A great man such as John Bachar deserved exactly the send off (memorial) he got yesterday, Monday, July 27, 2009, at Mammoth Lakes, California. Friends drove prodigious distances and flew in from various western states to be present. As many commented, such a collection of American climbers in unlikely to ever reconvene.
On this difficult day, I was witness to a few miracles. I had struggled with accepting that my childhood friend and climbing partner, John Bachar, was really and truly gone. When I first arrived at the memorial, I suddenly felt like I was drowning. If it wasn’t for the immediate intervention of Jody Langford and Karl Baba, I would have been in for a very long afternoon. Thanks, boys.
Next, the climbing community can count itself blessed to have Rick Accomazzo. Ricky Emced the event (that ran for better than three hours) and was the emotional glue that held together a situation which in less sure hands could have gone south in a hurry. Ricky’s personal memories, poignant commentary and steadying presence behind the microphone set a tone of openness, strength, and, in a word, love, that transformed a potentially dire situation into a rare kind of celebration. I always counted myself grateful to have Ricky as my hometown climber partner. Yesterday, I was proud of him as a human being.
I was especially impressed with the presence of John’s immediate family – his father (I cannot imagine having to burry a child), brother, sister, son Tyrus, Tyrus’ mother, and John’s girlfriend. I now understand where John got his courage. I very much appreciate John seniors (John ll) words to me.
I speak for everyone when I say we were all honored to have Royal Robbins drive all the way there from Modesto and speak to us about John. Early on, Royal was like a God to us, the climber we all aspired to be. Having Royal on hand was like having a high priest there to sanctify an event few of us could really fathom. Rather than cower us with pronouncements, Royal kept things personal, human and real, and we were all much the better for it. Thank you, Royal.
Throughout the event I saw the outpouring of grief and good will cut through whatever differences might have arisen between people. At various times I found myself recounting the most fantastic memories with people with whom I, sadly, had grown estranged for reasons ranging from entanglements and petty misunderstandings to nothing at all. In the process I got reconnected with the people around whom I was formed. I touched into myself in a vital, half-forgotten way and recalled where I came from. These things will serve me for the rest of my life.
For all of those who were not there, I trust your presence was felt and your thoughts and feelings made real to John because that's the way we all roll.
I hope that those who took pictures will take the time to share them with all of us.
And to my friend, John Bachar – I’ll be seeing you later. Till then:

Sincerely,
John Long
PS: All the thanks goes to Ron Gomez for making this event a reality. Thank you, Ron.

Thanks, John.
Only the sudden hip surgery of my 93-year-old mother kept me from being with all of you yesterday. I grieve the lost opportunity to be with you and especially John's family.
Thanks for bringing us a glimpse of the day. I continue to struggle to express thoughts and feelings about John's loss.

Largo- poignant and touching all at once, no surprise there, as your words rarely fall short..
Thanks for the scoop. It sounds as if the memorial was very special indeed. A lasting tribute to my hero.
Today, I turned 40. You made my day, again.
"All climbs were easy for Bachar, and he had to make his own difficulties. He completely dominated the cliff with his grace and confidence. He never got rattled, never lost control, and you knew if he ever got killed climbing, it wouldn't be his fault; it would be a gross transgression of all taste and would prove that climbing was absurd and all wrong. You'd sell all your gear and curse God for the rest of your life- on aesthetic, not moral grounds." From " The Only Blasphemy"
Climbing is still right.
I'm not gonna sell my gear just yet.
I'm not quite cursing God again, but close.
John, thank you for all your inspired tales of heroes past.
RIP Tobin, Yabo, and JB.
I'm sorry for your loss. It hurts me too.

Funerals and memorials are always so bittersweet, but it sounds like the sweet part helped to compensate a bit for the sadness.
My condolences to all of John's friends and family.

John,
the life experience of seeing a friend off into never-never, or forever-forever, or whatever-whatever land sanctifies the origins of your true and well-understood smile.
for tears travelling across wind-worn cheeks amongst john's peaks exude hope in every direction.
which is where john bachar now resides.

