Every time I see one of these resole threads I have to wipe a tear from my
eye. Jules was the best, ever.
I used Rubber Room last resole batch (5 pairs for myself and friends). All are still performing well 1 year later.

Barrys Resoles for sure - as good as new (or better) Barry is the only one I trust for the past 20 years or so, to resole my shoes - and I live on the other side of the planet!

I have gone with the Rubber Room because they do Acopa rubber. Maybe others do now also but that was my determining factor. Never had an issue with their work.

I've used dave page for hiking boots- a pair of the original la sportiva makalus. Fifteen year old boots cam back good as new - or better because he put the sole on that allows a step in crampon.
I've used Barry's- again excellent work by barry.
Since I live in Bishop, I use the rubber room exclusively now. Their work is very good. They have a lot of options for rubber, but my Yosemite formed brain just wants stealth.
I go through a lot of resoles, four or five resoles a pair usually. They are never as good as new, but the Rubber room gets them close as you can get.
The trick is to turn them in before the rand starts to go. I rarely have that much discipline, but that's the trick to prolonging the life of your shoes.
I still climb from time to time in blue Kaukulators that the Rubber Room keeps breathing new life into.
I go through a lot of resoles- one or two a year. I blame the Buttermilk rock and lots of climbing, not the resole job. They have to deal with what I give them.

I have had problems with the rubber room since thier move. I used wheeler & wilson - wilson's east side - now the rubber room - first 25 years great - last 3 years not so good. I find that resoling by someone that knows what they are doing in no way harms the shoe & I have shoes that have been resole more than 5 times - still fit well - never had resoles ware faster.

We have also had some bad resoles from Rubber Room: delam, and one pair where they ground right through the (previously completely intact and barely worn) rand at the tip, a bad spot to do that; same problems as reported by others, so there is a certain percentage of flat out bad work coming out. Some years back (original location) I had a couple of very good resole jobs from them, but since then it appears that quality is unreliable. So we send shoes to the Cobbler and Cordwainer in New York (www.cobcord.com), haven't had a lemon yet in 10-15 resoles.

I would take boots or sandals to Dave Page but I won't use him for rock shoes again and I work walking distance from his shop...its not really a rock shoe operation anymore they have one guy who comes in on the weekend and does them and the quality is inconsistent at best.
Ramuta's ( http://www.ramutasresoles.com/ ) formerly of seattle now of Montana gets my shoes. It is run by a climber who grew up working in a family owned shoe repair shop. 30 bucks for a half sole 6 for a rand patch, never had a rand patch fail though I tend to send in my shoes before they need one. Never had a resole delaminate ... better then the stock glue job on sportivas.
I am also a proponent of the "let the resole cure for a couple of weeks before using" method locker once exposed.

So Robert,
Is Pat in addition to Locker, or did I miss something and Locker is no longer resoling?
I've had great resoles from Locker.
I had a hideous experience with Yosemite Bum several years back, have never gone back.
I haven't tried the Rubber Room in the last 5 or 6 years so can't comment. I heard a rumour that there now is a resoler in San Diego. Can anyone confirm that?

I'll add myself to the list of people who have had Rubber Room delam issues. They also had a hard time getting it done in two months time, and gave me flak for calling them on it.
Dave Page has done almost all of my work prior to this and since. Never seen anything wrong with the quality or workmanship there.

I've never had a delam problem with the Rubber Room. I use them at least twice a year.
As for shoes being resoled over five times, it depends on the shoe and the damage to the shoe. Where's locker? He knows the ins and outs.
My five ten ascents (my favorite shoe) were done after two resoles. I think that was because the toe box stretches- they'd just get too sloppy.
My Kauks- I have no idea how many resoles they've had.

John Ramuta-Helena, Montana. Better than new. May be a bit far for So Cal customers.
Werner, been thinking of doing my own. Like Mugs, do all my trigger wires too, though I find small aircraft cable a little slicker than bailing wire. But I get your points. Climbers hardly cook their own meals anymore it seems and stay in motels.

I do ultimately have to agree with Werner...I always used to do my own resoles...Even at the crags. I used to do them for Al Bartlett when he owned Positive Resoles a ways back. They aren't really too hard...

While I agree with Werner that it's not that hard to do your own, now that I've joined the plutocracy, it takes too long.
I've used Barry partly because he's relatively close by ( 35-minute drive or less [if the cops aren't looking]), but mainly because he does such good work. I can't compare him to other contemporary re-solers, because I haven't used any others. In any case, not only his re-soling, but his general repairs are excellent. One of my pairs he's helped keep alive are ten-year-old Huecos that are still my favorites for long climbs.

I'll add a thumbs-up for Locker. He did a good job on the one pair I sent him. Fast turnaround and fair price.
Locally (Seattle) I used Ramuta for a long time. His parents' shoe repair shop is a block from my office so pick-up and drop-off was easy, but the main thing was that he did excellent work. Posts upthread indicate he's moved to Montana, but I expect that hasn't affected the quality of his work.
