I'd just like to report that I nobly refrained yesterday from starting a "Six Months Before the Start of the 2009 Yosemite FaceLift" thread, thus saving thread clutter, bandwidth, hissy fits, vexation on the part of those who may be less public spirited, and any need to later delete it. It seemed very important that I report this non-event to the wonderful wacky world of SuperTopia.
It is, of course, six months less one day to the official start of the 2009 FaceLift, on September 23rd. As in the last few years, a very good time will be had by all, many SuperTopians will attend, and much do-gooder stuff will be done. In the time between now and when this thread is deleted, you can read about the 2008 FaceLift at http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/category/events/facelift/facelift-2008, plus there are quite a lot of threads and photos about it which can be found on SuperTopo.

Good point, blue. If he doesn't post it, how are people going to know that it's six months until the next Facelift, so that they can plan to be there on Sept 23 and following? Mighty Hiker obviously didn't think this thing through very carefully.

I was just trying to get in on the recent spate of thread non-deletions, or non-thread deletions, or deleted non-threads, or whatever it's all about. As usual with such trends, I'm probably behind the curve.
Plus I'm hoping to avoid having my eye sockets gouged out.

Seems almost a conspiracy when most of the cleaning up is in the valley.
Is it 4 million+ visitors a year now? And the Early morning garbage trucks run 7 days a week just to keep up?
/Maybe need to add a Spring Face lift to?

Open Crane Flats for the insomniacs. Leave the normal campground to those of us that go to bed early (or at least go to bed at all).
I don't want to go to Crane Flats! It's pretty, but dang, it's way out there.

It's really up to Ken and the YCA, and what works best in terms of getting people to the Valley to help at the FaceLift, and have fun. We have to help however we can - the FaceLift is a place and time where responsible behaviour needs to be encouraged wherever we are and whatever we do.
Yellow Pines is a great spot for a group, with perhaps a bit more flexibility than other sites. It's a privilege to stay at YP, but is a place that we share, and is in the Valley. It may be that it would be best for all if those who want to stay up late and make noise camp somewhere a bit more out of the way. We could visit them each morning with coffee, and perhaps a modest trumpet or drum solo to get them moving.
ps Camp 4 usually settles down by about midnight. Not always - the rangers seem to have to visit about one night a week.

Really, I helped, I was responsible. I noted that when Casey and Papajoto called it a night it was good for me too also. They were always first ones up and going climbing....as well as fishfinder. 19 pitches on the West Face of El Cap. They missed the big party...but bet their memories are better.
I love YP cause the great beach and also bike access to the Village. What else can I say. I plead my case and rest on the mercy of the court. :D Peace Always, Lynne

Crane flat would give us an excellent shot at clean up on Route 120. We could be moving at dawn.
Need to travel in pairs though. Mountain lions. We were being stalked there last year.

Andy sure had a great mixed bag of tunes.
Maybe we need armed guards at YP . Or a check in . The host shouldnt have to be responsible for us.
It really doesnt matter where we are . We are there to clean the place up.
I was surprised that some treated the mission as secondary .
Ken runs around like a madman all week , and puts in way more time than anyone.
He really takes care of everyone, getting great sponsers, booking talent, bringing firewood, getting shower passes , etc. etc.
We need to unite as a more solid group to support him.
Thanks Ken for creating some unforgettable moments .

The day before Jingy and I were working that area getting pretty tired I must admit. The cats tend to go for animals that seem in distress. The next day a park person drove me back to get the bags and we ran into another couple picking them up. The guy blurted out suddenly, "What's that?! I saw something up on the bank! The fellow who drove me up there said, "Yes. We know there are mountain lions living up here on this ridge. You folks had best travel close together."

It would certainly add class to the event if jstan were to serendade us every morning with a bagpipe solo. Reveille, if you like.
Although knowing jstan, if we camp at Crane Flat, he'll be up and gone by daybreak, foraging for treasures. He's not the meatiest of persons, and especially if he's sushi-free, should be safe from cougars and such. The bagpipes will give them fair warning, too.
Anyway, as fish finder mentioned, our main job is to be there and to help, and also have fun. Ken is thorough about planning, and no doubt he and the NPS are working out something that's practicable. I'd guess, though, that if some or all of us are in YP, we'll have to be much more diligent about managing ourselves. (Crane Flat, too - although there may be fewer other campers there.) That's our job - not Ken's, or the NPS'. We need to ensure that we're responsible and pro-active about the campsite and what we do there, and considerate of others. If that means that some then have to behave differently, or decide it's not their cup of tea, so be it.
Wherever we are, if we're in a group campsite, it seems a reasonably safe guess that we'll have to be more attentive about registration, site management (noise, garbage, parking, curfew, etc), and generally self-policing.
Doug (nature) has nobly done sushi for both of the last two FaceLifts, a truly magnificent effort. It really does add a special aura for the event. However, he's going to give it a pass this year - it's a huge effort, and he's now living farther away, takes more time. So if we're doing group camping, we may have to do potlucks or BBQs.