In one of those magical Sierra sunsets, I left the memorial and began my drive back to LA. After passing through a brief rain shower, I was blessed with one of the most vibrant rainbows I've seen in a long time. Anastasia commented that it was John showing his approval of the day and his presence looking down on all of us.
Largo, you summed up the day perfectly. It's not something I will ever forget as well. It was a great medium for all of us climbers to come to grips with what has happened and how we have all been influenced by Bachar.

Thank you for your post and account of John's Memeorial Largo.
Having just returned home to Seattle from a two week road trip it was impossible for me to be there...though I will likely always wish that I had been.
John was a bright and powerful Spirit, and a better friend one would be hard pressed to find.
A favorite quote from Coltrane,
"I want to be a force for good. I know there are bad forces here that bring suffering to others and misery to the world, but I want to be the force which is truly good.'
Thanks for having been that very thing JB.

nice post, john.
i've been to far too many of these in the last year or so. yesterday was rougher than i'd expected, probably because it brought back all the other memorials i've been going to. but it was wonderful to see folks i hadn't seen in years.
tyrus was remarkably composed and thoughtful. the straw porkpie was an especially nice touch.
thanks to ron and everyone else for doing so much heavy lifting at a difficult time.

The whole day was interesting and blessed. The drive up was the best drive I've ever had to the ditch *or* Tuolumne, in all the years I've been driving back and forth. It's as if someone were pushing traffic and obstacles out of my way the entire trip. I left in time to get there an hour early, I got there 2 hours early. Without speeding, I was in the ditch, from Visalia (45-hour south of Fresno) in 2:15. Mammoth in under just 4 hours. It was freaky.
Anytime I got behind someone who was driving too slow, they pulled out at the first opportunity. Every single one of them. When does *that* happen, even with just one or two cars?! Even when I came up on a semi pulling doubles between the gate and the Valley, as soon as I rounded the bend and saw him, he dove into a tiny pullout to let me by.
As far as the memorial... An amazing day, an amazing group of people gathered, for an amazing man. As Largo said above, "such a collection of American climbers is unlikely to ever reconvene.". While sad to be there for the reason we were, I was happy to have been able to share a portion of Bachar's life with him and to be a part of something so amazing. It was also great to see so many friends and to meet so many awesome folks. Lots of people I've looked up to over there years. Many of them, even moreso now.
I am truly inspired by John's family and so thankful they allowed all of us to share the day with them. It was the second best gift they'd given us. Truly wonderful, strong people. Tyrus... Wow! That's the first word that comes to mind. The secong word....? As he said about his father, what a BadAss. Tyrus is the definition of control and such a cool, honest kid who seems to have an amazing amount of depth for his age.
The drive home brought some of the most beautiful sights in that section of the East Side, I'd ever seen. I took many photos. I can't think of any better way to say it than Bill - "it was John showing his approval of the day and his presence looking down on all of us. " It really felt that way. Now that I think about it, the whole day felt that way.
I did shoot some photos at the memorial (not many tho). Most of us were a little uncertain about cameras, etc...
"The greatness of those assembled to honor John Bachar, was, and could only be surpassed by the man himself."
Perfect, Dave!

