Doesn't Deep Creek HS still have some kind of amoeba that can cause encephalitis? Keep your head above water...

As for the amoeba it is safer to assume it is
widely spread these days so don't dunk your head!

Being frustrated with a lack of good online map of CA hot springs, I threw this map together this afternoon.
Data is from NOAA NGDC and is circa 1980. I casually compared 2 springs I know on the east side, and looks like the USGS lat/long give a few hundred meter resolution. Not too bad I guess.
If anybody is interested in updating the data, or otherwise improving the map, let me know.

Reilly: Re-----your question about the little hot spring 30 minutes north of Sun Valley.
There is a small and luke-hot soak hole above an old Forest Service Guard-Station about 15 miles north of Ketchum/Sun Valley. It is a max two person spot. It gets a lot of local traffic. Nearby & developed: Easley Hot Springs is a nice stop in the summer.
One winter in the late 70's, a buddy and I skied into Easley stoned, on a dark & moonless night. We figured there was a caretaker around, so we were real sneaky.
We smoked a little more when we got to the concrete pool, and jumped in.
After a while paddling around in the dark, I encountered something floating-----large, slimy, & alive. Pushed it away and tried to ignore it. We finally figured out a large toad had been paddling around the pool for the winter.

Hot Springs Honeymoon.
When Heidi & I “got-hitched” in 1988, we had a two-part honeymoon.
My part was a horse supported camp-out in Idaho’s Frank Church Wilderness, at my favorite Hot Springs.
Her part was a road-trip to Alberta & the Canadian Rockies.
We had a horse-packer take in folding chairs, goodies, & ice to the remote Idaho hot springs, and we settled in for 5 days of fishing, hiking, and hot spring fun.
After two-days, Heidi started working on a new soaking place, where very hot water tumbled off a cliff into the cold stream water. She moved a ton or so of rock while I went fishing for most of a day, and then the next day, I helped her move another ton or so.
We ended up with a very-pleasant soaking spot, with just a few “hot & cold running surprises.”
I was pretty happy with our labors, since I could even soak & fish at the same time.
It was our creation, and we never thought about it being invaded & exploited.
The following spring, we were both doing product clinics in an outdoor store in Boise, and while Heidi talked about the merits of her footwear line, I browsed their selection of new outdoor books.
I discovered a new book on hot springs of the Northwest, and decided to see what they listed for Idaho hot springs.
Suddenly, I nearly choked.
There was a photo of our newly- created soaking pool and a glowing description praising it as one of the best in the state.
I then did a double-take of the book’s cover, and our creation was the cover-photo.
I’ve trudged back into the area a few more times in the years since, and have been wounded at how many people have visited, and trashed the place.
Scummy tarps, trash, bars of soap, and new trails have degraded the pristine wilderness.
I hate us!
The only real joy in visiting: is in noting our soaking pool is gone.
We created it in late August of a low-water year, and the people writing the book must have stumbled on it soon thereafter.
The pool is submerged in cold-creek water in any normal year.

This was not a small lukewarm two person hole. It was a large backyard

Reilly: Sounds like it is the one by Obsidian, near the headwaters of the Salmon River. It is certainly on a ranch. Last time I was there, in the early 70's, it was a very large stock tank. I heard the property had been improved, and made private.
It would have a great view of the East side of the Sawtooths.
Here's a picture (I think) of it back in the mid-70's that I found on the Wilderness Ventures website.

Yeah, that looks like it! On the map there is a hot spring at Warm Creek
about 6 miles south of Obsidian but that is too far off of 75. As I recall
it was only a mile or so east of 75. At 3AM I was lying awake and the
name Polecat Creek came to me but that one is in WY. Interestingly there
is a Pole Creek just south of the above Warm Creek. The views were great
except the last time when it was snowing and all we could see were the
cows coming up to hang out with us. :-)

It has been off limits to the public since Carole King bought it about 1980.
The winter of 1970, my climbing buddy Harry was the caretaker at Robinson Bar. I skied in a couple miles in early March to see how Harry was doing. He was a little crazed from being alone all winter, but perked right up when the drugs came out.
The ranch had been a stage station and hot springs resort starting in the early 1880's and the main log cabin was a maze of corridors & small rooms. Two concrete soaking pools were "the bomb!"
It doesn't seem to have changed a lot externally, but Carol has fixed it up inside----real nice.
Oh!
The price you ask?
There's a lot more than a hot springs.
It has 128 acres and is surrounded by National Forest land.
There are several cabins in addition to the original 7,000 Sq. Ft. lodge.
The property also blocks public access to what has become a private creek & trail that leads into the White Cloud Mountains.
And a recording studio too!
Its been on the market for a while, and has been marked way down.
Really a bargain!

i KEEP seeing stuff similar, supposedly??? in the same area...
not sure if there is only one, in the area, or if there is more...
does anyone have a picture of the whole area, with a wider vew?
also--jody's pic is very much the same, but from a view that shows the
mountains, and perhaps is from the other side-or-back, angle of
THIS pool...
thanks for the info, and name and more ABOUT it...
i never know which thing i am reading on line, when i try to find it,
as there is NO picture like this pool SHOWN...
also, where does the pipe lead to, and does i always remain
as 'filling' or what???

That is Shepard hot spring in Long Valley CA . The g/f and I were there over Christmas break , mid week , dusk , 2 feet of snow on the ground , and were surprised to still find people soaking in it . Pretty popular tub ...
... So many nice springs in that area .

