CathC,

By "Me too!" I mean that it makes me feel young again too! Certain people on this forum have inspired me to start going through my own photos which I may have never done.

The following is a picture of myself learning how to place pitons and aid climb for the first time. It is the second pitch of the Fracture at Sugarloaf and was taken around 1973 or '74. I remember running out of pitons and hexes near the lip. I went for it stepping out of my aiders and it was desperate turning the lip and free climbing for about 20 feet to an anchor below a small roof. The rope drag was horrendous and made the easier lieback above the roof almost as hard as the inital moves stepping out the aiders below the roof.

During my first visit to Yosemite I did some climbing on the Apron with my stepfather in 1972. On the drive out I made my parents stop in El Cap Meadow and wait while I ran up to the base of El Cap and touched the stone while looking up. I decided right then and there that I had to climb this thing. My life focus had been diverted.

Yeah Wonder,

I was pretty hip most likely sporting a macrame belt. Wasn't hip enough yet to have the sense to wear Robbins boots for aid climbing though it did pay off when I ran out of gear at the lip.

Misc. picture of an older climber!

Easy bouldering problem left of Horseman at the Gunks. No serious boulderer would get caught dead, or in striped socks, on this problem.

Trad, He looks more concerned with his leggings instead of his foot work.

David, it was a pleasure to climb with you as well.

Ken, the footwork was easy. Like V000-.

This picture (of me) was taken by a guy who had his noob GF up and a rental pad from R&S. (The "leggings" were added by a SuperTopo fan, hoping for an autograph.)

We had been playing on TR on an awkward roof, hand traverse, crap feet problem, at the opposite end of this feature, flailing and "penjiing" and basically bowling for anything walking or driving down the carriage road.

Peter,

I think you are right, it is Worral. I remember meeting him at the cafe in 1976 and we both looked at each other thinking we had met before. After talking with him for a bit we figured out that we both lived on Arenas Street in La Jolla about a block apart when we were kids. He was a few years older so we didn't really hang out then. Was a bizarre coincidence.

Hate to be pedantic, but in formal address it is "Lightning Slings Williams."

Eric Beck chided Steve for climbing an aid pitch so slowly--probably La Escuela Direct (A4, 1969). Steve looked down and responded: "Lightning slings Williams here." The shortened name stuck.

Someone told me something about Steve recently. Maybe Jorge. It would be good to here from Steve.
