A flash of instant recognition laying along side complete blanks with hazy recollections floating past. The worst of losing your memory is being aware of it. For all of my life, "I don't know," brought on no doubts or judgments; now it is all risk.
In the first batch, all seem obvious except 3, 4, 6. "You know, the guy with the beard." I think that 6 looks like Boche.
In the second batch, I don't recognize as many. The first looks like Ken.
The middle guy in the second picture looks very familiar, but I am drawing a blank on his name. I think he was a school teacher and visited Toulumne in the early seventies, but no longer climbed. Is that Michael Cohen with Jim in picture 3? It looks like you with Roper in picture 4. I thought of Vern as birthday boy and Galen behind the hand, as did Brian.

Mouse, Yes, yes, and no: BD boy, hand , and see Rollover below.
Guido, #3 in which batch? Either way, no!
Rollover, Yep, it's Beryl.
Breedlove, try gain. You must offer a name on #3, #4, and #6.
In 2nd batch: #1 is Ken, you're still owing on #2, #3 not Cohen with Jim, #4 right on, #5 think sewing machines, #6 is the Vern, #7 who's with Rowell, #8 you didn't name her.
Rollover, yes it's Rowell behind the hand.
Tom, yes Valerie in one, and Michael with George Sessions.
Hennek, You're kidding, of course.
Puppo: Come on Tony his mom has a home in Desiderata ... you're not even close.
It's late and keeping track of group #1 versus group #2 is confusing. If you think I've erred, let me know. Meanwhile let's go decimal and identify photos by groups, e.g., 1.4 #4 in group 1, 2.6 #6 in group 2.
I can hear Guido whining already ... hey, I'm an fccking engineer, what did you expect?

Don, regarding the rating system and the unidentified pretty girl, 3.4 should be 3.4R.
Also, I am not sure what to make of the picture of TM: long hair; a bit more weight, post-Jan. How would I have known given the disguise. That is nearly as insidious as putting beards on people from long-ago.

Roger,
Took TM out on my sailboat with that only girl friend ever. She got seasick, a squall came up and I had to give TM hasty instructions on reefing the mainsail and dropping the "headsail". Sorry, Guido, it's been 36 years. She got sicker.
Needless to say, that was their second to last date. It took one more for her make it clear, "It's over!."

Pete Nelson standing, mustache and hat, Sierra Club member.
Next to him, you are hiding (a bong?) behind the old man's shoulder.
A very young Alan Nelson, seated second row, hat and Rx glasses, RIP.
I don't recognize any San Diego RCS members or even peripheral RCS hangers-on from that time period. Surprise me. A couple weeks ago, I happened upon an RCS roster from the early 1970s while sorting old papers.

Juan, left of Pete is Mike Weegee, he was an RCS guy. I think the couples on either end were too, but I don't remember the names, though BVB had a few down, but everyone except the wee children went climbing that Thanksgiving weekend 1973, my first real time out climbing, I think it was Alan's too. Pete's wife (Eileen?) in front, Alan's older sister Karen and younger sister Katie next to him. I think I was climbing in Lowa Scouts, goldline tied with a bowline on a coil. The Sierra Club Rock Climbing Section was a great intro, some good folks. I took a belay class with them that was quite challenging and confidence building, taught me to trust my hip belay.

Off White, I wonder if maybe some of those guys were in the Mountaineering Section rather than RCS? There was overlap between the sections, and also with the SD Mountain Rescue Team. I recall Mike W. had an untimely death, maybe just a year or two after this photo; heart attack, iirc. His wife Jolene(?) climbed some with the RCS. That might be her seated in braids. I recall her dark hair always braided like that.
So you caught the concrete block hurtling out of the pine tree at Guymon Lodge? A rite of passage!

If that is indeed Doug Tompkins white hat in 3.6 (as suggested by Boo Dawg), then this helps identify the stunning blonde woman, whose delightful derriere we see: Leila Kessler. She used to hang with Tompkins and Chouinard. Set many a heart racing ...
Don't believe that is myself at far left in 4.6 at the Cohen wedding. I did, however, own a coat and tie so that is helpful.

I thought that this thread was originally billed as 'Prior to 1967'....... More interesting times!
No prizes for identifying JB in this shot. (Prior to 1967 of course.)

Chris,
Yeah, sure has the right haircut - could be Schmitz.
I think the guy with his back against the tailgate is Gerughty - again, the haircut.
Hard to tell if the standing lean-in is Kor.

Correct on Schmitz in Pic 3.
Pic 1: Not the back of Gerughty's head. This truck was headed for L.A. one late Sunday afternoon. I don't know who it was, but I think it was another Scottish climber. Give away hint: The guy talking to Yvon is older than and has more FA's than Kor and is still alive.

Yes, it's in Yos. No, it's not Lloyd Price.
Hint #1: He has a younger brother, who also climbs/climbed.

^^^^^^Answers^^^^^^
It's Dave Bircheff on Higher Spire. P1
For some strange reason, which now eludes me, Dave and JB were wearing the same shirt. Perhaps it was a two for one, or maybe they boosted them on a dare.
Here's JB on P2.
Later that day, as we were walking back along the road to C4 with ropes slung across our shoulders, an approaching car slowed to a crawl, as the occupants checked us out. Chouinard's face loomed large in the passenger window. We could almost hear him saying "Who the f*ck are those guys?" He and Herbert had finished the FA of the Muir that morning, and were heading for the fleshpots. Deservedly so! We stared back in awe.
The torch was beginning to pass.........

It looks like I am flogging a dead horse here. Ah well. Apologies are due to to the OP for hi-jacking his thread. Sorry 'bout that Don!
^^^^^ "Hint #1: He has a younger brother....." ^^^^^
Dave's younger brother is of course Phil Bircheff. The two of them subsequently teamed up with the late Jim Pettigrew for the FA of Lurking Fear.
This is Phil (you'll have to trust me here :))on the top of Phantom Pinnacle, an excellent 5.9 route. Phil was only 15 or 16 at the time, and he easily led the 5.9 pitch. According to the Red Roper there were then about 35 5.9 routes in the Valley, and only one 5.10, the Crack of Doom. Phil must have been one of the youngest, if not THE youngest to lead 5.9 in the Valley, and very likely on the continent as well. Most impressive.
Here's Phil starting the first rap off Phantom Pinnacle, a very exciting experience. We used the long sling around the waist and between the legs, with 6 biners method. It was all free, and you landed in the branches of a tree. Very exciting!!
Phantom Pinnacle is an excellent climb, but the approach will likely deter many of today's climbers.
Good times.
