Hi There Taco people,

First of all, thank all of you for your kind & most flattering responses.
How sweet it is!

I have read tons of your posts & wished I was one of your group.
I am old enough to appreciate how lucky you guys are to have each other.

I have had a wonderful life, not all roses but great all the same.
I was a deep powder skier at Alta, UT., traveled to 19 countries, spent over twenty years as a high end antique dealer, had my own outdoor birding store in Ridgefield CT for ten years. I now live by a golf course in FL & work at Best Buy, I play den mother to a lot of twenty something’s. No, I am not a geek but close enough. LOL Yes, there was life after Yosemite.

My husband of 25 years died in 1998, that has given me a lot of free time to think about the special people who have passed through my life.
Warren Harding was just one of these people.

Yes, I will tell more Warren stories.

I think it will be more fun if I bring out the old stories one at a time. Hopefully, some of you will tell me about yourselves & some pictures. Hint, hint.

I will start with the story behind “Down Bound” I am guessing most of you don’t know or remember this one.

So later taco people & again thank you for your “super” welcome.

All the Best,

Park Rat

Park Rat,
So cool to have a new friend at the campfire! What kind of art fueled your desire for an art degree?

I like everything, but stone sculpture, wood carving, and the impressionists/surrealists are what usually turns my twinkie the most.

Tell me something about art!!

Thanks Taco People,

Painting wise I am a realist, nothing to brag about, I used to sketch in pen & ink in my park days. In my next life I will be a graphic artist, I love to play with pictures, I have a hundred Yosemite pictures as screen savers.

I was a better art dealer than an artist, but my painters eye has been more than useful over the years. I lived in Carmel by the Sea for several years, everyone there was into painting.
I summered in the park & wintered in Carmel.

I keep saying I will take up serious painting when I get old. LOL

Best,

Park Rat

I think I have told this Warren story before on ST in another thread. Here goes:

In the late 1970's I was in the Mountain Room Bar having a late night drink with a bunch of friends. Warren comes by our table slightly(!?!?) inebriated on red wine. My friends introduce me to Warren as one of the Valley 'young guns' and that gets him all agitated. He pulls me up from my chair and starts mumbling something like, "the East Face of Washington Column doesn't go free. I want to see you do it!"

So, here we are in the Mountain Room Bar with Warren trying to drag me out of the place so I can go show him that his route goes free. He is sloshing red wine out of his glass all over my white painter's pants (standard Valley hardman attire of the day) and just will not relent. Finally, my friends subdue Warren and I escape his clutches.

Pretty funny and no harm done.

Welcome Park Rat

I walked into the living room of some old ,old friends in Friday Harbor, Washington years ago and immediately spied a very small Bierstadt painting on the wall.

"That's a Bierstadt" I proclaimed, "do you have any idea how valuable that is"?

"No, but you are the first person in years that knew who the artist was. How did you know that was a Bierstadt?"

Well anybody that has spent time in Yosemite should have a good idea of the man and his paintings and the incredible mood he portrays with them.

My friends were old and retired and living on the financial edge. Their dream was to travel for several years while they were still physically able.

They sold the painting for over $70,000, fulfilled their dream and their daughter has been pissed at me ever sense.

Sounds like Warren did not plan to go down gracefully!
That's what too many Mt Room years will do to a man.
Sooner or later, they will catch up with you.

Glad you got away! Back in the day, I would have saved you myself. LOL

Well, Park Rat, many of us who climbed were so glad there were nice folk like you working in the Curry Co. Made my day when a waitress would not tally it up correctly on purpose. I suppose we looked as poor as we were. Now Guido has just talked high art, but you should see the kind of picture he posted of me and another. Pretty low, actually, so watch out for these guys. In any case, I worked in the Lodge cafeteria as a janitor in the winter of 61-62 while waiting for the storms to abate, but got fired before they did and so spent many days by the fire there. Tell your stories! I liked Warren. He always had an interesting take on things and was a talker, at least after the red took hold.

PR, did you ever meet, and have the 'pleasure' of serving, Fred Beckey?

Guido, nice story! I didn't know you worked for Antiques Roadshow, although your presence on SuperTopo Roadshow is suggestive. Did your friends give you a commission?
