On topic or off? Not quite sure. Oh, the mind goes to wild places when given a bit of fodder...

Wild guess: something to do with one of the early ascent attempts on the Eiger.

I'm only just learning about this.

I know 'the bavarian'.

I heard about it while on the climbing route where the maneuver was performed.

OK,

Our lanky German friend (the bavarian), has a very long reach. At the Grotto, he makes an awkward move, because he can, but it doesn't help.

So we could define the term as a climbing move which is improbable, yet ineffective.

(not my photo)

Now, we have another maneuver to consider:

The Lithuanian Reach-Back

This move is called for when you stick your one large cam just before the 40 feet of offwidth that it is needed for, and having realized this, invert on a foot jam to try to unstick it.

Happened last weekend. (sorry, no photo)

The Ren Hoek method of Bavarian reach-around prevention:

"I promise to wear unwashed laderhosen every single day for the rest of my life!"

As for the "Lithuanian reach-back", in the case of solo-aiding Liberty Crack, it can't much be helped...

Perhaps someone from Leavenworth would know about this technique. It probably involves lederhosen.

There is a Lithuanian Roof/Lip, on Liberty Bell. Named for Alex Bertulis.
