I'd never really checked out the forum on this site until this morning, and I was a little confused because I thought it was about climbing. Anyways if you guys want to talk politics why don't you at least consider stuff that's kind of related to climbing. You could talk about all of the great things that the Bush administration is doing for our public lands and how they are working to address environmental issues like water and air quality.

Drew,

There's a few unrepented socialists, who attack anyone speaking the truth.

Ignore them, for they are but a post of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Chris Mac,

Why don't you SUBDIVIDE the McTopo forum into several sub-forums? Climbing stuff could go into one place, and non-climbing stuff could go elsewhere.

There are probably all sorts of good climbing posts buried under the choss. How 'bout a Big Wall and Aid Climbing Forum, a Trad Climbing Forum, an Other Climbing Forum, and finally The Choss Heap?

You could put all the political stuff into The Choss Heap, all the flames, all the bullsh*t, anything that is NOT climbing-related. That way when people wanted to look up stuff about Big Walls and Aid Climbing, they could go to one place. If they wanted to rant [I love a good rant!] they could go to The Choss Heap. And so on.

If someone could set it up on the website, I could volunteer my time to move posts to the appropriate forum. It would be a start. There are plenty of talented and experienced climbers here who would probably be willing to answer climbing-related questions, if we could just FIND the damn things, fer cryin' out loud!

Is anybody else interested in doing this? Does this sound like a good idea?

I am getting bored at this place. It's all the same. *yawn* Everything is buried under choss. I wouldn't know how to find any technical information around here even if I wanted to. I don't think it would take much to bring some climbing-related discussion back to the forefront, if you just put it in a designated spot.

I believe in a vell-organicized rack, a vell-organicized bivi, and a vell-organicized vebsite.

If you vant to get it started, I could help organicize it.

Cheers,

Pete

Drew,
This forum sucks. It's a bunch of slander and there are few "climbers" on the entire thing. The majority of people on this site are ginzals who do more talking than climbing. Find a better way to spend your time. Maybe do something nice for the ballerina. See you in Josh.

James, you are right. The forum sucks now.

But there actually ARE a few climbers - REAL climbers - who really do know stuff about climbing, and who would be willing to share it.

All we need is a PLACE to do it, as suggested above.

Bryan? Ammon? Klaus? Thoughts?

I'm sure you would love to censor (I mean move) posts around Pete.
Why don't you just start your own website?
You could have links to porn, how to kill bears, and how to bring a bunch of sh#t you don't need up El Cap.

james, i don't even understand what happened. I just figured maybe somebody out there would have something intelligent to say about political issues that actually affect us and the way that we are allowed to climb, but i guess it's really just a place that people like to respond in any way as fast as possible to somebody's post so that they can become anonymously famous on a website while slandering others for doing the exact same thing that they are doing. i guess nobody cared that maybe i was joking about Bush's environmental policy.

Unfortunately, no matter how clean your toilet is, eventually, someone is going to come, sit their stinky a$$ down and take a huge sh|t. In the end (pardon the pun), you'll realize, it's just a toilet and this can't be avoided...

"How 'bout a Big Wall and Aid Climbing Forum, a Trad Climbing Forum, an Other Climbing Forum, and finally The Choss Heap? "

Yeah, then it would be as easy to find interesting threads as it is on rc.com!

And then you could get some moderators who could sort the threads.

And maybe some more advertising to pay for the extra work you'd have to do.

And we could get past this focus on yosemite and big wall climbing. See if we can't attract a bunch of folks who've never climbed a route that wasn't all bolted. Yeah yeah!

Dookie!

You know what, Pete, I read through earlier and smarted off and left, but then got to thinking about what you said. And I don't like it.

The notion that real climbers have elite status derived from some aura of publicity around their names or resumes is garbage. Climbing is climbing because we all just homies. Any yahoo that shows up at the crag can be a noob or a super badass you've never heard of. The beta gleaned from BLaw or Klaus or somebody in the mags ain't necessarily better than the beta from Joe Smell out back of C4. And in fact all these are less good, relatively speaking, than the beta I learned for myself up on the wall getting my ass kicked. Beta with a name attached don't mean dick to me.

I'm all for studs sounding off, but as you must note, the REAL real climbers are reticent lads who rarely say a word. You're from the Harding school, which means you go up to drop tin cans to the press and have your pic taken on top. Which is fine. There just happen to be lots of us from the Robbins school, and when we go up ain't nobody gonna know we were up there.

You say you need a place to sound off? Got one. Gor for it. Sounds like you're looking for a hallowed hall or sumthin, though. A place fitting for your stature.

So, spritzy spritz.

Maybe It's just me and some folks like me, but the choss in the forum is just a reflection of reality these days.

We had a rainy period and lots of folks stressing about the elections, then they happened, and not everybody, (particularly in the areas that have Supertopo areas) were happy abou that either.

People sometimes take their road rage out in the forum. It's kinda human nature.

It'll change in time as life returns to normal and other issue crop up to spray about, but the bottom line is that it should be up to us to police ourselves, ignore negativities if we don't want to go there, and take control of our reality. Be the change.

For those who are new, before registration, the supertopo was a virtual toilet of negativity. It's way better now. The original internet climbing forum, rec.climbing used to be way more negative and wild as well.

Tell ya what, I'll repost my post-once-in-awhile "Baba's Sermon on Negativity" and folks can either flame me for it and reset our brains as the holiday season gets into gear.

Ho ho ho

Peace

The forum is dandy-fine the way it is (is there an echo in here?) - love the random, chaotic, non-conformist, akward nature of it, and the nuggets of good info and insight hidden amongst the choss. What could be more reflective of climbing and climbing culture (or lack thereof)?

Personally, I think that after the election, this forum improved significantly with some very interesting and entertaining posts.

Happy Turkey Day to all, with genuine gratitude for the nuggets and inspiration I've gleaned over the last year or so! Now to go touch a rock...
