty lame. The "first climber ever to summit with the rope laying sherpas"? BFD.
Base camp looks like an utter circus. At least 100 tents.

OMG. I think that is the most I've ever laughed at an episode of, well,

thanks for posting citune!! hope people don't throw as much haterade on the climbing inaccuracies when Kramer's involved because it really doesn't matter...

still giggling. hee hee.

edit: citune's clip deserves a thread of its own.

edit again: how is it that episode is almost 20 yrs old?
That cordless phone looks as bigger than a modern sat phone.

Most of those people have no business being on that mountain.
If you can't climb it like Messner, you have no right being there....

Sour, no. Pragmatic, yes.

Everyone has a "right" to be there, the real issue is whether they should be there.

My guess, it's only a matter of time before there is another "tragedy" on Everest that's gonna make the 96 cluster f*#k look mild by comparison.

In a world of microwaveable pizza and instant coffee is it any wonder that we have instant mountaineers?

After all, if you can climb (on) Everest you must be the best there is, right?

Why bother to pay your dues when you can BUY the summit (and the lives of sherpas sometimes thrown in as well)?

It really distills the discussion of motivation. Do you do it for personal fulfillment or to impress others? Once, years ago, I was at a party in NYC when I was introduced to some people by a friend as a desert rock climber.
A woman said to me that her son was a climber too, and that he had begun the previous month at a gym.

I said something to the effect that that was nice.

WTF bother?

The ex-athlete on the show pretty much summed it up for me. He goes to the mountain with an already debilitating knee injury knowing full well he would have to rely on others for support, which would also put them at great risk. He even needs assistance from people to periodically pop back into place. Now just imagine this happening in the death zone during a blizzard.

Anyways, after a while he ends up falling on his water bottle and potentially breaks some of his ribs. He is in so much pain now from the ribs and his already jive knee he needs several people to help him down to base camp to get checked out. Regardless of all his injuries he still insists on going back up and making the summit. YOu can tell by his face, and how he reacts on the phone when his partner makes the summit, that he is mad beyond anything at the expedition leader.

This show seems to show the very worst in climbing. It's ego wrapped around pride with a side of narcissism cooked in greed.

Watched it with my kids last night as we vegetated after skiing all day.

What bothers me most about the ex-athelete John Golden is he is a high paid executive of the insurance industry who got an experimental procedure.

Have personally seen this phenomenon many times where the very guy who has a well established reputation of delaying or denying approval of well accepted appropriate procedures, or the head honchos of a company nortorius for denial of healthcare get something that their company always delays or denies.
