Hello Everybody,
Just when I think I am getting a break I realize that it is coming up quickly. This how it stands right now.
CAMPING:
Yellow Pines is full on the 26th and 27th. I do have space available there from the 22nd - 25th. There is some camping left in Camp 4 from the 24th - 28th. I might still be able to get some in Crane Flat and in Group Camp across the creek from North Pines. You need to contact me soon if you want camping. I sign people up in the order that I receive emails(Yager@inreach.com).I am still waiting to hear back from 3 large groups and that may take up most of the camping. I need names, which nights and campground preference. Fortunately, many of you can fend on your own.
SIGNING UP AND SCHEDULE:
We will have a booth set up in front of the Visitor Center from 8:00 - 5:00 everyday from the 24th-28th. At this booth people will sign up and be given bags, litter sticks and gloves. We like to keep track of areas being cleaned so that people are not in the same area. Trash needs to be returned to the booth before 5:00. I will have a daily raffle for the participants at the booth at 5:00. There will be evening programs (movies and guest speakers) from 7:00 - 9:00 on the nights of the 24th - 27th. On the evening of the 28th there will be a celebration with free food, free beer and wine, large raffle and live music from 6:00 - midnight. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SIGN UP. It helps us document the volunteer hours and keep track of areas cleaned.
NIGHTLY PROGRAMS: This is not final.
Wednesday 9/24 7:00-9:00 at Yosemite Lodge Amphitheater - To be announced.
Thursday 9/25 7:00-9:00 at Yosemite Lodge Amphitheater - Reel Rock Film Tour
Friday 9/26 7:00 - 9:00 at the East Auditorium - Tim O'Neil? He hasn't committed yet and it could change.
Saturday 9/27 7:00 - 9:00 at the East Auditorium - I am thinking of showing the obscure Werner Herzog movie Scream of Stone. This could change.
Sunday 9/28 6:00 - Midnight at the East Auditorium - Celebration with music by Jonathan McEuen.
It is amazing how many have contacted me without any real promotion yet.
Thank you,
Ken
P.S. I believe Nature will be doing a Sushifest to start it off in Yellow Pines on Tuesday but, that is up to him. Doug?

Ken,
Per some odd but heart-warming requests, I was thinking of making and bringing 2 or 3 Train Wreck Jell-o Cakes for one of the sushifest evenings. Is there any way I can steal some fridge space somewhere, hopefully just for the evening of the 24th?

Laura, the trainwreck jello cake may be more useful on the Tuesday night, the 23rd.
Perhaps nature can elucidate for us his plans for a SushiFest at the FaceLift? Last year we had it the night BEFORE the FaceLift officially started. On the Tuesday night. That gave us much more time to have fun, plus got a lot into position for the FaceLiftOff on Wednesday morning. (Canuck joke.)
There were subsidiary SushiFests the next few nights, but nothing like as large - most people were elsewhere.
See the schedule Ken posted above, and the discussion on the other thread. The FaceLift starts on Wednesday the 24th, and goes through Sunday the 28th. There's things to do all day, every day - clean up during the day time, then various evening speakers and social events. I found there was usually just enough time to get washed up in late afternoon, grab a bite, then head back.

SushiFest Plans are the same as last year and as follows:
Tuesday 23rd - $30/person
Thursday 25th - $30/person
Saturday 27th - donations
Correcting Anders just a bit.... Thursday of last year was pretty much just as huge as Tuesday. We started a little later on Thursday because of one of the shows. But people started catching wind of the whole thing so lot's of people were there. Heck, it might have been bigger but I was so drunk Tuesday that entire night remains a blur.
Sushi on the 27th won't be as fancy as I will probably be out of fish from Hawaii. Last year I put out a tip jar and donated half the funds to YCA. This year I'll donate the whole thing.
Also, last year we had a poor showing in the mornings for coffee and breakfast. This year will be different. I still need to get with Tim-the-pancake-man to figure out his plans but I'd like to see us do breakfast every morning in hopes of getting the trash-picker-uperers out of camp on a full belly.
I'm now armed (thanks to the sushifest slush fund and the PMB) with coffee making equipment for the masses.
Laura: There's a pretty good chance we can make room in my cooler for the trainwreck jello cakes.

Whew! That's a relief. We will after all be treated to the sight of Laura arriving, trainwreck cakes in hand, ready for action. So to speak.
I have this vision of L arriving in style in a vintage motorcycle with a sidecar, wearing aviation headwear a la Rocky.
It would be a high point of the FaceLift. But maybe she'll wear her catwoman outfit for the closing dinner/dance. :-)
It's nice to have a plan for people to work to. I haven't heard anything yet from Tim, but like the idea of breakfast each morning - even if a few people have to cook and clean up, and miss some pick up time, overall we're all ahead.

