Today is the 40th anniversary of the release of The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. (Actually, June 2nd in the U.S.) Pat has obligingly posted some stories of climbing in the Valley in 1967 on his 'obscure history' thread. Before my time, but perhaps others have stories of climbing and Camp 4 and the Valley in 1967? A trip in the wayback machine - flashbacks also ok.

Mae West was asked if she'd like to be on the cover of the album, and famously replied "What would I be doing in a lonely heart's club?" But in the end she agreed.

MK............I remember well, very revolutionary shift for them. Went over to my climbing buddies house to listen, we were 16 without a clue as to how much of a dramatic change for society was upon us.

I think Werner's saying that all we need is love. But maybe there was something in his cereal this morning.
Rumour has it that in 1967, DaftRat was busy avoiding being drafted into the U.S. or the Israeli army. He was down at Haight & Ashbury, getting good vibrations, seducing hippie chicks, smoking up, and going to anti-war demonstrations. When he wasn't busy working for Eugene McCarthy's campaign, that is. And tuning in, turning on, and dropping out.

So forty about years ago I was at the Altamont Speedway at the Rolling Stones concert where the Hells Angels where killing some dude near the front stage.
As the Rolling Stones play "Under My Thumb" ..... the Hells Angels did just that. I saw ....
The "Summer of Love" wasn't it.
Those were the days my friends ...... flowers everywhere, and long beautiful hair -
Shining, breathing, and flashing through the air .....

i think 40 years ago my dad went to the valley for the first time. two years later, in 69 i believe he went for the first time to climb.
while im not that young, i can safely say i was still far from a thought at that point!
not sure though ill have to ask him.

A few days ago I was visiting my 92 year old cousin in Mayfair Tower and said it must be nice living next to Yoko but just far enough that you don't have to hear her singing.
She had no idea what I was talking about, but sure knew who John Lennon was after he was shot in front of the building next door.
As usual there were Lennon fans posing in front of the Dakota and placing flowers on the "Imagine" mosaic in the part of Central Park across the street known as Strawberry Fields".

I lived in the Bay Area, had a '58 VW bus with curtains on the windows. I liked to go to the concerts at the Fillmore, before it became the Fillmore West. Great concerts. What a trip. Crazy people going crazier in the City.
Hey Werner, Altamont was a real letdown wasn't it? The sound system was so bad, so many of the musicians could not carry a tune live, the Hell's Angels were menacing and ultimately deadly, the druggies were wasted. Who would want to be a hippy with that? Better to go climbing.

"Summer of Love" Not in Detroit, My folks wouldn't let us play outside because of the racial riots and burning. I remember watching out the front window and wondering about Maltalf cocktails...nice time.....
I was taking to a guy that works for my wife that graduated from Berkely at that time, he said the first year( 66 or 67) was fantastic but by the second year of the summer of love it had already become commercialized.

I loved the 60's.
You could stick your thumb out and instant ride from hippy.
You could even get lucky and get picked up by a Ted Bundy or Mr. Zodiac.
The cops just loved me in Nevada. I made them have to chase me out of town because of the no hitch hike rules.
He he he, they could knott keep up. I could run fast and jump high.
Those were the daze. You all missed out. Too bad.

Missed out hell, Werner. I did six road trips to Florida, and a summer in the Alps returning on Swissair with five purloined sticks of dynamite in my checked bag!
Those were the days alright.

Yes, I know these dates Walleye.
I was there in the height ashbery and saw many hippy's.
They gave me the "look".
One hippy thought he was God. He tried to stop the commuter train by standing in the middle of tracks. He gave the train the "Look".
He failed ......

ya, ya, ya, we all know what happened.. BUT, a lot of good things and thoughts happened too, and the possibilities coming out of that time pointed the way to a new direction.
There were things that were real bummers, bad things... but not uncommon when you get those sorts of excess.
All in all, I think it was a good thing.

About Altamont, I thought it was Sympathy For the Devil they were playing, at least that's what it showed in the movie. Keith playing on oblivious until Mick made him stop. Unless they killed another dude too. Always thought it was just the one guy.
I was five in 67, but I'd already heard Revolver and liked it a lot.

I don't want to get into an arguement with Werner, but I would say that interest in eastern philosophies were a part of the whle 60's scene... you can argue that it wasn't very serious, but it did initiate serious thought.

40 years ago I made the first free ascents of Try Again and Coexistence. They were the hardest climbs in the Gunks for 15 minutes until Stannard did Foops.

40 years ago, maybe not, today, I climbed the hardest climbs I'd done till then. Just conjecture, cause I think, you probably climb harder at 10, then earlier.
But I remember, for sure, my mom talking about how wierd it was that there was a song on the radio about a yellow submarine.

The Lucy of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" has now been identified. For many years, some have suggested it was simply a thinly veiled way to say "LSD", i.e. acid. John Lennon, the other Beatles, and others involved have said it was named after a painting by John's young son Julian.
It turns out that Julian Lennon had a classmate named Lucy Vodden. Ms. Vodden says the painting was of her, and that Julian simply invented the name in response to his father's queries.
I have a collection of fine art by young nieces and nephews, and friend's children, and it seems plausible to me.

Looking forward to a good listen.
However, I purchased the album as a 10 year old and listened to it pretty much as my only album for 2 or three years so still a little burned out on it. Might not be willing to invest the time and money in the new release.
SPLHCB Reprize still the essence of heavy metal. Perhaps the very earliest manifestation.

Sorry Anders, but I'm hijacking this thread slightly because I'm going to see Roger Waters at the Tacoma Dome on the 24th.
While the Beatles were in Studio II at Abbey Road recording Sgt. Peppers, Pink Floyd were next door recording Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Apparently both groups had some affect on each other and their music was influenced accordingly.
I only wish I could have been there.................
