Big Bear Local Jordan Romero is attempting to be the youngest person to climb the seven summits.
With 5 (6) down and two to go, he's building up steam. A feature in Backpacker, Outside did a photo shoot this week, Xdance next month, and he's off to Tibet in the spring.
Here's a short film I did about his quest.

Your thoughts on this kind of quest?

Repost: Hopefully his brain continues to develop while he subjects it to hypoxic air. Otherwise who gives a flying fuuck. Maybe it is time to send a letter to his sponsors that people are getting tired of this "first" crap.

Of course I have always said that I will help support the first unsupported nude snow board traverse to the south pole - but only if they sing god save the queen along the way.

A mother dies on K2 and its called irresponsible. What would they call it if the victim is a 13 year old kid? I mean, its all good until someone gets their eye poked out.

The kids parents are obviously taking him on some great trips. Wish I was that lucky when I was his age. More power to this family is all I can say. he still has many years left before tackling Everest and still being the youngest 7 summitter. Whats with all the negative comments on a young climbers aspirations from the supertopo crowd ?

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter if he dies or not. People will always risk their own and other lives for celebrity, that's just the way it is.
Consider:

Jessica Whitney Dubroff (May 5, 1988 – April 11, 1996) was a 7-year-old pilot trainee who was attempting to become the youngest person to fly an airplane across the United States when, 24 hours into her attempt, her general aviation aircraft crashed after takeoff from Cheyenne Regional Airport in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

More power to him, very good stuff. I wish them well. He is an inspiration to teenagers everywhere. Too many kids these days are plugged into video games, I-Phone's or bagging drugs from their high school buddies.

The best high in the world is to be in shape, climb a mountain, surf a wave, bike, run, etc. Bring it on. May he inspire others to seek adventure.

This says way more about his parents, and what they consider important, than it does about him.

Pretty cool. What about Adam Ondra? One of the top climbers in the world and he can't buy Spray Paint.

Yawn.

I hope this kid has fun climbing, but seriously, most of the climbs on the 7 summits list are money climbs for guided climbers. That's my opinion at least.

Did you ever try to get a teenager to do something they did not want to do? It's just about impossible, especially at this magnatude. I think he is truly motivated, but who knows. There is some real crazy stuff going on in the Junior Olympic Ski Racing community my friends are involved with.

Tami: Thank you for "having the guts" to speak out on this "prodigy."

I have had some great friends who "mentored" climbers in their early teens.

However, that was climbing on local cliffs.

My own thoughts on any teen going off to climb the "7 summits" match yours.

Actually, my thoughts are more negative.

Tami, I never meant to compare apples and oranges. Point is, you had to google to find out who he is. Something about being from the B.F.E. of Europe and being a kid makes him not so well known on the radar. He also can boulder pretty hard... flashed a Dave Graham V14. You can bag on sport climbers all you want (and I'll join ya!) but this kid is lehgit. If you ever get around to watching Progression he is on the extra features climbing all Chris Sharma's routes.

I just hope he is not another Jon Benet Ramsey kind of over-promoted child. Kids his age can really go mono-maniac and get behind simplistic projects like "seven summits". Nothing wrong with it but usually it means bypassing the rest of challenging living, childhood and the dreadful teenage years with all their insolvable mysteries.... we shall eventually see, obviously. How cool if you could just hopscotch all those much more difficult problems of youth, by doing seven climbs.

I guess if I was 8 years old or 15 years old, I would be jazzed out of my skin about this kid's stuff. But I also know there is probably a back story. Kind of a new sort of Spice girl or something. I wish him the best. I hope it all sticks.

Good on you GDavis above and below here.

Tami,

Well I won't argue with you as a parent, whom was also the first woman to climb Astroman !! :)

Personally, I can recall worse childhood experiences than the miserable hell of juvenile alpinism this poor kid must be going thru ...
