"Ok then BRUCEE KY...

Let's change the verbiage to read, "Here's the TRUTH and REALITY"!"

Men who dishonor their uniform or status should be pissed upon, not honored.
Like simply telling lies.

Guttmacher’s report makes it clear that increased government funding for Planned Parenthood has made ZERO impact on decreasing the unintended pregnancy rate across the nation. Yes, you read that right, ZERO. It gets even more alarming. They found the pregnancy rate for poor women jumped by over 50%. It’s appalling!

NOWHERE in the Guttmacher report do the words "Planned Parenthood" or "Government Funding" appear. NOWHERE.

Your article doesn't even link to the Guttmacher report, it links to another whacko article.

Obviously, you don't have the reading comprehension of a binnacle, so you have to reference things that have INTERPRETED for you. You don't actually read the things that you use to support your position, but which actually undermine it.

If you had half a brain, you'd have read it, and understood that what it ACTUALLY said was that POOR women have higher rates of pregnancy because they are POOR. They have MUCH LESS access to effective birth control.....BECAUSE OF YOU! You and your sniveling ilk have done everything possible to defund reproductive services for the poor. And they have much more ABORTIONS as a result.

YOU, Chief, are the cause of these ABORTIONS, because you are part of a network that tries to restrict access to Planned Parenthood, and restrict access to birth control to women in general, health care in general.

You ABORTIONIST!

Will somebody please explain why all this ranting about Planned Parenthood is relevant to data from Mauritius, Japan, France, Italy, Mexico, Africa..... and to data from U.S. women born all the way back to 1885! I think that's a bit before any of this happened.

Abandon ship!

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Passengers on board a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice for more than a week are expected to be rescued by helicopter on Thursday after three icebreakers failed to reach the paralyzed vessel, officials said.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Coordination Centre, which is handling the operation, said early Thursday that weather conditions had improved in the area since Wednesday and rescue flights were likely to commence shortly. Wind in the area had died down to 10 knots (19 kmh) and visibility had improved, with conditions expected to remain favorable for the next 36 hours, the center said in a statement.

"A stunning day," expedition leader Chris Turney said in a video posted on his Twitter account, blue sky visible behind him. "Hopefully we'll hear about the evacuation soon."

The 74 scientists, tourists and crew on the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, which has been stuck since Christmas Eve, had been hoping the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis would be able to crack through the thick ice and allow them to continue on their way. The Aurora came within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the ship Monday, but fierce winds and snow forced it to retreat to open water.

The helicopter on board the Chinese-flagged vessel Snow Dragon will be used to rescue 52 scientists and tourists, a dozen at a time, over five hours. All 22 crew members are expected to stay with their icebound vessel, which is not in danger.

The maritime authority said the passengers will be flown 11 kilometers (7 miles) to the Chinese ship, from where they will be transported 4 kilometers (2 miles) by barge to the Australian icebreaker. They are expected to reach the Australian island state of Tasmania by mid-January.

OK, just about all the ideology brigade has chimed in about that ship trapped in the ice, sure that someone's misfortune makes a great talking point for their politics.

But it's a real ship with real people in real ice. Here's what actually happened to trap the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, attempting to retrace the route taken by its namesake (led by Australian Douglas Matson) in 1911-1914, during the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration:

It has been a sobering week. At the time we were initially caught by the sea ice, the Shokalskiy was just 2 to 4 nautical miles from open water. Now the sea ice distance has become even greater with the continued winds from the east, putting our nearest point of exit at some 16 nautical miles....
The wind is not unusual but what is unexpected is the major reconfiguration of thick multi-year sea ice to the east of the Mertz Glacier. In 2010, a large iceberg known as B09B, calved from the continent and collided spectacularly with the extended tongue of the Mertz Glacier. The knock-on effect has been that Commonwealth Bay has filled with sea ice (termed ‘fast ice’), preventing direct access from the sea to Mawson’s main hut at Cape Denison. Unfortunately for the AAE, it appears the region has just undergone a massive reconfiguration of sea ice, years after the loss of the Mertz Glacier tongue. This has been revealed by new satellite imagery which arrived today from the AAD/ACE CRC Sea Ice Group in Hobart, Tasmania. The satellite maps show the comparison before and after the event, with deep purple signifying 100% sea ice cover and dark blue, open water. (Note: the outline of the Mertz Glacier tongue is shown on the maps but disappeared following the collision with B09B). Crucially, these images show the extensive, thick multi-year sea ice along the eastern and southern edge of what was the Mertz Glacier Tongue (outlined by a red box) has been blown out in the last week and driven against our position by the persistent southeasterly winds. It is too early to identify the cause of this remobilisation of ice but we may be looking at the future long-term expansion of fast ice to the east of Commonwealth Bay.

