what it looks like when a tree falls on your buddy's back deck
what it looks like when part of that tree goes through the second floor attic and partway into the kitchen
what the yard next door looks like once everything is done falling down
I've been in some earthquakes, including the large '94 one in LA, I've been splashed by lightning, I've done things to my brain that took a few days to recover from - but the 12 hours of that ice storm when the trees kept groaning, breaking and falling were the freakiest thing I have experienced in my life.

Naw, that is Microsoft's Virtual Earth, they are trying to catch up with Google Earth. It's not as good in some instances, but it's a nice compliment to Google Earth....

snake -- I specialized in Cannon for a few years, way back when I had more energy, but later decided it was kind of far to walk. Nowadays I'm looking forward to Whitehorse season, maybe just another month?

Wes--The cardinal flying could win you an award. I was just at the NAMPA annual conference and some of the winning entries were far less dramatic and technically precise than yours.

Thanks much for the kindness. It was a nice afternoon for sure. And it doesn't hurt to have a target rich environment along with plenty of CF cards. There are plenty of one and zeros that got deleated when I was going through the cards.

TwistedCrank -- when I was little I had bad dreams not about monster skulls but about clowns. The 20-foot-tall kind that might be just outside the bedroom curtains, looking in.
snakefoot -- after some trips, I'm surprised to find so many pictures of statues. The good ones seem expressive, centuries after their sculptor turned to dust.
This gentle face wants to say something, I think, about young men dying. She reigns over a museum of war.

Thanks much! I have a couple, small bird ID foldouts now. Need to get a better book sometime soon, I guess. Added three bird feeders to the back yard, and have a bunch of "regulars" now, mostly various Sparrow's, some mourning Doves, Red Winged Blackbirds, and a billion goldfinches (they are Thistle crackheads). With an occasional special guest of a cardinal, a couple house (or maybe Purple?) Finches, and some other little guys that I haven't gotten a good look at. Will try to get some photos of them soon...

On a December stroll in the Picos, we reached a col -- came this blast of cold wind. S braced for it but with icy footing, L was knocked down. As I took the photo S is laughing and L holding up her scarf in the wind, so the picture will show how strong the wind was.

Yes, this is actually a photo. It was taken with a lensbaby lens, which is what gives it the distortion. I lightened the yellow a bit in hue/saturation and that's about it.

Wow! Scary sh#t, L! Glad you're OK! I remember reading about the ocean waters of Australia being the deadliest and that there are like 10 things that can kill you as soon as you set foot in. I think those were in there. The blue-ringed octopus, sea snakes, etc... Scary place, but beautiful! I still plan on going, regardless!

There were sharks everywhere! There'd be like 50 people, then a shark, 50 people, shark, and so on. I never realized that there were sharks intermingled with the people like that.

My daughter and I went snorkeling once at a crowded beach near San Diego, hundreds of people jumping around in shallow water. Stick your face under the water and you see almost as many stingrays, mixed in with the forest of feet. That was an amazing sight. Don't know how the rays put up with the people, but the people got by on pure ignorance as our kind often does.

sharks rule! i love going down to florida and shark fishing on venice or nacomis beaches during a buzy day. people just flip when you pull a 5' blacktip onto the beach right past their kids. bwahaha! its almost more fun than the actual fishing part!

