It's been too long since I dealt personally with any Eastside lawyers, so please take my recommendations with a bit of salt. For example, the first person I thought of has passed away. Nonetheless, I know the following two lawyers were excellent when last I wsa involved (in the mid-1990's):

There's a criminal defense attorney in Bishop named Elizabeth something. Maybe it's Corpora? I worked in the DA's office there for a summer in 2011 when I was in law school and I saw most of the local attorneys in action. She had a good reputation for integrity and diligent representation. Instead of paying money to a lie-yer, why don't you instead call the public defender for the area? You will get solid and free legal advice over the phone.
You would have to tell him/her over the phone initially that you are too poor to afford a lawyer yourself, and ask him if he can help you. Most likely you can explain your citation, and get very wise counsel as how best to proceed.
But if you were to have to sit down with the guy, or were it actually to go to court, you might have to prove lack of income and/or net worth.

If you have a defense you can fight it yourself. Unless the hired gun plays poker with the judge there is not much more a lawyer can do unless it is a very novel defense you intend to raise.
15 years ago a friend of mine moved to Mammoth, I have not spoken to her in years. She is a great person and not your typical lawyer, she did a stint at LegalAid so she has a heart

Feel free to follow the above suggestion, but I'd be surprised if the public defenders are in the business of giving "free legal advice over the phone." You see, most lawyers have this concept of an "attorney-client relationship," and don't give legal advice until that has been established. And while public defender systems work differently in different states (and I know nothing about the California system), most of them probably have a concept of acting within the scope of their employment and within the scope of an attorney-client relationship. In lots of places, their reputation is that they don't do much for their actual clients, so it may seem unlikely they'll do much for non-clients. But again, call if you feel like it, you have nothing to lose but some time. (And PDs reputation here in Colo. is actually quite good; I also recall there's a PD from Mass. who posts on ST sometimes; he took me task for saying something mildly anti PD on the Trayvon thread, I recall.)
Now what I recommend you do is ask your legal question to the ST forum. Then you're sure to get all sorts of advice, perhaps some of it from lawyers (but who invariably practice in a different field of law and in a different jurisdiction--and who may well be incompetent for those and other reasons), more of it from people who had a friend or relative involved in a vaguely similar situation sometime or other and may recall the outcome, and even more from the usual ST crowd who know nothing much about anything, but like to see the product of brilliant minds "in print" on ST. (There's where I usually come in, my license to practice law in Colo. notwithstanding.)
It may provide some good entertainment and maybe you'll even get some good advice, along with even more terrible advice.
Edit--sorry, I missed the actual "crime" when I wrote the above. I was hoping/expecting for something at least mildly interesting. So you got a citation for a couple hundred bucks for something that you actually did (as I infer from your post)? Agree with others who surmise it's unlikely a lawyer will help you, and incredibly unlikely one will help you in a cost effective manner.
