Hi Eric,

Welcome to ST.

A welcome post makes it seem as if ST is a little formal, which it is not, but you are one of the few 60s climbers who has posted, so a little notice is in order.

As you see, Peter Haan has posted some great stories and pictures, the sort of thing that keeps some of us hanging around, hoping for more.

All the best, Roger

Glad to learn of your presence here. Always remember your fine ironic sense of humor when we went climbing in the Meadows in the middle 70s.

Did you really use the UC main frame to play the stock market way back then? Indeed, you were a very advanced player!

Welcome Eric. What are your recollections from doing the Kor-Beck on Middle Cathedral in 1962? There has been lots of story telling about climbing on that formation and I'm sure any day spent with Layton Kor is likely to be memorable! Double coup on this one with the FFA a few years later with Mark Klemens (1966).

Eric, do you remember that day we climbed at Twin Owls years ago and went up some 5.10 crack. That was a beautiful day, clear and gorgeous, and sticks in my memory, and your acute intelligence and spirit...

'Hope you find some friends, old & new here at the taco stand.

We've all had lots of fun and burned quite a few hours in remembrance & laughs here on line in this forum, largely owing to the fact that: at either end of an internet connection, there lies a leisure class.

In the early 70s, after Eric had 'retired' from cutting edge hard stuff, and I was near my prime, Eric came up to the Valley from Berkeley. I talked him into looking for a new route on some forgettable slab in the lower Merced.

Eric asked, "Why?"

I thought that since there was no route on the slab it was worth a look. Eric sort of begrudgingly went along. We found a place to park my car and bush whacked to the base. There was a corner system, but it didn't look too interesting, but we were there and had to either climb up or bush whack out. So, I led the corner.

It was a sunny, nearly perfect day in the Valley. And it was great to be with Eric again.

The route? This is the first time I have told anyone about it.

Come on, EC. Post up.

Best, Roger

Hi Roy,

It's not Parkline. I am guessing it is above and to the west of the Cookie. I am traveling or I could probably look at pictures and figure out where it was. I am stuck in Newark Liberty airport for six hours on my way home from Germany. I missed the earlier flight by 5 minutes. Airport bars, wireless service, and SuperTopo--a staple of life.

Airport bars, wireless service, and SuperTopo--a staple of life.

sounds like my trip back on Thursday, from East Lansing, MI... where we were delayed and I missed my ORD-SFO flight by... 5 minutes...

No wireless that I could find in the "Capitol City Airport" and no bar... but then it was early in the morning... even my 2 way pager couldn't connect.

But once at ORD I could connect again.

Welcome home Roger!

Hey, there's a useful off-topic topic: In what airports, and where, have you discovered *free* wireless?

I had a bunch of long delays going to and from Tromsø last month, but had to pay through the nose to get online. Are there hot bars or coffee shops at certain hubs?

in like '98?

something like that...

we climbed some fine stuff that day at Deerhorn,
including African Queen 10a, and another day at Woodson
where I barely managed to TR Drivin' South, probably
for the last time in my life, my favorite climb ever:)

It was primo.

Fond memories of climbing with Eric.

Little composition from an ascent in the Valley of Phantom Pinnacle circa 1960 with Eric and an epic with his shoulder. I believe a first experience for both of us with the trials and tribulations of dislocation and relocation.

It was really cool to see Eric and Russ climbing really well.... at the hills.

With all the young fresh faces at the crags now days it was really fun to watch the grey-hairs sending the rad lines in fine style.