Hugely important event on probably hundreds of levels for us, and for climbing in general, one of the great gatherings ever in our art.
Here are some shots I took. Mostly I couldn’t raise the camera.... I felt it was all so sensitive, private actually. When I got there early, Dave Yerian was standing by Royal who was acting as an affable yet daffy parking lot greeter. As I approached the two, it was as if an avalanche of grief catapulted me into Yerian. Royal had to look away, even though he couldn’t remember me for awhile. Dave and I sobbed.
I also have to note that Tyrus, John’s 13 year old son, was spellbinding. He actually retold the events of those last few days, especially that morning. He also ruminated on the issue of "the why" in a manner that also required him to pause for about two minutes, staring at us in a way that was not void but full of content and an awareness that frankly I thought, spanned our entire event and the death of his father. It was just amazing and I think many felt that John was continuing on in this brilliant son.
Dale Bard was also amazing. Of all people there, he knows what it means to lose a loved one, having lost Alan 12 years ago on THE SAME DAY AS John died.... Dale and Alan were almost like twins. He stressed the importance of joy in the event, to celebrate John and carry on but he did this in a way that was still meaty, strong and loving rather than fey or oblivious. I was really helped out by this, as I am sure many were.
I could go on, maybe later. Anyway here is what I have:
Ricky Acomazzo emcing the event superbly. What a man.
Steve West, reading a letter that Roger Breedlove wanted to have read to us since he coud not come
Ronnie Kauk arrived just before the talking began, hanging out in the back feeling it all I am sure:
Dale Bard in mid talk:
Tyrus Bachar during his unforgettable recollection and soliloquy:
Royal contemplating while getting sunburned to bits during the talk:
Vern Clevenger who many probably want to have an update on. He is okay:

A singular moment that will live on in our collective and remarkably-intertwined lifetimes. This was a fitting tribute and memorial to the passing of a great man!
In keeping with our cherished tradition I, too, took very few pictures. The need to capture the time was far less important that the desire to live in the moment. JB's power has been even more evident over the last several weeks; a power to cause us to look forward into our reflection in the past. ...with a fondness and gratitude that I will never be able to fully express. A love, supreme.

I am really sorry that I was not able to attend John’s memorial. Although John and I were not close, like all old soldiers, from the beginning of time, we have more in common than we could have ever imagined when we were young hotheads.
When I thought I might make it to the memorial, I started trying to work out my own thoughts of John’s history, fame, contribution to climbing. The letter that was read was actually my prepared notes to say something at the memorial, if it was appropriate, or at least have comments to make to John’s family in private. (I cannot image losing one of my kids; the grief must be unbearable.) Thanks to Steve West for reading it on my behalf.
Hello All,
I am sorry to say that I cannot attend the memorial service for John.
I have been thinking about John’s contribution to climbing and the out-pouring of grief and condolences. I knew John only a little in the first few years he started climbing in the Valley. He, along with other young climbers, mostly those who became the Stonemasters, was tearing up the place and extending the nature of free climbing in ways that astounded the earlier generations.
They were also loud and obnoxious, as almost all teenagers are, but boy could they climb.
We could see that it was still climbing, but it was very far removed from previous experiences: they looked like regular people and seemed to have the same basic qualities, but they didn’t seem to have any boundaries.
After a life time of watching that group of young climbers establish modern rock climbing, reflecting on John’s unique contribution to climbing is interesting: he made a specialty of free soloing hard routes, which he had done previously (more like art--a musician, an ice skater, a dancer—than sport), and he pushed bolt protected ground-up free about as far as can be done. He mastered the space within these stylistic boundaries and fostered a positive public image both for the benefit of making a living and, later, for being an accessible, and loved, member of a larger climbing community.
I think that those of us who know the inner workings of climbing most appreciate John’s life time of climbing. We know how difficult it is to climb so well on hard ground, to climb so smoothly. Many of us have mastered that for a few seasons. But it is really hard to sustain that over a life time, and pretty amazing to do it without protection, to force the mastery to uncompromising levels. Some of our tribe have followed this path for relatively short periods, sometimes recklessly, sometimes at extremely high levels of difficulty, but John maintained it for many years, a unique achievement.
It was his choice, his efforts, his creativity, his commitment. A stellar achievement.
He will be missed.
I am sorry that I cannot say this in person to John’s family and friends at the memorial.
My condolences
Roger