Thought I had better mention that The Robinson Bar Ranch in Idaho is still up for sale. Details are in the last few posts on this thread.
I did forget to mention that it sets about 1/2 mile from a Class III section of the Salmon River, with a Class IV section, upstream about 3-6 miles.
It is about 15 miles from the Sawtooth Mountains, and 75 miles from Sun Valley.
Great site for the "Old Climber's Home."

I'm willing to make the sacrifice, and manage it for you folks.

Just an opinion here ... But I always felt it was bad form to camp out right next to a tub and monopolize it , maybe if you are at a super remote , low use tub , but that guy has his camper literally on top of one of the most popular tubs on the east side ...
... Maybe it was long ago when those tubs weren't as popular , who knows .

I was just gunna say the same thing, making camp next to a tub is super bad form. Besides, that is LADWP land, NO CAMPING. They do not HAVE to let folks on their land. Access issues have been dicey for a long time at those tubs.(Same issue along the Buttermilk Rd.)
Oh, if you have ever camped next to a tub and had someone blast their car horn as they cruise by? That might have been me.

whoa, hoss. LADWP is a branch of the government of the city of los angeles, a public entity which is governed by an elected city council and mayor which appoints a public utilities commission.
los angeles grabbed a lot of land outside of its municipal boundaries quite awhile back so's it could bring water down here and "grow". that in itself has some pretty questionable legal basis. LADWP land is not "their" land. it's public land, and administration of it is a matter of public policy, not something "private".
why los angeles has to mucker about the hot springs in long valley when all it's doing is drawing snowmelt for drinking water ought to be a matter of some concern to all of us. environmental and land use issues here ought to be primarily the concern of the state of california, not a local water and power provider one step removed from public accountability.

Tony, hate to pick nits with ya, but that land is indeed privately owned by the city of Los Angles. Now what they do with it might be subject to public policy, and how they got it was unquestionably underhanded, and illegal, but it is theirs. Totally intermingled with BLM and FS lands too.
And really, in hindsight, aren't we glad? Otherwise, a huge chunk of the Eastern Sierra would be developed like in other resort corridors. (Shudder)
Way back at the beginning of this thread, someone posted a picture of a semi-developed looking hot springs in winter, is that the one at Steamboat?

There was one on the third page that nobody identified. It's on the ET highway in NV. Old abandoned hot spring resort. Worth a stop.

Tony, don't be disingenuous. You know better.
If someone gets hurt on land, who do they sue? The landowner. If they get ill from soaking in the water in a hot spring, who do they sue, the landowner.
That's us.
The easiest and most responsible way for LADWP to protect us Angelinos from such suits, is to block access, which they have the legal right to do.
They have not done that, because they feel a responsibilitiy to continue to allow access to public lands, and consider the risk low.
But idiots getting in their face could probably change that.

don't be disingenuous yourself, ken. these springs have been soaked in year-round since tonto and the lone ranger took breaks from filming at lone pine. the government has special immunities to all kinds of frivolous lawsuits. you yourself ought to know better. the city of los angeles fretted and stammered like that before we got them to adopt stoney point.

On our Middle Fork Salmon 7 night, 8 day adventure, last summer, we were easily able to secure the "un-loved" Whitie Cox Hot Springs camp for one night.
I like the hot spring! In spite of the shallow muddy-bottom, and a fringe of poison-ivy (poison-oak for you Calis), and a plenitude of nasty biting red spider mites, and also, a general lack of ambiance.
(maybe that's why I like it: it keeps the casual tourist out!)
Named for early 1950's prospector, Whitie Cox, who dug a little too deep, while seaching for gold. His gold burrow caved in on him, and he was buried on the terrace above his burrow, near the hot spring.
After I led most of our party up to the hot springs and explained how wonderful it was, everyone declined.
I sneaked up later, and had a wonderful, but short soak. I did need to depart, before the biting "red-spider mites" found me out.

and i don't mind adding, ken, in case you haven't noticed, that we're getting a whole lot of prissy excuses from our dear governments to deny public access which has long been traditional. it's why we're not climbing at williamson rock any more. last year, i got a ticket, since thrown out of court, for driving on two inches of snow, most of which had been melted by traffic anyway. "hazardous winter conditions." i hope all the east siders on this thread take note of that.

Hot spring at Hveravellir, Iceland, in the Sprengisandur highland between the Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers.
http://tripandtravelblog.com/the-best-hot-spring-spa-breaks-in-the-world/
This is an interesting hot spring in northern Iceland, near Myvatn. It is in a cave.
The hot spring is actually in a huge vertical crack in the lava at the bottom of a cave. The crack filled with ground water. Of course, with all of the active volcanic activity the water is about 102 degrees. This pool is about 15 feet deep, and the crack runs for about 50-100 feet.

Dan, How did you get a car into Carson River hot springs. I know there is a road with a lock gate on the south side of the river. I have seen on google earth what looks like a ranch road coming in from the north. A friend of mine had a student from Markleeville that said they used to hike in from the air strip. Looks fun!

You take Leviathan Mine Rd. from Hwy. 395 .
From that road you get on a Forest service road . All total it is about 8 miles from 395 . Pretty easy to find . You probably want a 4x4 on that road , and definitely need it in the winter .... Or just wait until summer and float down the Carson river like most folks do .
All the info is in that 'Hot Springs of CA and NV' book ...