What a difference 6 months make. Thanks to yo all I can now put up a tent, I know that cots are prehistoric, I have thoroughly enducated myself about coolers and bears and trash.

If you're suggesting segregating 'noisy' people into other sites subject to the same rules because you wanna crash early, I'm out!!! (no big loss, I know).
The nights we were awake till 2am weren't that noisy, in fact, the Wells Fargo idiots prolly couldn't even hear us.
I attend the event to hang with friends and have a good time, not to pick up garbage! I consider the work a price to pay for Ken's hospitality.
That makes me one of the few I suppose that are willing to say they show up for the fun, not the diaper grabbing.
If I'm going to be told when to go to bed and be quiet, well, I'll f*#king go somewhere else. Have fun.

hey that pic is from before the ranger man was involved...no one was around for the first half of the week to bother, except the 500 people at the california corps or whoever the hell they were with the insane party earlier - i *highly* doubt you all were anywhere's near as loud, but i left early, remember ?
staying there is a privilege for this week. I defer any and all noise and party concerns to helping Ken. If there was an issue last time, we need to *not have that happen this time* - it is that simple...
and somebody needs to get 500 copies of "everybody poops" and brand it as the special yosemite edition - we can hand them out to tourists at the bus stops ;-)

The Large Loud group of CCC'ers were also out of bounds camping at the day use area. They had food and ice chests out and open on the picknic tables. Funny how ...just saying.
ps.. and yes, we can do better at the next facelift. I personally enjoy Volunteering and giving back .

I'm sure we can figure these things out, but do need to talk about them beforehand. It will help us all, especially Ken.
I was in Camp 4 last year, and so missed whatever did happen in Yellow Pines. As officialdom seems concerned, we need to consider why, and what we might do to avoid a recurrence. Simple preventive stuff.
Ricky D's menu has a lot of promise, at least for the carnivores. I wonder how he wants us to cook #46?

Study Links Red Meat With Higher Mortality Rates

A large study of older Americans between the ages of 50 and 71 years old suggests eating red and processed meats daily slightly increases the risk of death from heart disease and cancer.
The researchers surveyed more than 500,000 people in the United States participating in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study. Meat intake was determined by a questionnaire the participants filled out when the study began in 1995.
The researchers from the National Cancer Institute said that participants who had higher daily intakes of beef and pork had a slightly higher risk of death from cancer and heart disease than those with higher intakes of poultry and fish.
One of the authors of the study, Dr. Rashmi Sinha, told the Australian Broadcasting Company that he and his colleagues aren't sure what the link is between red meat consumption and mortality, but he theorized it could be related to iron levels.
Despite the findings, the researchers said they were not prepared to issue recommendations of switching to a vegetarian diet.

Hate to say it, but the ranger interaction last year had more to do with belligerence than noise. Wells Fargo's party was one thousand times louder than the Facelift. Someone was rude with a ranger, they pow wowed and then came in full tool force the next day. More care with bear boxes was the issue with our camp (while overlooking the camp situation at Wells Fargo camp). It was a combo of being tooled and a poor response on a couple folks part in our camp. I don't know of a solution, but I picked up trash the past two years, and if I have to be on my best behavior at night it doesn't sound too appealing. Maybe we can have a separate camp for those of us that want to have a good time maybe central valley somewhere, and one for those that have to get to bed by 7:30. See U there Bluey!