Felt blessed to be with a fine tribe of heros and misfits (the same guys) to send John off with respect and panache. I salute the community and especially those who showed their Heart.
Great to meet those whom I only knew by name or online and also great to reconnect with old friends.
Thanks to everyone who took part and made this happen. I know there are many who would have loved to attend. As it was, there was barely room for those who showed up so let me suggest that we climbers just choose a date or a place (Cathedral Beach? Tenaya Lake beach?) and have an "Open to all Bachar - Inspires us" event that we roll ourselves organically.
A while back I suggested those who buy my recent Bachar Images donate the profit portion of the deal to the Tyrus fund. At the time I hadn't met Tyrus but figured John loved him and I'm ready to support that.
After meeting him, I'm stoked to be a part of helping the Man jr. Out. Tyrus rocked the memorial by speaking the truth, and conveying what it was like to hang with John in a story-driven jazz ramble that made you feel like you were there with John eating carnitas and surfing radio channels on a road trip. The little brother is going to make us all proud with a bit of support from the community.
My Tyrus fund thread along with my thoughts on John are posted here.
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=906230
I was honored that Ron Gomez made use of some of my words regarding grief in his address.
Kudos to so many for taking a high view of John and their relationships with him without whitewashing John's sharp edges in the process.
Thanks to Cashner for hosting a fine "after-memorial" to Largo and Jody for deferring the costs of prints I gave out, and to all those who buried hatchets or prioritized Love and Brotherhood over any petty stuff.
The event and the atmosphere reflected John's personal power. It was hardly a surprise that, when it was all said and done, a rainbow testified that John was in good hands, just out of reach.
Peace
Karl

From a favorite book:
"Because you are important, everything you do is important. Every time you forgive, the universe changes; every time you reach out and touch a heart or a life, the world changes; with every kindness and service, seen or unseen, my purposes are accomplished and nothing will ever be the same again."
What a magical time in Mammoth yesterday!
I saw allot of kindness yesterday, allot of tender hearts. You see it too, in the pictures on this thread; deep and lasting friendships, love and concern for one another.
Thanks Yerian for your sharing your heart with us, and reminding us once again what it's all about .

It was an incredible day and I felt very privileged to be there.
The sax solo came up through my soul, through my feelings and out to the sky. Powerful. Cleansing.
All of the speakers that I saw had important messages for all.
The opportunity to talk with so many about such an impressive and important member of our tribe, cathartic.
Thanks especially to Doug, Dave Y, Anastasia, Autumn Talsky and of course John L. for this post.
I had one of the best days in a long time today just enjoying all Tuolumne has to offer and I have yesterday to thank for that.
Thank you all, condolences to his family and close friends, and thanks JB for showing us the way!

Thanks so much to all for sharing the pics, and for all those who put the event together. So sorry not to make it. Running our first summer adventure camp on Donner Summit for 40 kids and leading 15 kids in my own climbing camp yesterday, leaving town for me was not going to happen, but I am passing on the climbing spirit big time, and I did tell the climbing kids what I was missing yesterday both as a tribute to a hero and a reminder to new teen climbers of the seriousness of soloing.
Love to all who were there yesterday, so many friends I wished I could have seen.

Thanks’ to the Bachar family for letting all of us share your celebration of John’s amazing life.
Ron Gomez and others put in a ton of hard work to make this happen, thank you.
…..when the man played the saxophone, I felt the presence of John right there with all of us. I had tears in my eyes but slowly a smile started to crack and I felt better about things.
I went to Stoney Point yesterday; it was great to be alive and climbing with good friends.

It was a beautiful event. Thank you Michelle, Lynn, Paola, Ron, Val, The Bachar and Karafa family. I kept seeing rainbows throughout the drive. It finally hit me that it was John telling us that he was home. I also saw the most beautiful and yet familiar sunset. I don't know if this is all in my head but I swear... I remember seeing that same sunset over the desert after the car accident. It makes me think that Steve and few others were there enjoying the show sharing a laugh with Bachar.

Sorry I could not be there, but so good to see the passion power of climbers put to honoring a great, to coming together, celebrating the good in the game, and loving.
Now (and at regular intervals into the future), let's put our money where are tears and loss are - to supporting Tyrus in his time of need.

