The Needles, Gorge of Despair, and More Tuesday, September 9, 2014 7:30 PM, Griffith Park
Kris Solem had been climbing all over California for more than three decades; Stoney Point, Tahquitz, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Courtright Reservoir, Church Dome, The Needles, etc. Name a crag in California, and Kris has probably climbed there, maybe even put up a route or two. His cur- rent project is a future guidebook for The Needles, which is due for release this fall. The book will feature rich history, compelling photographs and, of course, the routes. If you ask though, Kris will tell you that the best rock he has seen in California is at the Gorge of Despair, a wild and remote area of Kings Canyon.
Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at the SCMA General Meeting, long time climber Kris Solem will be sharing photo- graphs and climbing beta about Califor- nia crags; near local favorites, as well as the farther away and more remote. Starting with a brief coverage of Joshua Tree and Idyllwild areas, the program will then move on to Courtright Reservoir whether Kris was involved in the devel- opment of a fair number of new routes. The bulk of the program however will focus on The Needles, the subject of Solem’s future guidebook, and the lesser known Gorge of Despair in Kings Canyon. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about old favorites and new areas you might want to visit, and to ask this seasoned veteran questions.
The meeting will be held in the audito- rium of the Griffith Park Ranger Head- quarters in Griffith Park, 4730 Crystal Springs Drive, Los Angeles. The meet- ing starts at 7:30 PM with some brief general club business followed by the presentation. There is no cost to attend and members as well as non-members are always welcome to come and see what the SCMA is all about.

I thought Kris was going to get a severe scolding by the Sierra Club members for NOT having a bear can on his GOD trips. It got tense there for a few minutes but turned out ok.

So you caught that too, we never had one.
We just did the tree hang, when we could.
Never had a problem, Kings Canyon Bears are not like the YV ones.
The show was fun, I remember - before the Internet, when getting together like this was a regular thing.
I hope we can get Kris and others, to do more shows out at JT. and other places.

If I was not working on a long term project I would repeat some of your GOD routes this fall. Maybe I will in any case, or next year for sure. Every time I see that place on the horizon driving out of CK I get some butterflies in my stomach. What are the formations over on the other side (just North?)? Some huge rock spires up there..

V .... I think you are talking about ... The Cobra, The Corporalie (SP), The Commandante (real bad SP) ..... side of the GOD. I know nothing about the canyons that lie to the east, paralleling the GOD.
if you mean the stuff due north, like across the middle fork of the Kings, that is Kettle Dome and the hidden Blue Canyon, and the Oblesk.
big rock everyplace.
NOW is the time to go to the GOD, the place gets lots of T-storms in the spring time.... summer is very hot, we found that the best time was "Rasin Season" .... those 4-5 weeks of very settled in stable weather before the winter stuff starts.