The "Ship of Fools"

http://www.janetrice.com.au/

If the weather breaks, another attempt will be made to rescue them from the really bad global warming on Thursday, which, because of the time differences, would be sometime tonight (east coast time). If they’re able to be rescued, they’ll be ferried to a Chinese fossil fueled ship, then jump back on a fossil fueled helicopter to a fossil fueled Australian ice breaker. If they can’t be rescued, a fossil fueled American ice breaker is 10 days away. Either way, they’ll eventually (we hope), make it back to New Zealand (where the fossil fueled trip started…well, except for all the fossil fueled plane rides to NZ) or Australia. Then can take fossil fueled airplane trips home. All to let us know that climate change caused by fossil fuels is Bad.

Oh, and the ice is so bad that the Chinese ice breaker has been staying away and moving constantly.

Well, there's something we can all agree on: that Shackleton and his guys were the ultimate in badassness. One of my ultimate lifetime museum-going moments was to lay a hand on the actual James Caird, not a replica, which was the 21 or so foot boat that six of them sailed about 1000 miles from Elephant Island to South Georgia, surviving a huge storm and probably a 100-foot rogue wave, then having to cross an unmapped mountain range with no mountaineering gear (or experience, for that matter) finally having to butt slide the final descent before freezing to death. The original trademark of bad ass.

Just quit while you're ahead and don't hold up these guys as a counter example to the education-birthrate negative correlation just because they didn't give birth to any children.

The queef is so inconsistent that he lashes out and attacks people personally, simply because he is intellectually impotent. He can't argue theory, observation, or evidence, other than pilfered charts from right wing websites. He admits to disliking science with a vengeance, yet he is dominating a scientific discussion with endless ad hominem attacks. Hypocrite.

Socialist? Really? You are the one who never had to worry about paying your bills for your adult life. The military was your momma. She fed you, put a roof over your head, everything. What do you know about running a business and paying your bills.

The only other job that I'm aware of you having is your recently revealed career working for the State of California. Don't get me wrong here, most public servants work hard and are needed, just as a military is. Just don't go around accusing people of being socialists. You yourself have mentioned voting for candidates based on how they treat veterans.

The only check I've received from the government were tax refunds (haven't had one of those for a while), and a couple of checks for searches in the valley. If I don't find oil, I don't make money. It is harder than it seems. It is easy to find oil. It is hard to find enough to cover the cost of drilling.

Every barrel of oil I find is one less barrel that somebody has to die for overseas. Most people don't realize how rich the U.S. is when it comes to oil. We are still the third largest producer, and have already produced 190 billion barrels, which is greater than any country other than Saudi Arabia. Our rich oil reserves are one of the main reasons that we won WW2. We are running out of the easy to find oil, though. We are swimming in natural gas. The Iranians sit on some of the largest natural gas fields on the planet. They are converting their transportation fleet to natural gas so that they can sell that oil. It is their only income.

When I go out on a rig that is drilling a prospect of mine, I see a beehive of people working, sometimes millions of dollars worth of business, all as a result of an idea that I might have had in the shower. It is a cool feeling to realize how many bills will be paid, how many jobs I create.

Most people in the oil business will say that we use too much oil. Natural gas is far cheaper, far cleaner, and totally domestic. You don't need to keep a Nimitz class carrier group hanging around just to keep the cost down, either.

You say that you admire Shackleton. I've read Endurance more than once, and I admire him as well.

Shackleton didn't get to Antarctica in a C-130. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't our presence in Antarctica completely scientific? I've cruised a jobs website and they all seem to be funded by the NSF.

So you were there supporting scientific work? Hypocrite. You call people socialist while you spent your whole life with the military as your momma and attack people who are true capitalists? Hypocrite.

Go to the closest mirror and admire yourself.

I can't believe that you have pushed me so far that I'm playing your game: personal attacks that have nothing to do with the debate.

Do you still believe that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old?

My advice: Spend more time on Wikipedia. It has turned into a very good basic reference, and is surprisingly good with science.

You won't do that, though. You already know everything. What a dick.

FM,

Go buy the book "Endurance." One of the greatest adventure stories of all time. He never made it to the South Pole, but he saved all of his men.

Chief. Answer the question: Do you believe that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old? I remember you saying otherwise over on the Science/Religion thread.

He hates science, yet he types away on a computer designed by scientists and engineers.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE EARTH IS LESS THAN 10,000 YEAR OLD?

ANSWER THE QUESTION OR YOU ARE A COWARD.

My post upthread included notes from the Autstralasian Antarctic Expedition giving some background on how their ship became trapped in wind-driven sea ice. Conditions around Cape Denison apparently have been changing. Studying these changes was one of the expedition's science objectives, but it appears the changes are larger than thought.
The maps posted upthread show the most recent changes. Intrigued by the "spectacular" 2010 collision, which among other things seems to have made obsolete the Antarctic land ice mask used for sea ice mapping, I looked the 2010 event up. Here it is:

That is B09B (originally calved from the Ross Ice Shelf in 1987) in the center, and the fractured tongue of Mertz Glacier starting to drift away to the left. The Mertz fragment (which has since fractured further) is about 78 km long and 33 to 39 km wide.