What a honor and privilege to see.
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer,
But Royal is the imbodiment of the Golden Age and seeing all you rad studs (best of the best),
made me think, we would not even have climbing or any routes to climb, if it were not for you, I'm cut to the quick.
Hey Mike "Bondo" Bond, I haven't seen you in like 30yrs, you have not changed at all! I'm like a worked Hacky Sack, Ha! Ha!
Remember Surfer Craig, the Lifeguard at Curry pool, Dan "Woody" Woodward, and Cutty!
Man we were way off the deck- with are feet on the ground, back then.
Climbings the best, movement is freedom,
dang, I feel one coming on?

shooting images at such occasions always seem a bit of an intrusion to the other people there, though for the most part no one seemed to care too much.
Also, it is a distraction from what is going on, when you're thinking making images you aren't thinking about the matter at hand, in this case, John's life. At some point, the images start to make sense and the process becomes less distracting.
Here are some that I took on my old camera, B&W film (Fuji Neopan 1600) mostly with my 50 mm f1.4 lens on the Nikon FM2N body, old school... the lens was mostly closed down to its minimum aperture, f22. There was a lot of light, probably too much...

Quite the gathering ... thanks to everyone involved for putting together a wonderful send-off for John, and for sharing pictures and thoughts from that day.
I went up to the Dike Wall early Tuesday morning. Sobering. Beautiful Sierra granite above Lake George. It was good to just sit there for a while in the sun and breeze, thinking about my own close calls and friends who've passed and the connections we have, the tribal legends and rituals we share.
It's an honor to be a part of this community.

As usual you always put into words so easy for all to cherish...
It was such an emotional and powerful day. Tyrus carried on with the control that runs in the bachar bloodline. It was an honor to be there for one who has done so much for my life and my dreams.
Rick- you never cease to amaze me and your calming demeanor kept me in awe all day long. Thanks for letting me attempt to speak the words that i feel for John.
to the Stone Masters- Along with JB, you too have moved, touch and affected so many lives over the years and what i tried to say but could not through too many tears is thank you for showing me how to climb, how to live and how to dream. All that i am and all that i have climbed is a direct result of "letting the KID tag along" all those years!!!!

It was a humbling experience to be in such distinguished company honoring John Bachar. Reflecting on times of yesteryear looking into the eyes of individuals I hadn’t seen in 40 years or more was simply amazing. In comparison of the many gathered to pay tribute I have nothing of any extraordinary accomplishment in the mountains other than consistency of witness season after season; a witness to lives woven together in a fabric of experience that has been played out in some of the most beautiful places on the planet.
The question of what has been accomplished in all the toil will be continually debated for generations to come. I would say at this point in my life as a climber/skier the loving friendships and the camaraderie we feel as a tribe is what I cherish most. The outpouring of positive energy released by the passing of John Bachar is evidence enough that our partners in pursuit is what has made it all so worthwhile.
I hope for Johns’ family and his many great friends peace in knowing his energy and spirit has lifted us all to a greater level of appreciation. Our dear friend Paola, you have such grace. We love you and are here moving forward in support to live well, love much and let go.

Dudes heart to the fallen. Expression says it all. And we do all grieve. Yes we do, big time.
Lynn Hill .... what an awesome human being. Lynn stepped up and said to Acopa at the Memorial that she would help them be a name. Sweet Gal. You will be supported! Lynn also told all those at the Memorial that on the first free ascent of the Nose it was JB that gave her the battle cry, "It goes Boys". Sweet !!! Dan Boy spoke nada but Good about Lynn Hill.
Thanks Lynn, and Peace to you and your son.

What a great loss to the climbing community and for John's son Tyrus and John's family. I couldn't imagine having to live and have any of my children pass on before me. My brother just went through that.
Just looking at the photo's of the memorial you could feel the emotions and the awe of such a loss.
Its good to see the ol climbing "tribe" in one place, its to bad it was for such a sad reason. Even the "kid" showed up and your no longer a kid Kurt.
What a tremendous show of the community coming together for Bachar and his family.