I had a stomach bug for a few days during last year's FaceLift, which caused me to lie low. A few times it caused more than queasiness.
I'm quite careful about hygiene when camping, and don't drink a lot, so neither of those are likely causes.

So, this sounds like a good beginning for a noobie at the "Lift" 2008.

oh man, there is no documentation of nature doing the GHWB thang... but it certainly is believable.
Watching someone pull hard climbing moves way off their last pro in a situation where a fall means injury in the form of dismemberment... that was nature cutting sushi at the end of the night. He is a hardy party dude who enjoys it to the fullest... last seen by me as collapsing into the back of his rig at the end of the night. The good news is that there were no "nature rolls" served, he was bodily intact.
That he might have had some GI issues the next day would be totally understandable.
It was a good time, and nature was the social center of this particular gathering and there was a bubble of good-will surrounding Yellow Pines for the entire time... more Woodstock than Altamont... even though the knives were drawn, and a lot more going on than was or could be reported.
This year will be different in detail, I'm hoping the same chill vibe will engulf that whole scene...

I think that photo of chicken skinner is a bit misrepresented. It was dark so I'm sure the eyes wide open were due to the flash. Though... the elbows flying everywhere speak volumes!
Gee Ed, that's awfully kind of you. Though I played my part I recognize that it takes more than one to have good vibe. In our case there was 100 of us bringing the vibe. I just set the sushi tent up and brought the raw fish.
For the record, the GI thing had nothing to do with the food. I blame the Reverend PeganMonkeyBoy. Well.... him and Christa and Prod (they gave me the first beer of many). The PMB felt it his responsibility to keep the guy with the sharp knives drunk. He did a damn fine job. I really had too much to drink that day/night.
The way it's shaping up the same chill vibe will overtake Yellowpines. I got an email from Tim the pancake man and we're conspiring to feed everyone even more food this year!

"It was a good time, and nature was the social center of this particular gathering and there was a bubble of good-will surrounding Yellow Pines for the entire time... more Woodstock than Altamont... even though the knives were drawn, and a lot more going on than was or could be reported".
Your Sushibar, handy work and good vibes, helped the magic happen. It was pretty funny watching you get hammered, seemed a purging was in order. ;-)

*blush* Thanks Nita....
I'm pretty sure the first night was Tuesday. On Wednesday of last year IIRC we had Royal and Tom and I was at that event. I remember skipping the Thursday event to stay in camp to prep rice, veggies, etc. The "smart" folk decided to skip that night's event as it meant less elbows around the sushi bar (at least early on).
One of the best parts about the event this year is that I'm using almost all of my vacation time from work to be there. That's paid vacation time. I can't wait.
I'm hauling out the All-IN v.2 alone with a super quiet honda generator. I think I'll have another sushi tent so we can really set up a nice mess hall.
Maybe we should sell tickets to allow people to watch me consume. I mean, if it was that entertaining we should be raising money for the YCA, yeah?

"anders..most likely something you picked up doing evening burns on the the lightning..."
I was hoping no one had noticed my midnight mountaineering, though I was camped within a squirrel's throw of ML. It seems to be about M4/M5, and only one figure four was necessary. The combination of Acopa Auroras and Quarks worked quite well. Ice tools plus rock shoes clearly are the future when it comes to mixed climbing, especially as crampons and crash pads don't go well together. There are lots of pre-bolted routes around to try, plus many boulders.
Using rock shoes should reduce impacts, and eliminate theological discussions about heel spurs.
I planned to try ML again in January, this time with crampons to make it all 'legit', but was too busy. The difficulty will be very condition-dependent, but sometimes the snow will provide quite a good crash pad.
Otherwise, I think it was just an ordinary stomach bug.

I must admit there has not been a single SushiFest morning where I didn't wake up and marvel at the fact that all 10 digits on my hand were still with me. I've had a few small bleeders but nothing major. My sashimi knife will draw blood if you just look at it wrong.
I'll compile a list of who's in and for what nights (besides the fact that Brick is IN for all nights) and asking for money mid- to late-August.
And I'm serious about selling tickets or taking bets... the YCA should get stoked up this time around.

