In 1988, Venables became the first Briton to ascend the summit of Mount Everest without bottled oxygen. His ascent, as far as the South Col, was by a new route up the Kangshung Face from Tibet, with just three other climbers, Americans Robert Anderson and Ed Webster, and Canadian Paul Teare...
Stephen Venables was the first Briton to climb Mt. Everest without oxygen - just one of many pioneering climbs throughout the Himalaya and other mountain ranges around the world. His first book Painted Mountains won the Boardman Tasker Award; reviewing A Slender Thread, the Observer praised his "novelist's sense of dramatic punch."
As well as ten books, he has written for all the major national newspapers and appeared in numerous television programs, including the recent BBC Mountain Men series, for which he climbed the Matterhorn in Victorian tweeds and nailed boots, and the BBC's Race for Everest.
One of Venables' more recent overseas projects was retracing Ernest Shackleton's steps across South Georgia for the IMAX movie Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure; he also wrote the script for the IMAX film The Alps - Giants of Nature, due for release in 2007. A master storyteller and skilful photographer, his illustrated lectures have inspired public and corporate audiences all around the world.

Would love to see him! Venables was the only one of the four to summit, I believe, thus saving the expedition from "failure". Their four-man ascent of the Kangshung [East] Face was one of the greatest feats in Himalayan mountaineering, and cost Ed Webster his fingertips when he made the stupid mistake of only a few minutes' barehanded photography in bitter cold.

Thanks for the "heads up". Look forward to catching his slide show. Will mention it to climbing friends who don't visit this site. (yeah, there still are a few climbers who haven't discovered Super Addictive err.... I mean Super Topo yet)

As of yesterday afternoon they apparently they have only 115 tickets left out of the 215.

I reluctantly was dragged down to see Stephen Talk at TMCC by Family.....His presentation was great, entertaining, inspiring and afterwards I was damn glad I was fortunate enough to have seen the show. Thank You Mr. Venables and the group at TMCC for bringing this kind of event to our town.
Glad he got to enjoy some Yosemite granite earlier this month with Pete and his son.