So then we have our Jtree friend, Al Dude, and a Mammoth local whose name I knew and forget. Sorry !! Check out the "goggles". Mammoth Dude made them by himself. They are cool, soft and sweet leather with tooling. Nice !!! Peace Dude from lynne
Borrowed the handmade goggles so my fans could take pics. Shee, bitd I would never post a photo like this. A Fool mixed with hilarity. But ya know John Bachar showed me don't take yo self seriously. One time lots of John's friends mailed pics of his legs and climbing out at Josh. They made fun of his skinny legs and were laughing. I mailed jb and said, "what up" these old fat dudes criticizing yo legs. He said, "they just be having fun...it's ok." He meant it. JB Loved yo all. Knew who he was and lived it to his best.
JB not only freed the rock....freed alot more for himself and us. So we can spend our days going for it .... in his name and his zen. lrl

Dear All,
Thanks for the memorial pics. I'm still crying for the man I met in '71 at SP. He left the ropes behind and our sport was never the same.
Just a couple words from JB and for him, before I go:
"Climbing is a journey of devotion. The environment, by its severity, dictates movements of the spirit." - John Bachar
"You don't try, you just do" - John Bachar
"Empty mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return. Each being returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity. Not realizing the source, one stumbles in confusion and sorrow. When one realizes... tolerance, detachment, dignity and kindheartedness arise. Practicing the way, you are ready for whatever life brings." - Lao Tzu
"And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart; For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed. When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance."
-Kahlil Gibran
The Eagle
BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.
I spy a tiny hold
rest awaits
nothing but air below
my heart beats
I make the move
a smile takes over
I am consumed
joy again in this familiar moment
many don't understand why
I don't care
It's not to live or die
It's to live and dare
-Lee Jenkins
"Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that
the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforseen incedents and meetings and material assistance. which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.
-W. H. Murray
From Everest, the West Ridge, by Thomas Hornbein
"Death will be an awfully big adventure." - J.M. Barrie

RE: John Bachar, his memorial, and our future . . . Though I didn't know JB, we are the same vintage. I was in the little leagues on rock, always looking up to guys like the Stonemasters, and JB. I had my moments dancing with the gods, but I was just a mortal moving over stone, most of the time. I noticed as I read through the transcript of the memorial, someone played Amazing Grace on a sax. In my closing, did you know this hymn was penned by a pirate (arn't many climbers "pirates" in one form or another?), who "through many dangers, toils, and snares . . ." almost bit it many a time. Once he was drunk and disorderly aboard ship, and the captn' had him keel hauled (to be drung under the ship's keel for punishment while the vessel in under way). A rope broke, John Newton (author / pirate of AG) was floundering. The captn' had mercy on John, threw a harpoon through his leg, and hawled his ass aboard ship. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wreck like me . . . We have had our asses saved many a time on the rocks. Sooner or later grace will lead us home. DS

Lynne, a couple of IDs
To the left of Johnny in the shades is Steve Claussen of Wave Rave snowboard shop. Thanks for the feedback on the sound system. In the photo by the water, back row from right: three of my kids; Lydia, Sierra, & Ethan then Dave and Autumn Talski owners of Mammoth Mountaineering Supply. Autumn taught my kids and Tyrus at Mammoth Elementary School. Tyrus and Lydia were always competing in math. They were way ahead of the rest of the class. Lydia is also the girl down by the lake behind the saxist statue. She was born three months after Tyrus and they were very close. They used to talk about getting married. Val told me that Lydia was Tyrus' first kiss. I haven't asked Lydia about it yet.

