With all of the photo threads going these days, I thought I’d share some of my favorite wall climbing images to try to help keep this place on track (but I guess we can’t help ourselves from the OT fun stuff…). Hope you enjoy the images. (Apologies to the dial-up-ers.)
Climbers on Zenyatta Mondatta, El Cap, 1997
Roger Strong in portaledge, on the FA of Summerland, Yosemite Falls Wall, 1999
Roger Strong on the FA of Summerland, Yosemite Falls Wall, 1999
Eric Kohl on the FA of Hurricane Jingus Clusterf*#k 2000, Yosemite Falls Wall, 1997
Eric Kohl on the FA of Sky is Falling, Porcelain Wall, 1998
“Captain Kirk” Bland on Tribal Rite, El Cap, 1999
“Captain Kirk” Bland belaying “The RURP Pitch” on Tribal Rite, El Cap, 1999
I skipped all three lead bolts on this pitch for fun.
Scott Burk on the free variation on the Salathe headwall, El Cap, 1999
Roger Strong on the FA of Summerland, Yosemite Falls Wall, 1999
Eric George cleaning “Agent Orange” on the FA of Strange World, Porcelain Wall, 1999
Eric Kohl on the FA of Sky is Falling, Porcelain Wall, 1998
Eric Kohl on the FA of Max X, Yosemite Falls Wall, 2003
These aren’t the greatest slide scans and I posted these before I knew about adjusting levels in Photoshop.
Click on the following link for more info and photos about the above routes on the Porcelain Wall:

Wall climbing takes you places you just aren't going to get to, any other way. Though I suspect there are other ways into the infrared spectrum.

Minerals that’s a very cool picture of the Kamikaze Cracks. When I first led that on a failed FA attempt (that was our high point), Bill Price leaned back cleaning the pitch and ripped about half a pitch of tied off blades out. The rock had a very flint-like edge to it that was harder than a whore’s heart. No matter how hard I tried to beat them into submission they wouldn’t really penetrate. Never really experienced rock like that before. When Bill went back to finish the route the blades sunk in where the prior scars were and were bomber.
Sorry no new photos this round...too lazy to break out the scanner n slides.

Cool, more photos!
Hey, thanks guys. Nice photo, Mark, and cool location. Neat bit of history too. What else ya got? Rich, where is that wall? Looks like a view.
Double D, I didn’t know that there was an attempt and that you were in on it. Interesting, and nice job on that pitch! It took me quite a while, and that was after the pitch had seen several ascents. It’s a fun pitch that gets your attention. Were there ever any hangers on the ladder bolts above the Devil’s Tower? The bolts were 1/4” thread-heads with a nut and no hanger in 1997.
Correct, Jack Herer. I think it is Native Son in the photo. Good eye.
How about this one?
I’m not sure exactly which routes these are without a guidebook handy (I’ve forgotten), but have an idea. Help us out, modern wall rats.

Honestly the only thing I remember was leading most of the pitch in the dark with a headlamp which leads me to think that Mike Borris, AKA "Big Wally" who first scouted the route and had done some of the first pitches, probably drilled the bolt ladder leading up to the knife-blade-fest after the Tower. Otherwise I would have surely remembered drilling all of those bolts. This was also a full year prior to us pioneering the use of 5/16" SS machine bolts for dowels which I would have selected over bolts any day.

Double D, killer photos! Thanks! Guess you decided to break out the scanner n slides after all. Looks like it was a bit windy in that pic of Dale – nice. Can’t beat the history in those photos! Oooooh, Sheba! Shhhhhh…
I was just wondering if those ladder bolts originally had hangers and then someone swiped ‘em. You led the Kamikaze cracks in the dark, on the FA?!?! Yikes!

That is the lunar belay at the end of the Milky Way pitch. PSD goes to the same belay. BUBS is farther right. Not that any of this matters but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this.

Don Brooks moments after he ripped a chunk of his beard out in the rappel brake setup.
The "Other Don" leading the pitch off the Ahwahnee ledge.

Big Wally (aka Mike Borris) on an early attempt of BUBS. There's a suspicious looking implement in the hand of one blonde guy in the foreground which leads me to believe that Bill Price actually took the photo.

Hey Steve, it was still fresh. Bill Price did the 2nd, some guy from Colorado did the 3rd, we talked to the guy when he got down, but I can't remember the his name. Maybe somebody out there knows. The first time I did " new school " A4 was Zenyatta in 84, man what a difference. Some A4's and A5's are real close. Sea of Dreams just never let up. I totally dig the Mayfield rating system "DFU", if you miss, its not going to be good. It is what it is. That is only my opinion.

I am pretty sure that I remember this correctly about the 3rd of the SOD.
Rob Slater, who did the FA of the Ranch with Barbella and later died on K2, went up with Randy Leavitt. Randy fell on Hook or Book and broke his ankle or something.
Then they rapped down and Slater nabbed Mike O'Donnell and jugged back up and finished it. O'Donnell could tell hilarious stories. Good thing he was a super nice guy, because that guy was a physical animal. His neck was as big as my thigh and he was solid gristle.
He used to torment me when I did something stupid around C4.
Robbie was a great guy for anyone who knew him. Totally funny. I can still do a perfect imitation of him. He is still missed.

Bump for another great wall thread!
I remember seeing a super badass photo of Klaus soloing right up a dry yosemite falls, Reign in Blood I think. But I can't find it now. Anyone know what I'm talking about? It's taken from above and he is looking up (yeah that really narrows it down). It was a great picture.
