The Initial Entry Team arrived. From left to right:
Ivan, Geno, Rich P, Rosie, Claire, Mike, Laura.
The weather has been perfect for climbing. Golden October days, one after the other. Forecast is good for the next few days.
Everyone is climbing pretty well. Ivan is especially fit and leading hard.
Richie broke his hand a month ago though.
But he's still hitting the slopers.
We are impatiently awaiting the arrival of Bobby D...and the rest of the gang.

We climbed at McCarthy Wall today. Lynn and Owen Hill arrived. Owen is reveling us with his pendulum antics:
Lynn and Laura happy to be together:
Rosie Andrews as fit as ever:
David Feinberg with Romano's Royal Crown chalk bag:
Romano and Feinberg had an epic on Three Pines and somehow Rich's cherished Wob Wobs (Clog versions of Hexs) went into an oak tree. Richie beginning the ascent to retrieve his gear:
A shot from Something Interesting of Romano further up.
Richie about 50 feet up. The Wob Wobs are another 12 feet above him.
The irreplaceable Wob Wobs finally back in their owner's hands.
An end of the day shot of Ivan, Russ Raffa, Rick Cronk, and Geno.
Tonight Bobby D arrives at LaGuardia at 4 p.m. Harvey Arnold is driving his porshe from Nederland and will be here by midday. The Rosenfelds and Robinsons arrive today also. We are all very excited.

80 friends gathered for the Dinner at the Mountain Brauhaus on Thursday evening.
Here are a few photos in which everyone is obviously enjoying themselves:
Hardy Truesdale, Andrew Kaplan, Sarah and Chris Archer, and Steve Amter.
Jim Donini, Steve Wunsch and Bobby D.
Marcia Wunsch, Laura Smith and Lynn Hill.
John Sherman and Steve Grossman. Steve and Mimi came from Seattle and captured several events on film.
This is a shot of Nelson Bennet; he is famous for his service in WWII in the 10th Mountain Division and for his unrivaled expertise in coaching, course setting and other contributions to the sport of skiing. He attended with Madie Kraus who is in the next photo.
Rich Perch and Madie Kraus. Madie was married to Hans Kraus and was an Olympic Silver Medalist in Skiing.
Mohonk Ranger Bob Elsinger, Iza and Ned "Coach" Crossley.
Jean and David Rosenfeld.
Patty Matison with Barbara Devine and her beautiful daughter.
Rosie Andrews and Chris Archer.

Finally a shot of a few of the Vugarians who attended: Dick Williams, Burt Angrist, Jim McCarthy.
I am sure Bobby D and others who took pictures will post them up to record this great social event.

The Mohonk Preserve hosted a party at their headquarters on Sat. night for about 200 of us. Really fun and inspiring to hear Macarthy, Dinini, and D'Antonio describe the importance and beauty of the Gunks and its climbing heritage. Many people were there not yet shown in the pics. Anyone ready to show them? DuMais, Eastman, Brosnan, Liff, Pearl, Monz, Lanzetta!!, Mike Freeman, all missing from the gathering. Maybe next year?? Scheuer would have a blast.

Listening to some of you all at the Friday night event at R&S was really great. I can't remember, was it Rich Goldstone? - who talked about the Gunks always having been about the fun and camaraderie - was especially nice. That's what I have always felt, and sometimes I get heat on some of the climbing forums(like rc.com....) for focusing on that more than pushing grades. It's nice to know that I simply have been a product of my environment. And thank god for that! What fun would climbing BE without the FUN!!!???
Seeing so many of you guys out and about at the cliffs was cool too. Thanks to all the Reunionizers for making the weekend a wonderful one!

As PM reported above, there was an incredible Reunion 2008 gathering at the Mohonk Preserve on Saturday Evening 18 October. Three generations of climbers were well represented.
Glen Hoagland, Director of the Mohonk Preserve; Hank Alicandra, Lead Ranger and all the Mohonk Preserve personnel were extremely hospitable and supportive of Reunion 2008. Here's a Rick Cronk photo of Glen Hoagland speaking to the crowd:
Bobby D'Antonio was outstanding as the Master of Ceremonies. He told the group about his first experience in the Gunks when he met a waiter at a local restaurant named Kevin Bein who took him out climbing. Bobby concluded by saying these words:
"This reunion is important. We are all here today together. Who knows what tomorrow will bring."
Here's Bobby D speaking:
Jim McCarthy said a few words about Fritz Weisner, Hans Kraus and the first generation of Gunks climbers. Rick Cronk took this photo:
Jim Donini, Current President of the American Alpine Club thanked the Mohonk Preserve for their leadership in being such good stewards of the Shawangunk range and treating climbers with respect and understanding. Jim also described the new American Alipine Club Campground and what a benefit it will be for all climbers. Rick Cronk took this photo of Jim:
Henry Barber gave a meaningful and eloquent keynote address that tied the whole Gunks Reunion together. Henry was very complimentary to those climbers who preceeded as well as followed him. Henry saluted the traditional climbing ethic that is followed so fervently in the Gunks, as well as the sense of community, as being unique. He felt that the Shawangunks, and the people who climb there, inspired him to excell in climbing areas around the world.
Henry Barber speaking:
These are just a few attendees.
Steve Wunsch, John Bragg and Rich Perch
Claude Suhl, one of the original Vulgarians, and Rich Ross.
Jordan Mills with the 4th and future generation.

