I used to work with "Wild Humboldt" a local mag in Humboldt Co, CA. A friend of mine wrote this for the mag. Great writting from a fantastic guy, Hiko Ito. Both Hiko and Tom Ogden in the article are fantastic climbers. Hiko quit and moved to Hawai. Tom is still in Humboldt.

Cool, thanks. When I was a smokejumper we flew over and jumped into the alps. I saw lot's of stuff that I meant to get back to. Problem is that the trail heads are a loooong drive from most of California and then the hikes are long too.

Cool article !
I went looking for Steelhead Spire on my Trinity Alps Wilderness map, and then searched NG Topo for the name .. nothing. Do you suppose it has been renamed ? Or maybe it just doesn't appear on these topos ?

Steelhead spire is either a climber name or they are trying to hide what they really climbed. I've never heard of it.
Really cool article. I used to know those mountains like the back of my hand. They are what inspired me to climb. I was a kid so I mostly fished and hiked my way through every summer.
We had all sorts of family and friend names for places up there, so maybe that's what steelhead spire is.
From what I can see, it looks like something out of stuart's fork, but I could be wrong. That picture from the summit seems like it's around the corner into a tight canyon that I can't place. It's either that or all the way around the other side of Hilton. Heck- I'm getting rusty.
On the other hand, I'd love to find info on climbing up there.

Hey, I figured it out! They are talking about those spires on the divide above Coffee Creek, near Red Rock Mountain, sort of.
The big peak in the background is Caribou. I was totally turned around.

Are they good? They look good and they aren't that far from the road, especially if you can get into the lodge.

I've enjoyed hiking, backpacking, and scrambling in the Trinity Alps, but have never seen any info about technical routes, with the exception of Ycatapom Peak. Definitely curious now .. something to research for next summer.
