The exhibit opening went very well. Several hundred people showed up for the event. We managed to go through 8 cases of wine and polished off the hors d’oevres that my wife made for the evening. My only complaint would be that it was too short and I was too busy to talk to all the people that I wanted to.
The exhibit was funded by The Yosemite Fund and Royal Robbins, Inc. I gave the Yosemite Fund a VIP walk-through just prior to the opening and they were ecstatic with the results.
Yesterday, 500 people went through the doors in about a five hour period. The docents are excited and said that people are spending a long time looking at the exhibit. If you are up this way, come check it out.
It was great to meet Wally Reed and Peter Haan. I enjoyed seeing Mike Graham again after nearly 30 years.
I will post some pictures after the camera battery is recharged.
Thank you all for coming.

Ken,
Big Congrats! the event was incredible. I got so caught up in visiting that I barely made it in to rapid view the awesome exhibit before they kicked me out.
You should be really proud of your accomplishment, and the generations of Yosemite climbing pioneers owe you a big thanks for putting this rich history in public view at last.

Ken,
Thank you for all the effort you've put into creating something for all the park's visitors to enjoy and simultaneously showing the legitimacy of climbing as an integral part of Yosemite.
The opening was great! Everyone felt welcomed and enjoyed the exhibit. The food was delicious and plentiful, as was the wine.
Thanks again.

It's hard to recognize people after not seeing them for twenty years or more!
I recognized a few. You, Jobee, Bill R., Kauk, Yerian, Mayfield, Graham.....I'm ashamed of how many I may not have recognized. It's been too long.
I sure am looking forward to the facelift. You're an energetic fellow. Congratulations!!

I have some photos as well, but I'll have to post them in a couple weeks when I have some time.
The wine and appetizers were delicious. Lots of smiles and handshakes.
John Muir's tin cup. George Anderson "bolts". Lots of Salathe, Dolt, Stovelegs, etc. gear.
The kids loved where you can play with climbing gear. What an insightful addition!

626 people came in today in 5 hours (the best yet). It is breaking all previous attendance records. 150 people showed up in a 40 minute period after lunch. The docents are saying that they have never seen people spend so much time for other exhibits. There was a pretty good Fresno Bee article in todays paper. I hope you all can see it before it comes down in October. Take care.

Perhaps the American Alpine Club would be interested in co-sponsoring the show, maybe to travel to several locations? It seems to fit with their interests, history and resources.
The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies may be a possibility, although it's more a library than a museum. http://www.whyte.org/ But it might in turn might be supported by the Alpine Club of Canada.
I suppose you could try to link it to the 2010 Olympics, though it's rather a stretch. Still, there will be money around here for cultural things to do with mountains.
Just as long as the exhibit is still in Yosemite during the FaceLift!

Some chump bootied one of my cams from the interactive wall today. It was a two and a half Wild Country Friend with some light blue paint on it and red 9/16" webbing. It is of no real historical significance. It came off my rack and I bought it in 1980. I don't think I have another to replace it.If it was a climber, I hope they use it then return it.

I have an original Wild Country 2.5 Friend, rigid stemmed. Probably from about 1981 - whenever they first appeared. Its trigger wires may have been replace once or twice, and also its sling. If it's essential to the display, something might be worked out. Have your people talk to my people, and we'll do FaceLift.
I suspect there are lots of them around in people's attics and basements, the "gear I don't use any more that may be worn out, but that I haven't gotten rid of" piles.
How are the attendance figures?
Last year, PTPP professed not to know of the FaceLift, although he was in the Valley then, or soon after/before. And now he says he doesn't know where the display is?

MISSING CAM WAS FOUND! I had asked Bernie (Dr. Cam) to do upkeep on them when he is in the Valley. The gear is getting worked just like doing a wall. Apparently, it was too crowded for him to fix it in place. The docent that was in there when I noticed it missing had not been told that he had removed it. So it was a false alarm and my faith in humanity has been restored. Sorry about the false alarm.
Todays count was 855 people in 6 hours and over 2,400 people in the last three days. Ran into Whitmore and Gerberding today.

Anders,
For some reason the highest days have been on weekdays. The average is about 600-650 a day. If it stays at that rate 90,000 people will see it while it is up.
Ken
P.S. On the way home for work, I checked the location of your Facelift site and it is well away from the rest room. They must have changed the site numbers when they eliminated some of the sites by Rescue.

Steve,
I have no idea what happened to the Summit Registers. Richard Leonard's guidebook which is currently on display documents the first 6 or 7 ascents including the first female ascent of Higher Spire by Olive Dyer. I cannot access it right now or I would scan it. There are others here that have a copy and perhaps they could.

Yes, many of us visited - FaceLift HQ were nearby, so it wasn't far. Everyone trooped through, some of us several times. The exhibit is excellent, though there's lots that isn't on display - the room is about the size of a big living room. They don't allow photos, so no TRs possible. Ken has posted photos of many of the things on display, and other things in reserve, on SuperTopo, though.
There are all sorts of interesting treasures on display, different bits of climbing paraphernalia. About 20 display cases in chronological order, each with a sign board explaining what it's about. The famous faux wall, with climbing gadgets for people to play with - a big hit with kids of all ages. Video from an early (the first?) ascent of one of the Cathedral Spires. A one hour video from the third ascent of the Salathe Wall (Steck, Roper, Long - 1964), with modern commentary from Steck and Roper. It was recently restored and transferred to digital format by an AAC project. And so on.
The wording/spelling on a few of the signs needed correcting in a few places, but nothing important - only the persnickety would notice.
I believe the display is only there for three more weeks, and will be moving on at about the time of the YCA art auction, that is before the Nose 50th reunion.

This is a fantastic thing Ken has done. Keeping the magic alive. The history of climbing in Yosemite is the history of Yosemite. Period.
