We finally got a break in the weather here in S. Idontno. Stein & I thought it would be fun to test Royal’s shoes: the famous RR’s. Stein has his pair from the 70’s and I have my $8.00 E-Bay specials.
How would they perform on “Rocky Point’s" smooth water-worn basalt?
Seemed appropriate to "pound some iron" and tie in with a bowline.

when my college sweetheart decided we weren't going steady any more, she returned the size 7 robbin's boots. my mom sang their praises for standing on the hilt of a spade. in addition to routine garden digging and shrub removal, she also dug, formed, mixed a sack at a time and poured, a sinuous curb that wandered a full circuit around the backyard, containing the turf and it's mower.
my dad poured plenty of concrete for the department of water and power on the owens river project, and on projects like steam powered generator plants near the san pedro harbor. i did concrete formwork on dams, sewer treatment plants and high rise hotels. dad and i agreed she was in the club. in my mind her position is secure in the cult of the blue suede shoes

Rapping off Herman would be a last resort.
The Inukshuks are all free-standing with no cement used in constuction. On the next photos you can see where I have shimmed the bigger rocks with pebbles.
Herman has been "solid as a rock" since I constructed him in 2000. However, Franz blew down in 60 MPH gusts a few years back.
I have to re-shim the joints once a year or so.
Hooblie: I can see how RR's would be awesome for sinking a shovel. Mine are stiff as a board. There is no flex at all.

More photos. Stein, with the encouragement of a top rope on his bowline on a coil: did FA of Northwest Arete of Rocky Point.
Fritz, with the moral support of a piton above him: tests the RR's on friction. The damn shoes are un-bending. The 40 year old rubber felt like steel on the smooth basalt.

Had mine re-soled 10 years ago with the good stuff.
I was laughin' on 5.6!
But they're still great for standing in slings.

I love those boots.
Many of the closets that got the purge here in Boulder during the 90s produced Robbins Boots, and as they hit the used gear stores I bought them up and knocked around in the mountains with them.
For fourth class & easy fifth and scree the stiff sole is a real plus.
I cracked the steel shanks or otherwise beat up the about three pair in that time frame.
Still have one pair I keep for working a shovel around the house!

Fritz - isn't that the "state-of-the-art" for Idaho? Always takes a couple of decades for new things to arrive as I recall.
My RRs dried up long ago but my soft steel pitons are still good.

Spider: Re Idontno being 20 years behind.
When we both lived in Moscow, the "liberal" Lewiston Morning Tribune ran a "tongue in cheek" editorial. It advocated saving Idaho taxpayers money by eliminating the Idaho Legislature.
Their last piece of legislation: would abolish the Idaho House and Senate, and simply adopt whatever laws the Oregon legislature passed, as Idaho law.
After twenty years had gone by!
