Hey Zip thaks for wasting your time on a reply like that.
FYI, I did search the forum real quick before I posted the question. I typed in the search bar- help posting photos, and got a bunch of non relitive stuff.
Ed, thanks for the help.

Wasting my time with a reply like that?
Dude, what are you talking about? I was trying to help you out.
I wanted to know the same information, so i went to the search the forum box and typed in "how to post pics" and i got the answer. That is why i suggested you do the same thing.
So, why the hostility?

Zip,
you really need to be a little more compassionate. Until Steve gets those implants removed there are just a few days each month when he gets a little testy.

It took me some effort to figure out how to post photos. Crimpergirl helped a lot - as always. But if I can do it, so can anyone.
Anyway, I sent a note to Jello with instructions, and as it seemed to work for him copied it to the others making enquiries. Here is a paint by numbers method of posting photos, which works for me. I'm sure there are other methods.
1. Have photos on your hard drive, either from digital photos or scans.
2. Make sure they're reasonable e-size, not more than a few hundred kilobytes. (To find out, right click on the image. One of the options will then be "properties" - left click on that, and you'll learn the size.) A photo of more than that size takes forever for people with dial-up to download, plus ends up wider/higher than a standard screen and so impossible to look at.
3. Go to Photo Bucket (www.photobucket.com), and create an account. A basic account is free, and all you should need. You'll need a user ID and password - don't forget to record them somewhere, for later.
4. Once you have a Photo Bucket account, sign in.
5. A box saying "upload videos and images" will appear, including a "browse" button. Click on browse. You can then choose an image from your hard drive. (If there are several images, click on "add more images", and keep adding.)
6. Once you've selected the image(s), click on "Upload". Photo Bucket then essentially takes the photos from your hard drive and puts them in its memory.
7. In a few seconds, the photo (mini version) will pop up at the bottom of the page (try scrolling), together with gobbledegook about url, tag, and image. Also icons to move, edit, delete or share. Ignore all that. Click on the tiny box beside the photo's title, in effect choosing it. Then go to the very bottom of the page and click on the tab that says "Generate HTML and IMG code".
8. After a few seconds, a new screen appears. It contains five boxes, for different versions of the photo. Go to the fourth box, the second from the bottom. Click on that box, choose "select all" from the "edit" part of the main tool bar, then choose "copy", also from the "edit" toolbar.
9. Your computer now has in its memory a reference to the photo, in the right size. A "tag".
10. All you need to do now is start a thread, or post a reply to an existing thread. Type whatever message you want. Then put the cursor in the place you want the photo to be. Go to the "edit" toolbar again, and click on "paste". That sticks the tag in the place where it'll be in the message. Not the photo itself, just the tag - a reference for the ST server.
11. When you actually post the message, and it's added to the thread, the photo magically appears - the ST server knows where to look for it, on the Photo Bucket server, and puts it in.
All the photos that you upload to Photo Bucket sit there, so even if your computer is turned off, they're there for people to look at. For practical purposes a photo on ST is in the public domain - if nothing else, Ouch may add a bear to it.
Ain't that fun? There are other places you can do these things, but I'm told PB is simplest.
Now get on with the posting, already! More climbing related posts always welcome.
Anders
ps If you select multiple photos in Photo Bucket, and click on "generate html", all the tags will appear in the fourth box. You can copy and paste them into a message, but they'll be in the reverse order from how they were on the page. There must be some way to change this, but usually I just move them around manually.

I like to set my photos at 700 wide and 500+ high, so they don't require scrolling for most people.
I also find that saving it at 100kb is plenty, even 70kb works and loads quick.
All my slides seem to benefit from some lightening; then sometimes some contrast boost and resultant color saturation down tune...

This is only a test. No dolphins were harmed in this test.
I've been wanting to learn how to post pics too. Sorry if its rude of me to use your thread like this for practice.

Mighty Hiker...mighty fine, except your making it harder than it has to be.
That "gobbledegook about url, tag, and image" is a shortcut that
makes your steps 7 and 8 unneccesary.
Below the thumbnail of the photo that you want to post where it says
"image", you just copy the text in the box and paste that into the post.
That IS the "tag" to your image. That's why Photobucket has it there!

Thanks, Shack!
Well, I never claimed to be an expert on this. Learn something new every day.
Now I have to find a photo and give it a try.
It wouldn't surprise me for a micro-second to discover that there's some even simpler way.

Johnboy, I think your right about this being a good place to practice, apparently it takes practice!
Getting my photos the right size without photoshop is the hardest part.
Hey Anders. Any experience useing .mac and a photocast to resize photos? I know it works, I did it for the photo I posted above. Some of them step by step instructions would be handy.

I have Microsoft Photo Editor. Open the photo. Click on the "picture" toolbar. One of the sub-choices says "resize". You can then choose length, width (in pixels), or overall size. Or simply down or up size something by a stated percentage.
Again, I'm no expert, and I'm sure there are different and maybe better ways.
If you do resize an e-photo, save it separately from the original, otherwise the original will be lost.
I don't know what .mac and photocast are, but have a funny feeling I'm about to learn.

Wolfs Head, Wind Rivers
Finaly figured out how to downsize photos on my mac without a special photo program. Just in case anyone else is as illiterate as me I will attempt to explain how.
In iphoto select the photo you want and then hit the email button. It will ask you what size to save the image at. Choose small.
Then ctrl click on that photo on the mail page and select save attachment from the drop down menue.
I like to save mine to my desktop. It seems easier to find them later on when it's time to upload them to photo bucket.

As an FYI: Photobucket will resize your photos for you, too. Just click on the photo - it's one of the editing options (along with rotating).

Aya, Photobucket only lets you to upload photos that are 800 x 600. What if your photos are bigger than that?

Never answered the question:
If you upload a really big photo to photobucket, it resizes it for you.
If you want it smaller yet, you can do it via photobucket, as well.
No real need to mess around with other photo editors.