I just spoke with Laura and Geno and I just have to say thanks again for supporting such a wonderful gathering! While others have contributed to the events, such as Rich Gottlieb and Rick Cronk, Team Smith was at the center making sure that all went well and that everyone felt welcome and included. Being a lover of the Gunks was enough to be part of the family, as Bob D put it so well, and without the drama and horse shizzle.
Kevin will always be the mayor but Geno and Laura are the Duke and Duchess of Shawangunk, the fairy tale land of roofs and buckets. It was a real pleasure to visit, walk the carriage road again and climb on the castle walls.

Steve,
Thank you for the nice words but it's easy to get a bunch of people together drawn by the force of love and friendship and a long history of adventure. Other then maintaining a couple of spreadsheets, I didn’t do much, or at least not more then Rick Cronk who infused the planning and execution of both the 2007 and 2008 Reunions with his enthusiam, creativity and intense love of his friends and the Gunks.
Also, I was in constant contact with Jim McCarthy, Russ Clune, Joe Bridges, Burt and Anka Angrist, Bob DiAntonio, Elaine Mathews, Patty Matteson and Hank Alicandri throughout the year. This group provided consensus and great support.
In addtion, Rich Gottlieb/Rock and Snow was very supportive and hosted the Vulgarian panel: an unforgetable evening of old stories, legendary climbing feats and enduring friendships.
Steve, we all look forward to you and Mimi returning to the Gunks soon and don’t be surprized if a bunch of us show up one day at your doorstep. A Seattle trip is definitely in the planning!

I had the great fortune of learning to climb in Tucson in a very close knit and loving community. Looking back, I value that time immensely and deeply miss the comraderie and sense of belonging that a caring group of friends can create. The Gunks crowd, and I hardly had the opportunity to meet everyone, has that same warm and wondrous caring magic about it, not to be taken for granted but rather absorbed like the sunshine on a cool fall morning. I am still glowing as I write these words.
To any of you fabulous Gunkies, my home is open to you should you come out to Seattle. While the climbing pales a bit, there is lots of fun to be had in my fair city. Come August or September when most of the country is sweltering, it is glorious up here and we have plenty to explore.
A pub crawl in Drizzletown is a Grade VII undertaking with the Jolly Roger Taproom at the peak. So, whether it's tieing one in or tieing one on, come on out and stay a while. Mimi and I and our five cats welcome you at a moment's notice. Our old Victorian house has long been under construction but should be around the bend by next summer. Come on out and visit, we will show you a good time!
Cheers-Steve

Rich Ross,
Thanks for getting into the swing of posting photos on ST. Your pics are all great. I love your photo of the sports car in front of the Brauhaus. The sound of cars and motorcycles on the hair pin curve is a part of the Gunks experience. Keep posting.
Do you have any more photos of the Vulgarian Panel on Friday? No one else has put up anything on that event.

I just checked my footage and everything seems in order so the plan is to put out a DVD of the Rock and Snow event and talk at the Mohonk Visitor Center the following night. It will be available through Rock and Snow with the proceeds to help replace the stolen rescue equipment that some thoughtless fools pinched recently. I will let people know when the DVD is available directly so please have patience and don't pester Rich about it.
To the thieves: for taking advantage of the trust of the Shawangunks climbing community and the Mohonk Preserve, that gear is cursed in your hands, so return it. Otherwise, may your spirits whither and die in a thousand ways. Simply walk up there some night and put it back in the boxes. We all make mistakes. This one is unforgivable.

The line of Directissima, when viewed from the proper vantage point at Storm King Mountain, has but the slightest leftward jot, hardly more than a molecular misalignment, a lilliputian leap, a subatomic crab crawl.
If Emilio took a whiz at the top of this climb, you can be sure the line itself would be etched in stone by Comician uric acid, at least if there were a good strong gust midway.

To Geno. Steve W. was on the first pitch of Fillapina. Just to repeat what others have said, it was a truely memorable weekend. It was great to see--and climb with--friends I haven't seen in 20, 30 years. I've never been one for typical school reunions, but my joy at this one just underlines that my real "school" was climbing, and particularly the Gunks. My one regret for the weekend is that because I only got "permission" to go (I'd just got back from a 2-week trip) at the last minute, I neglected to bring a camera----so keep the pictures coming!!!!!

Fun beyond comprehension! The classic Yellow Ridge at Near Trapps.
And Roseland, what a pumper! Was so psyched to do this with no falls. The 5.9s are so solid here. Real 5.9, with a season's worth of shoe grease on every tiny foothold on the roof traverse. Al Rubin, TRing the 5.0 to the right, soon caught up and under his watchful eye, I was able to focus on the strenuous traversing finish to the anchor. Yeehaw!

Hey Folks,
I had planned to do a historical NACHA Festival in the Gunks this year but it is going to have to be 2016. Too much else going on right now for me to devote the necessary time.
Please coordinate any planned gathering with me before tossing out dates if you would be so kind.
October is the best time for everyone generally and you really can't have a Gunks reunion elsewhere IMO.
Cheers,