Okay - I am IN! I checked airline tix and it seems reasonable and doable. I'll come in to San Francisco and drive from there.
I know pretty much nothing about Yosemite, but of course will do research. But, I do have a few questions I hope I can get some answers on:
Booking campsites - I know Ken has offered to handle for people, but also said "luckily, most of us can fend for ourselves." I feel I should be in that pot.... and will see what I can do, but if anyone has a link I should go to, that would make it easier(duh... thanks in advance).
If there are ways that are ...less expensive... and anyone wants to email me with some beta, that would be great. My email is on my profile. Just click my username to get there.
Tentatively, my plans are to fly in on Monday, 9/22 and be in Yosemite that evening. Heading out on Tuesday, 9/30.
Climbing - Since this will be my first trip to the place, I feel a bit timid. Will I be kicking myself hard for not allowing extra days specifically for climbing(yes, I know that answer already...)? WILL there be time for climbing during the Facelift days(without bailing on the volunteerism, that is)?
Would people suggest coming early or staying later if they wanted to get some days in? Is anyone else adding days that might be interested in taking me around a bit?
Thanks in advance.

Lynne: cool deal on the knives. I hope to do more group food this year. And I guess bring the dancing shoes for Sunday night. Someone else in the group must tango but I sure don't :-)
No Anders, juggling is not yoga skill and it's a good thing. I've long joked that I'll juggle my knives. I turn pale white when I actually consider.

happygrrl... camping might be tight, and I wouldn't be in the Valley that time of year without Ken's offer to provide a camping spot... so take him up on his offer! unless you are camping out in the Ahwahnee hotel... you can probably find a spot somewhere before or after the Face Lift...
...also, this is a very laid back California event, don't go getting all NYC on us and overachieving on the pickup stuff. Relax and enjoy, you can pickup some, and you can climb some, as your desire and guilt dictate.

Happie:
The different areas give you different rewards.
I liked C4 because the language spoken there is english only about half the time. The trash is all very old and finely divided which makes it hard. Last time I was working my way through it when a lovely Japanese lady came up and offered me a couple pieces of fresh melon. You can imagine how fine it tasted. Together, we were doing something.
I like the roads because of the drama and the companionship. The traffic can get scary, like when I saw a tour bus pass two dump trucks on a blind curve. But the two Erics, Jingy, Ed and Crimpie and others all were watching each other's backs. We got to cover large distances and there was excitement.
One of the best times was El Cap meadow. Tourists started helping pick up stuff and it was the best partnership one can imagine. I spent time looking up at the Captain. When I was younger I would come to the Valley determined to do one thing or another. This time when I looked up I was content just to let the Captain be. What came back to me was the Captain was content just to let me be. For the first time, we had a conversation.

Since when did I say anything about my dancing? I'm all in favour of it, but don't have the right genes. I'll just have to perform in other ways at the FaceLift.
As for Jeff... Well, one of his erstwhile police friends has lent me a taser. Should guarantee some nimble footwork.

Mighty Hiker, anyone can dance if you can stand upright and move from east to west and north to south, no worries ...it's easy. Free lesson on arrival.

No can dance. Like everyone, I have my foibles. I hate mushrooms. I don't like nuts in baked goods. And I don't dance, at least not in the usual meaning of the word. Hopefully I have other abilities that will compensate.
If I am seen dancing, it is likely that I have had much too much to drink, and will need a lot of TLC.

Bad news, Jingy.
You're sharing site 30 with me.
Good news, Jingy.
You're also sharing it with jstan.
Mixed news, Jingy.
Bear #46, and his friends, may stay away. Snoring, eh?
Don't know yet news.
Other FaceLiftians may also inhabit site 30.
Reasonable news.
It takes less than 30 minutes to walk from Camp 4 to Yellow Pines. There should be enough of us there that we can car pool as needed.

Happy, that site is large. And let's just say you probably don't want to know who you are sharing the site with. It's better if you don't know.
But be glad that is where you are as that is where the sushi/pancake tent will be set up.
yay for Fishy! Looking forward to seeing you again!

My girlfriend and I did the Facelift in 2006. We didn't know anybody, didn't climb anything, and had a wonderful time picking up trash from the hanging bridge down to a fallen log some ways down.
To walk together along the river, eating wild blackberries, enjoying each other's company with no one else in sight, the
experience is one we treasure today and will for the rest of our lives.
We hope to return this year. I will bring a friend to climb with this time. I look forward to helping clean and maintain a place I have been coming to since 1968.It is an honor to me to help Yosemite regain its sparkle.

Yes, assuming that Fishy (Pete), Sabrina and Finn still live in Switzerland, they'll be some of the furthest to come to the FaceLift.
There was a nice family from New Zealand last year who helped - parents and five kids, who were in the Valley on a US tour. We talked the kids into helping, and off they went. They got to see a bear, too.
NZ must be about as far from the Valley as you can get.

Happie - if you are staying in Yellow Pines, you'll be sharing a campsite with EVERYONE (except those in camp 4). You'll love it there!
