Johnny wrote: Blame Obama...? for what? the oil-friendly administration you supported by electing bush for 8 years...?
Of course it was Obama chanting "drill, baby, drill".

As was the Clean Air and Water acts.
John...numbers don't lie...http://climateprogress.org/2010/06/02/bp-oil-disaster-is-cheney%E2%80%99s-katrina/
2003..."House energy bill includes $23.5 billion in tax breaks for dirty energy. The House passed another oil industry handout energy bill, H.R. 6, on March 11 that would allow oil and gas leasing in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, let companies avoid federal royalty payments on natural gas taken from the Gulf of Mexico, and provide for expedited environmental impact studies. The legislation would hand out $23.5 billion over 10 years in tax breaks to increase oil and gas production and $5.4 billion in subsidies and loan guarantees. The Senate once again passed the 2002 energy bill. The conference report to reconcile the two bills included the administration’s dirty energy policies and did nothing for consumers or clean energy; it was approved by the House but was blocked by a filibuster in the Senate. Yet the Senate still approved billions of dollars in tax credits for the oil and gas, coal, and nuclear industries."
2008..."Bush lifts moratorium on offshore drilling. Bush lifted the executive moratorium on offshore drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts on July 14. This moratorium was put in place in 1990 by Pres. George H.W. Bush. Bush then called on Congress to lift its own annual ban on drilling, as John McCain embraced “drill, baby, drill” that year."

Fat wrote: Using your rational, I'd like to blame all of this on FDR. After WWII, he could have kept the ME with it's oil riches, would have prevented many wars, generated enough oil revenue to pay for everyone's health care and funded a wonderful lifestyle for every American, so it's FDR's fault.
Can't you read? From the very beginning I said this was BP fault, along with Transocean and Halliburton.
Does kind of remind you of the Bush's invasion of Iraq...no back up plan.
BP has been lying through their teeth!!

So have I, Bob. So did fattrad and apogee. I posted when, despite apogee's post to the same effect, partisans of one particular party persisted in saying it was Bush/Cheney's fault. To show the absurdity of such a position, after the current adminstration had been in power for almost 40% of its term (and congress for 2/3 it its term), I simply added rationale for why the current party in power bears the responsibility.
This should not be a partisan issue. I'll knock it off if you will.

The corporations are at fault. After all, they had everything to do with the spill and aftermath...this includes buying the government so that Bush and Obama alike failed to apply or enforce protections and environmental studies (like giving a permit under the assumption that "Nothing can go wrong"
The companies listed may be particular offenders or not, but I suspect that Exxon, CHevron or any other major oil company is and would behave similarly.
That's the problem with "privatization" they say we'll get efficiency but we also get butt covering and cost cutting. The truly largest oil companies in the world are owned and operated by the countries whose oil they are pumping and whose profits directly support the government/people. Wonder if their track record is any different?

Have the private and public oil producers any different track record on the issues that matter to us?

Obama asked for and got the job. Currently he is 1/3 of the way through his term. Period, end of statement.
What this means is "either he is up to the task or he isn't." He certainly cashes his checks.
And, unfortunately right now it isn't looking good for him ... nor us for that matter.
This isn't a partisan statement. This is fact.
The only facts you stated are that he got the job and and a 1/3 through his first term.
Fact...BP said they have the tools and could handle a spill TEN TIMES the size of the current one.
Fact...they lied.
Fact...this type of spill at this depth in the ocean has never happened.
Fact...both private and government officials are treading into new territory.

Obama is working to clean up the Augean stables left by 30 years of Republican mis-management, and is a centrist at that. Is it any wonder he hadn't gotten around to this issue earlier? Whatever, my guess is that energy and environment policies will now be much higher priority, as they ought to be.

Just that I studied some classical history once, long ago, and like to throw in the occasional allusion in that theme. It may be something of an exaggeration, as is most of what is posted here, but at least is poetic.

Hear, hear, Anders. That quote captures the essence of why I enjoy this forum so much. In addition to the climbing conversations that originally attracted me, there's both classical history, poetic allusion and exaggeration -- sufficient conditions, surely, for an excellent discussion.

No Fattrad, its 30 years. The Clinton years were not exactly what you would describe as a vigorous rollback of the free market fundamentalism of the Reagan Bush years.
Or in Skipts language..." I dazzle you with the irrefutable rectitude of my rightness which is so much righter than you so I am will bask in the rightness of my facts which is so much better than yours which is wrong and also not right".......or something like that.....