First of all, we will have a Facelift this year and it is being planned right now. It has turned out to be a great event and I want to thank everyone for making it so. I have had the opportunity to meet so many great people doing this and you all are awesome!
I never thought it would get so big! I started this thing for two reasons. One was to clean up the Park as I felt it was being taken for granted and was being abused. I have received feedback from regular visitors and seen it for myself, the Park is getting cleaner. The other reason was to improve climber relations and climber reputations amongst NPS, DNC, Park visitors and others. For years we have had a bad rap some of it justified but a lot of it not. This reputation has changed and I hope we can continue to improve it. At a meeting the other day, the Chief Ranger attributed the Facelift to partially lowering arrests from 900+ a year to 250+ a year. So, the Facelift is working!
NPS is and has been very supportive. They offer logistic support, free entrance to the park and free camping. They like it.
I am sure that every successful event organizer has had its share of problems and I am sure mine are nothing compared to others. There were some that bothered me last year. It only takes a few people to people to reflect on a lot of others.
A huge CCC group stayed in Yellow Pines at the start of the Facelift last year and they were noisy. They were there at the request of our Governor and perhaps had special treatment and I know many of you that were there that first night had to help clean up afterwards. They were noisy, had fun and enjoyed themselves just like we did, I can’t blame them. Unfortunately it alerted NPS to the normally quiet Yellow Pines and brought scrutiny on the rest of the Facelift.
During one of the evening programs, many cases of the wine I had donated by a sponsor and the banners I had made up were stolen. The wine I replaced by buying more but it did put my sponsor representative on the spot with his employer. The banners will have to be replaced for this year and it is not the money but the fact it is hard to find a manufacturer that can do a good job on our logo.
The thing that bothered me the most is that on Friday night when our reserved sites were full, some people who pretended to be associated with the Facelift were looking for free camping and finding our sites full ran into the Wells Fargo campers further in who had reserved their site for volunteer work too. The Wells Fargo people offered them a place to stay for the night. These people stayed up extremely late keeping the Fargo people up later than they wanted. The next night the Wells Fargo people asked them to leave and camp somewhere else. They left, but not before breaking off the hood ornaments and antennas of the Wells Fargo people’s cars. That was very hard for me to deal with last year and was extremely embarrassing for me.
I am committed to keep this thing going and the NPS is too. I am going to make some adjustments to alleviate possible problems. I am going to spread out the camping. Tamarack Flat is available for the late night people. Music can be played, have fun and no one will be bothered. Crane Flat site is available though there will be other campers. Yellow Pines is available for 50 people and consideration for others should be observed. I will elect our own Campground Hosts to help make sure things go smoothly. Of course some Camp 4 sites are available too.
Please respect the Park, the wildlife and other visitors. Let’s have fun and do the Park some good.

Wow... I didn't realize a lot of those things happened last year. That's not right.
I'm going to miss being there. It's a privilege and wish I could make it.
It's just on so many different levels it doesn't work out for me to do it. It's a sacrifice I can't make this year (I took 7 days vacation time to be there last year - I have none to take at this point but there's more to the story....). Maybe next year?

in the middle of the woods , in the middle of the Valley was a rare treat!
It also didnt hurt to also be fully lit.
Mr E brought the Silver Patron , Radical (where has that guy been?) brought the Mandarin Absolut , Fattrad brought some good wines I was sporting JW Pure Malt and there was just to much to mention. BUZZZZZZZZ

Thanks, Ken! That's a pretty clear report, and should help people with planning.
Assuming that it's reasonably quiet, at least during 'official' quiet hours, I'd like to stay at Yellow Pines this year. (It can't be any noisier than Camp 4.) It would be a nice change. As with the last two years, I can arrive a few days ahead, to help with whatever you need help with. (Keeping jstan away from his litter stick until the official start, maybe...he's always champing at the bit.) I was thinking of arriving on the Sunday before, the 20th.
Of course, I'm willing to help in any way that would be useful. I can even do litter stick repair and maintenance. Possibly Ed will trust me to keep the projector centred on the screen. Whatever.

Wow. Real bummer about stuff that happened last year, Ken. It only takes a few to f*#k it up for everyone else. Hopefully those few can't make it this year.
I heard similar (but much worse) things are what changed the RRR this year. No one, not even those of us involved with teaching the clinics, were allowed to camp at the actual event location this year. Sad. It pretty much sucked, for everyone, to have to camp in the middle of a dust storm, thanks to some as#@&%es from last year.

Tamarack is out in the boonies. I can get the whole 50 + site Campground. I got it for overflow and because no one will bother anyone out there as long as we don't leave food and garbage out. It makes sense to have a supply station there and to focus on roadways as it is central for three of them. Still working out the details.

We plan on being there this year as well. However, we won't be able to stay as long and will probably have to fly in and rent a car due to work. BLECK! Our hope is to stay at Yellow Pines.

I nominate EKat to be camp host/den mother at Yellow Pines. Cookies. Campfire. Marshmallows, maybe with graham crackers and chocolate. Nature walks, combined with a bit of garbage pickup. Story time.
I'm only partly joking. There will be a number of children at the FaceLift, plus some adults who prefer a quieter environment. Yellow Pines could be the "family" site, Tamarack Flats the "PG-13" site. That wouldn't mean that all would be boring at YP, or that TF would be out of control. (Both will have hosts, and we have to watch our Ps and Qs.) We can probably fill up both sites, and visit back and forth. For example, if we have a BBQ one night, it can be at YP, as everyone will be in the Valley at the end of the day. Then maybe there'd be an evening event at TF one night.
We should limit the number of evening events, though - Ken puts in a lot of work to locate speakers, prizes, food and drink for the events at the Visitor Centre, and we don't want to distract people from that. Maybe a BBQ at YP on the Tuesday night before the FaceLift officially starts, and then something at TF later in the week?

For what it's worth I vote against Tamarack. My grandkids were in Yellow Pine along with Peter's small son Finn. They just set up tent away from the campfire on the far side. I like to enjoy both Family and my ST Friends. :D I don't think life can get much better than singing and playing music around a campfire.
Remember Jillie and Cowboy Jake started the evenings with the kids songs and the kiddos singing ? That too was so much Fun !