Nef--That reminds me of a funny story...which I'm gonna bore you with
because I have no friggin' incredible photos to share like you,
Mooser and Chiloe.
Picture this: Spring break. Fort Lauderdale, FL.
A million college brats (I'm one of 'em) spending our days lying in the sun,
drinking like there's no tomorrow,
and living off the appetizers at happy hour.
It's the year after Jaws--the movie--was released.
About noonish, I'm swimming way far out from the beach.
(Florida shallows can go almost half a mile out...and I was probably
a quarter mile.) The water was as crystal clear as the sky, and the
sandy bottom beneath me as white and clean as the beach itself.
Being a long-distance swimmer, I was getting a good workout in and loving
life right then.
As I leisurely headed back towards shore, I caught the movement of a
dark shadow in my peripheral vision.
A big dark shadow.
It was following me.
My blood ran cold. It's a cliche, but that's what it felt like.
Cold blood in my veins.
I started swimming faster.
That thing sped up, too.
It was easily, effortlessly closing in on me.
I was in a full-blown panic now, swimming for all I was worth, the horrifc
image of that poor girl, devoured at night and left for crab food,
screaming in my air-deprived brain.
I couldn't feel my arms. My lungs were bursting.
I thought I felt a snout gently tap my flailing feet.
Finally, I couldn't swim anymore. I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't think. I was going to die. Or at least lose a leg.
And then an arm. Or two.
I turned around in the waste-deep water and shrieked at the Great White:
"Go ahead and eat me you muther focker!!!
Just go ahead!!!!"
Then I saw...
it was only my shadow
reflected on the perfectly clear
white sandy bottom.

As we were snorkeling last month, everybody'd get excited whenever a shark came by. "There's a bigger one over here!" Those weren't the man-eating kind, though. Lotsa rays and 'cuda but the charismatic-megafauna highlight of that trip for me was swimming amid a small flight of squid who flashed neon color-changes in unison as they passed. Wonder how they do that, and what they were saying.

Doctor Who wasn't home, but we looked.
Fletcher, the pumpkin boy is great. Mal's desert nights reminded me how those feel. Snakefoot, mooser, nice water imagery.

We're in old Bodega. (Directions are on my site: http://www.jerrydodrill.com); I think the Fishermans Festival is happening that weekend over in Bodega Bay, just a couple miles away. There's some good climbing nearby, and some crappy climbing if you prefer.

You're quite right, my Greenland shot above was Narsaq. In the same season as yours of Uummannaq -- early September. The fjord was just starting to form grease ice, which looked like water but crackled wierdly as the boat moved through.

Helicopter? No problem for us.
We were fine, only slightly delayed by an unexpected storm the day before. The chopper were surveing all major routes for trapped "clients", and hoovered the pillar from bottom to top.
This is me contemplating the escape possibilities in case the storm continued (which would have been a rappel down the face, down the couloir, over the glacier, down valley to Cham - in friction shoes, as all gear was stashed and unreachable at Flammes des Pierres...)

Tomcat and I finally got dsl this week and I've been waiting to post these pics. I've been scuba diving for the last 5 years in the Caribbean and my favorite diving is at night, different critters and some great photo ops.

Here you go:
This is 1 very pissed off moray eel that got caught in one of the cages along the reef. We went back the next morning to let him out, but the fishermen had already taken him.
This is a pic of me down about 80 ft. adding air to my bc. That is the reef and sun above me.
Another pic about 30 feet cruising along a reef that was turned upside down by Hurricane Gilbert.

Chiloe,
The Cliffs of Moher or Aillte an Mothair, (or Aillltreacha Mothair) is part of Western Clare home of traditional Irish music (stop in at Doolin if you are ever there) and geologically is part of the region known as the Burrens. Its an extensive limestone area, or karst. Its almost entirely limestone except for some areas of shale and mud.
Due to uplifting and the numerous ice ages the hills around the area were scoured and exposed leaving some very interesting formations.
These cliffs are quite impressive I think and except for all the tourist, its a 'grand' place to hang. I'd put it on your list if you or anyone else is in that part of Ireland. There is much to explore both geological and historical.
You can also see the Aran Islands from there too (M.R. RIP).
Jebel Shams in Oman is also almost entirely made of limestone too while I'm on the subject. An increadible amount of climbable rock is on this planet...

Thanks for the info, DD. I've never been to Ireland, but should do.
It's not Faroes geology at all, then. The Faroes are old layered volcanics, like the (geologically) colder parts of East Iceland. There's an infinite amount of stone both those places, but most of it not climber friendly.
The northern Atlantic is a cool place in general.

Yes indeed, that's "Fred" from our SD days, seen here fairly near where your traffic jam was.
I have fond memories of Fred, who never was quite civilized.

