Not a climbing day, but a lot of you know Dana Plateau on your way to 3rd Pillar of Dana. Debbie likes to go up there looking for plants. I can assure you that the wikipedia page greatly understates what is going on up there, at least in terms of botany.

We stopped by to see if anyone was on the route, of course... and found some packs. Here's a shot from the west from the descent buttress.
I'll write up the botany bits and post a link later.... there was a climbing party on the route just finishing up. Didn't get the leader, but did get the second.

Hey Ed, Awesome, one of our favorite places in the Sierra, unique with its botany having not been covered by ice. Who would have ever guessed the "best 5.9 in the universe" would have followed? Those who love the mountains will continue to climb for as long as we can..........Berg Heil! Any urge for something other than an OW drop me a PM (or if you a skier, the season approaches).

Dana Plateau is a marvelous hike on its own. Stupendous views. Few other people. Came across a burrowing owl up there a few years ago. Went up last year on my birthday with climbing buddy and my wife for a very fun morning's walk. Wandered all around, peered over the cliffs and scoped the 3d pillar "approach" descent. Lunched at the southwest corner of the plateau watching a party we'd met at the car finish the Dana couloir.
Please tread lightly up there. Hop the boulders and scree as much as you can. Avoid treading on the flora.

You don't want to stir the wrath of our own Bobbo Locke and Bardini, forever Guardians of the Plateau and Couloir.
Then again, they are probably knocking down a couple of brewskis and would welcome an occasional visitor.

another reason to venture up on Dana Plateau...
flower hike
both for the botany and the geology, it is part of the Earth's surface before the uplift (25 million years ago) and untouched by the glaciers...

Here's a shot of the whole Dana Plateau taken from Lee Vining Canyon this October when the aspens turn:
You can definitely see how Jack Kerouac and his Dharma bum pals used to hang on the East Side and live out the 'song of the open road' they inherited from Walt Whitman.

Like Ed Hartoni says, Dana Plateau is a great place to visit, even if you don't climb the 3rd Pillar route. It's also got the best Verizon internet connection in the Meadows. Point-to-point line of sight to the transponder in Lee Vining.