Thanks all for contributing to this thread. It is warming to see the compassion we have for our fellow humans. Memorials remind us that we are, after all, closer than we think we are are.
John's presence was greater than merely physical, his actions defined a generation. By soloing and taking a stance on protection he was instrumental in keeping climbing close to the roots forged by the pioneers of the sandstone towers of the Elbe River. He made us understand that we could climb at a high level and do so in manner which respects the medium. This is what I'll always keep close and hope to share with the younger generation.
On the day of the memorial I was in the heart of the Teton Range. The afternoon storm came in early and with a fair amount of power. Rain preceded hail, lightening seconds before thunder with a sky that highlighted the sublime. The peaks reveal themselves in a different light after a storm. As the evening cooled the clouds gave way to a clear night. The following morning the upper mountain was coated in a translucent layer of verglas. It was a reminder that we are guests in the mountains and that they are much stronger than we will ever be. I guess it is from this strength of the mountains that we draw our own climbing energy. Special, this game we play.
Tyrus - you're a fine young man. I look forward to meeting you.
Thanks again.

Good words Conrad, we too had a special day of weather...double rainbows arcing into the sierra's, cleansing rain shower at the end of the day, white pelican flying overhead. These mountains are a special place and we do get a better appreciation of their beauty from the prospective we see them. It was all sunshine during the talks, a day we could not have planed with the best of intentions.

Driving alone for hours with so many thoughts .... so many mixed emotions....probably like everyone else headed to Mammoth to grieve and celebrate an incredible human, a friend and a man we will all miss more than can be expressed in words.
Hitting the East ..... where the hills and mountains appear from nowhere out of the barren flat lands. Actually at this point I cried and really disliked the rocks for claiming a friend that was woven into their lives as well as so many of our lives. John's impact on this planet, the rocks and we the people was huge and special.
Thinking as I drove...Beautiful as you are mountain, rock, sun, clouds and sky I dislike you intensely and won't be walking your hood ever again. Keep your rocks I can find life and pleasure elsewhere where the creation doesn't kill a friend and mentor.
Then Family and Friends surprised me by turning up and said, "Lets go climbing". Well, I wanted to tell them I hated the rock, but couldn't. Their enthusiasm was just to joyous and contagious. So off we went to Clarks Canyon out of Bishop....Men, women, children and dogs. :D
Off we go....cool place....me still fuming at the rock.

Largo and all my friends from the days of old... sorry for such a late response here, but I've been on the road for the past week and just returned. I know what your going through and feel for you, its not easy loosing someone this close, not now, not ever. I myself have been wandering around empty and hallow ever since I got news of this, and not being able to make it for the memorial made me feel even more at a loss. Regardless, it was great to see the pictures of all you guys at the memorial, it really made me feel homesick and realize how much I missed all you guys. I really wish I could have made it over for the memorial but I was locked into something I couldn't get out of, so the best I could do was be there in heart and spirit... Two Facelifts ago had Route 120 presented less of a challenge I might have had
a chance to talk to John.
But from my own experience and from what has been shared here we know
there was a day when young John was sitting on a rock banging his heels to
reduce the pain in his toes, entirely absorbed by the beauty of the blue sky and
by how life giving was each breath of cool fresh air. Facing the unknown
challenges above by his own choice, as he was, he would have known the
most incredible fact of all. That he and he alone would decide what was to be
done with his life.
He decided to become superb.
As indeed he was.
There is more.
His passing tells us something just as important as the realization he had those
many years ago. The shock felt everywhere tells us his most important work,
yet, lay in front of him.
And so it does for each of us.

Can hardly believe four years have passed. My friend and I are cleaning her house to some oldies, including a lot of old soul/R&B. I worked with John for a few years. A song came on that recalled a really fun memory. It's important to keep some of the fun times remembered, in memory of a person.
So, a bunch of us were at Outdoor Retailer (Boreal). It could have been the second night of the show. There was a bar/club that had a dance floor. We were all leaving to the next stop, when a James Brown tune came on: I Feel Good. John, who wasn't usually losing his cool in a situation like this, grabbed my arm with such force I nearly lost my footing.
He put on some James Brown dance moves with such expertise, you could only assume, they were practiced in his kitchen, when no one was watching. Being a huge fan myself, I could only marvel at his accuracy.
In a moment, he was clearly alone in his bliss. In his tan boots, his white-boy-long-blond-hair waved like Cornwallis' white flag - Ladies and gentlemen, the amazing John Bachar.
