Someone wondered if I had any book deals going.
I guess it's time to put one out there, at
the Holiday season. Need a nice Christmas present perhaps?
I have a few copies of four of my books:
Climbing Everest,
a meditation on mountaineering and the spirit of adventure
normally about $10 or $15 at stores
Wizards of Rock,
a history of free climbing in America
still going for about $20. at stores
Everything That Matters,
remembering rock climbing
I think still going at about $15 at many stores.
How To Be A Master Climber in 6 Easy Lessons
An out of print "classic"
worth about $40 when you can find it
All four for $25., which includes shipping. I will also
throw in a music CD of some of my recent recordings.
Simply send a check to Pat Ament / 1135 Aquarius Ave., / Fruita, Colorado, 81521, and the package will be in the mail to you the same day... first class.
I'll run this deal through the first week of January or until books last. Of course I will sign all the books, making their worth skyrocket (hehe)
I have a handful of copies of Stories of A Young Climber (the autobiographical piece I did years ago) which I could substitute, and two or three copies of the third version of Master of Rock, but you'll have to add five dollars if you want to substitude the Master of Rock book, as it still is a good seller and getting harder and harder to find...
Send me an email if you want to make some other offer...
All the best to everyone,
Pat Ament

Hi Pat,
Nice offer, though I only need one of the books. I've been searching for my copy of Wizards of Rock -- must have loaned it out. I rave about some of the passages whenever it comes up. You especially outdid yourself in describing Pratt's two great offwidth breakthroughs. And now that you're redoing the book, I want to go through and offer suggestions. Anyway, I'll fire you a check and look forward to reading it again.
Thanks!
Doug

Thank you, Doug, you are a good and great man. I would also
like to include more about you in the history and your influence
on the transition from pitons to nuts. Of course there seems
to be some general confusion on that subject. Your article certainly helped move things in the right direction, but often I hear people say that was the beginning of the transition, when in fact Robbins was pushing the idea in a big way by fall of 1966, quite a few years earlier...

Thanks a lot for those compliments. I was fortunate
to know Pratt, and just before he passed away we spoke
for a long time on the phone. He really opened up and
told me all the things I had wanted to know and answered
questions about those climbs about which his modesty had not
allowed him to overly speak...

Thanks to everyone. Let me know, as Doug did,
if you have any other combination of books you
need, or one particular book. I'll make a good
deal, in connection with this offer.

I realized I also have my little book of cartoons
mentioned in the most recent Climbing Magazine,
and I have a few of the old autobiographical "Stories
of a Young Climber."

Bump.
I got hooked on Pat's writing with "Master of Rock" - younger, climber hero stuff, and all that.
Got this set last year, and it is excellent reading - and as always with Pat, very dynamic and prosaic.
Thanks for your literary contributions, Sir Ament - Much respect.

That gave me a chuckle:
"What a great deal. I won't be ordering anything."
On the other hand I've heard the opposite
at other times in life,
"This is a lousy deal,
I'll take it"... or something akin to that...

Hey! That's not what I said. (Did some one else say it?)
"What a great deal. I won't be ordering anything."
Oh my it seems the out of context editor virus has struck! Quick, de bug, de bug!
THIS, as you can see in the post right ^ there, is what I said,
(no, not ordering anything, I wish!) and this is lame enough, but yours sounds very sarcastic, and mine was not meant that way.
Really, I'm just waiting until after I have some money to spend on myself.
Oli, did you not have a web site in the recent past where one could purchase your books? Or am I just imagining things? I have hunted high and low, and all I found was one of those lame fake sites with your name on it! (www dot patament dot com)

Sorry for finding humor there, no insult or offense
intended.
Yes I had a website, but it was hacked, and the fellow
running it had a lot of trouble trying to restore it.
In the meantime he ran into some
difficulties of his own and, without
telling me, didn't pay the re-up
fee, and so it went defunct. I just didn't bother
to restore it.
Maybe one day I'll start another one...

I'm checking the gift list (I think I have them all in my own personal library) I will get back to you.
My copy of Swaramandal (sp?) has come apart. Are there any more copies of that one, around?
Russ Walling will help you with the site, I bet.

I only have one copy of Swaramandal, for my
own collection. It gets more and more
difficult to find... That the binding came apart
is no surprise. That was the fist book
done by Vitaar, and they were experimenting
with a new glue. Almost everyone's book
came apart. Fortunately the writing and
spirit held together, and I have spoken with
innumerable people who have either had their
copy professional re-bound or did it themselves.
Some simply drilled 2 or 3 holes along the spine and
tied a little twine through each hole. I've
actually seen some very creative homespun
methods for re-binding Swaramandal. One simply
was to take it apart and re-glue it, presto,
like new. But sometimes some of the original glue is
good and won't come loose, so that method doesn't
always work. Another person took a drill press
and a very thin bit and drilled maybe a dozen or more
holes, threading them with some sort of cord...
Usually when my writing falls apart, of course the binding
will be perfect, and the books will stand there
for everyone to see forever, when I wish they would go away.
But Swaramandal was the other way around, sort of... It was
a pretty decent early effort but became unglued...
