Like many, I have 1000's of slides rattling around in boxes. I thought about buying a good scanner, doing the scans, then selling it. But from what I have heard it is pretty time consuming to get everything calibrated right, especially for K64. So, I finally got them organized and sent a few off to a commercial service for a test scan. I liked the results and so sent a few hundred that I would like preserved and accessible digitally. For 99 cents per slide they are cleaned, scanned, cropped, and some post processing. He provides 4000 dpi (good for 11 x 18 prints) and you get TIFFS and JPEGS for each. All done locally in So Calif. Just found the service on the internet and I'm pretty happy with the results.
These are all from 20 - 30 year old Kodachromes as I received them, I've not done any additional processing. I selected a mix of shots.
Big Rock, late 60's? (whenever RR's first came out that you can see in the slide)

Got the slides done here.

I think its just a one person operation. The owner, Gordon, will answer any of your questions via email. When he's done scanning he posts a link to the slides for a preview before you pay. A really nice service. Most slides these days are sent overseas. These are done locally and took about two weeks.

Nice photos.
Glad to see that a 35mminimalist has finally found a way to get them On The Net.
Me?
I lamely figured I'd trust my film cannisters to someone else.
I took them to a local shop, and (then?) they were held up in some sort of bankruptcy proceeding for YEARS. I never did get my Son of Heart TR photos from them. The lieyers (fags, all of them) threw my memories into the trash when they liquidated the assets.
A scanner is nice.

My older brother on "The Rings", a nice boulder problem at the time. Nice swammi belt. Again, no lake.
Me on the ledge at the bottom of the flakes. Note the goldline, hip belay, swammi, leeper pins, and state of the art climbing shoes of the time - pre-Kroenhofers.
Me leading one of the flakes. Note the pin damage.

I don't remember what they were called, but they weren't very good! The Giant Step was a lot easier 30 years later with some good rubber!

A nice flashback! I liked it all, and the McKinley tents pitched at Denali really brought back some memories.
McKinley tent (poles) also made very fine lightning rods.

From inside a McKinley, on McKinley. There were nights when we had to take turns holding onto the center pole it was so windy.

Too cool, Don!
Love the shots of Big Rock and climbers in "Kroenhofers."
That "Ring" problem was so good.
There's been a lot of wonderful climbing between those pictures and now!

Phil,
Hey. We've never met, but one of my uncles is Pat Merrill and he'd get a kick out of both these old slides and hearing from you. I'll try to dig up his email and shoot the link his way. If you have it, do the same. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. And if I'm getting the story right, didn't you and him make some home-made hangers in metal shop and put up one or two of the friction routes to the right of the Water Course on Big Rock?

Scuffy - I remember the Kronhoffers well. Anyone who has broken in a pair will never forget them. I don't think the other shoes are Cortinas. I seem to remember them as a little more refined over what I'm wearing in this picture, but that was long ago and I could be mistaken...
With people on ST often posting old slides from their collection (with mixed quality) this thread was meant to be about good results I got a from a scanning service. Its funny how Big Rock gets people going. It meant a lot to many of us in our early years.

Too funny about this thread supposing to be about quality scanning services.
Big Rock adventures + old school = neat to see.

Hey, good to hear from you! I stopped and saw Pat Merrill this summer on my way home from a Tetons trip. He's doing great, and your right I should send him a link to this thread. Your also right about the hanger story. We tried making several different kinds of climbing gear including pieces of 2X4's with hole drilled to use in wide cracks (sort of a non-bong).
And DonC, I find your comment about Big Rock interesting. I agree there is something about the place. Perhaps for many of us it was the place that spawned our dreams, the place where we conceived our goals.
Or perhaps it was just so much fun to be climbing then and there.
Post more pictures! I love every one of them!

Great pix of B Rock before the reservoir. Must've been a really nice setting then.
Good job on the scans-- and funny seeing those RRs looking so new and shiny.
The other shoes do look like Pivettas to me, too. And someone in SoCal must've retailed them, because I've seen other period photos of Kamps and other locals in Pivettas at about the same time.
Other folks did copy patterns, though, so it's possibly another maker with a similar pattern.

Love to see more of those early Big Rock pics, especially if someone has pics of Phil Haney.
Here's one of the earlies ones I have, of Rick Accomazzo at Roubidoux, soloing the 40-foot, 5.7 slab on Joe Brown boulder, circa 1970. Note the Robbins boots, which were the thing back then.

I really think they are Cortinas, and that Don remembers their
successor, the Muir Trail, which was lined and had a padded
scree collar, and the forward part of the upper was one-piece.

Yeah, that sounds likely. They certainly look like the ones I've seen.
The ones in the slab shot are Kronhofers.

Love seeing old pictures ! Thanks ...
I don't need all of my slides scanned, just the best ones, so I did it myself.
I rented a Nikon Coolscan 5000 last weekend for slide scanning. If you are fussy about image quality it is the only way to go.
It has a special setting for Kodachrome scans. It will create jpgs, tiffs and even images using the Nikon raw format so you can adjust exposures with a post processor.
I am now on the lookout for Coolscan on craigslist - should be able to find one for 400 or 500 bucks cdn.
It seems the colors on Kodachrome have not deteriorated at all after 30 years.