Every Winter in Butte they have an ice sculpting contest. While Molly and I stand no chance of winning, we enter for the "couple's therapy", ie.. fighting and arguing in publc (not really).
A local furniture store drew us for their carver(s), and we unexpectantly came to the event and found 2 blocks ready to carve (we usually co-carve for the kid's convenience).

I looked into those pics and they're from research teams in Africa. They were worried about the sharks going after kayaks but discovered they were just curious and left after checking them out. More from the researchers...

I've been getting into sea kayaking a bit over the last few years, and Whitey's always in the back of my mind. Those South African fish are used to much smaller prey, but in California, they hunt BIG elephant seals. I spent five fall seasons on Southeast Farallon Island (off San Francisco), working for the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, and studying the white sharks was a big part of the gig. They're definitely inquisitive critters, but I don't think I'd be too quick to pet one on the nose like that. One thing's for certain, they can make short work out of an elephant seal (and yes, it's that red; they have super oxygen-rich blood).

Yeah, Jaybro. It’s fun to hang out in the middle of “nowhere” Nevada… That boom above was cool but not NEARLY as cool as last January… An F-22 Raptor ripped past me as I sat in my truck on a dirt road one evening on the NE side of Nellis… He must have been cruising the highway at low altitude and picked up my truck on radar (etc.) because by the time I heard him, he was cranking a hard left turn and was “on it”!! KA-BOOM!!! He broke the sound barrier, which sounded (and felt) like a bomb went off behind my truck. The roar of (relatively quiet) jet engines filled the air and the Raptor quickly turned into a black dot that soon disappeared over the ridge. I love that kind of stuff! BAD ASS!!!

I think there are SEC teams that play hockey, but at UK it is a club sport - they usually play at midnight. For a while, it was the 3rd or 4th sport in attendance, but that might not be the case anymore.

While in Wyoming this past summer, my daughter entered a rodeo in which her friend regularly competes...apparently the bales are quicker than they look.
And, the city-slicker beat out the cowboys/girls for the buckle.

Museum, that looks like fine snowshoeing fer sure. Nice open Western forest, too.
On some trips over deep snow in the East, we've met a "hobbit trail" effect. The branches are so dense overhead
that with four feet of snow on the ground, it leaves only a low tunnel to hike through --
you have to crouch down under the tree-ceiling as you walk.
Makes it all the more wonderful to break through on a rocky summit, though.

A few years back, a storm brewed while
Chiloe was mid-pitch on what turned out to
be the send of the trip. With lightening
crashing all around, he reported that the
metal button on his hat was humming.
After the storm (and the send) peace returned.
And Chiloe appeared to fine the next day...
but there were some residuals (like "looking"
through his camera with his ear).

What with my feet blowing off and almost falling dangerously far above pro, reaching the belay with no
air left just as lightning struck the butte and the downpour began but I couldn't get down with one rope ...
felt close enough to the send of a lifetime!
The rainbow afterwards seemed cosmic, though. And I felt unreasonably mellow as you negotiated that hairy
drive through mud down the mountain.

Yes, this was an odd find indeed! Was drivin' out US 50 near Austin, Nevada and struck upon this here tree bearing strange fruit. Drove about a half mile yonder, contemplating weather it was fact or mirage, when the little "Go Back" voice crept into my ear. Best I can figure, this tree is on a long pilgrimage and kind hearted passers by offer their shoes in generosity. If trees could tell stories, this one would either be quite good or really stink.

3 months. Despite having two or three of the best meals of my life the rest
were pretty awful. With high hopes I descended upon Helsinki and started
walking around to check out which restaurant I would grace with my ravenous
presence. It seemed odd to me that there should be so many Italian restaurants
there. I finally went into one of these ravintola joints and asked them why
there wasn't any italian dishes on their menu. I don't recall a McDonalds
in Helsinki back then but I see now that they've gone italian too.

I'm told this particular ravintola is the world's most northern McDonald's, but I wasn't going in. Instead we sought restaurants noted for Lappish cuisine, which especially means reindeer.
