On the advice of a couple of friends, who apparently entertain more easily that Heidi & me, we tried watching an episode.
I couldn't believe the characters, and I've spent plenty of time around redneck culture. Heidi bolted after about 5 minutes, but I lasted most of the episode, wanting to believe that something that matched my low-life sense of humor might appear.
Never again. Do people like that actually exist?

I think the point here is that one needs to understand that the senior Mr. Robertson is basing
his opinions on ONLY his personal experiences.
For examples, because he is a heterosexual and very probably has never spent any time reading or even trying to understand homosexuality, he therefore makes conclusions with very limited information.
Same with "blacks", because he personally ONLY witnessed "happy" black people working in the fields he concludes that well, they are just fine, and their lives were ok and happy and all this
"welfare" like food stamps and stuff just really did no good and did not makes their lives better.
And that really is the issue, isn't it?
Mr Robertson, like so many other people, comes to sweeping conclusions effortlessly and easily,
because it is easier to do that then spend the time and effort actually learning and questioning.
And by choosing to have a lazy intellect, he is going to hear other people exercise their right of free speech by calling him uninformed, misinformed, and just plain ignorant.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that quote before, only the one about his Christian beliefs as it relates to gays and bestiality.
This is the quote being discussed in case the article gets moved or disappears: (On growing up in pre-civil-rights-era Louisiana)..."said that during his Louisiana childhood, he picked cotton with African-Americans before “entitlements” and “welfare” came along, and never saw “the mistreatment of any black person. Not once.”
“Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers,” he told the magazine. “I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field…. They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”"

Ron Anderson, defender of bigotry and ignorance!
The dude compared homosexuality to adultery, rape and bestiality. I'm sure he's laughing as he's suspended.
I'm all for it - I think he shouldn't be suspended. If you are ignorant, please - be ignorant. As publicly as possible. I hope he draws a line deep in the sand so that people who share those ignorant beliefs are seen as the disillusioned children they are.

It's no more offensive than your typical night on MSNBC or The Daily Show.
But it's offensive to different people. Those worked up over MSNBC could care less about what Robertson believes and vice versa.
The truth remains, it's entertainment, and lots of entertainers have lots of beliefs that are out of the mainstream. And I admit, I consider those beliefs in selecting by whom I choose to be entertained.
He can say what he wants in the U.S., and his potential viewers can select whether or not to view him based on what he says. To that extent, at least, it remains a free country.

No. That's not a firm thing John. All of us have (differing) limits on what we consider acceptable speech. This isn't as bad as some of the White Power BS, not even close. But it shows a certain dullness and lack of savvy on Phil Roberstons part. Norton said it pretty good up thread. Norton said: "Mr Robertson, like so many other people, comes to sweeping conclusions effortlessly and easily,

couch, the Constitution puts the limits of legal speech quite broadly. The nature of freedom of speech is to protect offensive speech, because inoffensive speech needs no protection.
I don't find this an issue of freedom of speech, though, because I think A&E has every right to discontinue a show of anyone whose speech they find unacceptable, in their sole discretion. I have that same right, by choosing to whom I listen or watch. Put differently, I may have no right to prevent someone from saying something I find unacceptable, but I have every right to react to unacceptable speech by judging the speakers by what is said, and boycotting interaction with them.

Roberson is talking out of his @$$, which is pretty common in those circles. The Bible calls it teaching a false gospel and you probably can assume what the bible says about THAT (not good).
Homosexuality is only mentioned in the bible seven times, and all of those are in the old testament, and not one mention of gay marriage. Jesus never said a single thing about homosexuality. One might even assume from his silence on the issue that it wasn't a big issue for him. In contrast, there are hundreds of references by Jesus on economic justice and the laws governing the accumulation and distribution of wealth. Hmmm.
I debate Christians a lot and am always surprised to learn how many of them are ignorant of what the bible actually says. You would think that if you were a Christian and if the bible was the inspired word of God that you would at least want to know what God had to say. That always puzzled me. It's also puzzling how they can go back and forth on whether or not we are supposed to follow stuff in the old testament. If it suits them we are, if it doesn't suit them we aren't.
Here's a few verses from the old testament that might interest Roberson, who likes to eat frog legs and crawdads. According to the bible it's an abomination, but only in the old testament. I know, it's confusing.
Leviticus 11:9-13
These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Ekat what do you think Archie Bunker would be thought of today lol!;-)
The "All In The Family" show used Archie Bunker's bigotry to HIGHLIGHT the offensive nature of bigotry. Carrol O'Connor was not a bigot in actuality, and it was well known during the time that he was playing a character with with the purpose of breaking down the barriers that had been upheld in this country over the years.
Here is Carrol O'Connor doing an interview, along with Jean Stapleton( who played Edith Bunker). You'll notice that neither of those two seemed to need to "stay in character" off stage.

Why is it the activist gays are the only group all butt hurt over this?
Whiskerino lumped a bunch of others, like adulterers and drunkards, onto the same sinner totem pole he put the gays on.
But you don't see swinger groups ( adulterers ) or anyone in the alcohol industry butt hurt over being called sinners.
Walk into any bar, and tell the people getting drunk there that they're all a bunch of sinners, and their answer will be "so what?".
Why can't the activist gays say "so what" when faced with the same accusation?
The gay activists need to butch-up, and put their big-boy pants on.

Happiegirl...he was booted off his show....hello!
Ah, I see.. I think. I thought you were referring to comments from people here on this thread.
Cragman - Remember when CMac FINALLY pulled the threads with boob picture because his advertisers pulled their ad dollars? Not because CMac thought there was anything wrong with the objectification and/or misogyny that was so obviously associated with many of the posts, but because he was losing money.
It's a similar thing.
Supertopo- a privately owned enterprise with an owner who is allowed to make his own choices.
TLC(or whichever TC station ran that Duck Dynasty show - a privately owned enterprise with an owner who is allowed to make his or her own choices.
The man is not being arrested or charged with a criminal wrongdoing.
Let's turn this on an angle. Suppose you have a new preacher in your church. He comes on and says some stuff which people are sort of like "Hmmm. well, I'm not so sure about this new preacher. I mean, was he saying it was okay for the alter boys to pee on the hosts before communion because, boys will be boys and urine is really sterile so it wouldn't actually HURT anyone?" (just an example)
And more instances like this happen, where the congregation is beginning to think "Maaaaybe hiring this preacher wasn't the best choice...."
Then the preacher is asked to do a radio show, a local community show not associated with the church or religion in any way really. The preacher is being interviewed about patience, as part of a show where the focus is on dealing with family members who are testing one's patience.
in this interview, the preacher brings up dogs. He says something like "Well, dogs are just stupid, and being patient with them makes no sense because they can't learn anyway. I mean - dogs lick their own balls, for crying out loud! And then he says "I sure the hell would never have a dirty smelly dog in my house. I think it's okay to dump an unwanted of on the side of the road. They'll either live or die - no big deal. But of course make up some story for the benefit of your kid who asks why Fido hasn't been around. The kid is probably not old enough to understand how bad dogs are, and we are discussing being patient with our family memers here..."
Would you think the congregation ought to leave what's said alone, or do you think they should tell the preacher - "we don't feel you are the best representative for our group anymore?"
Edit: And I am sorry if reading about a dog brought up sadness over the loss of your beloved Cush. I miss Teddy every day myself, and using the dog example was not intended to somehow...well, I don't know!

Cragman....yes, he voiced his opinions, but, as a public figure, it was stupid to pubicly say what he did. He was fired by his employer who feared adverse publicity. His free speech rights were fully protected, no government agency made any move against him.
The fact remains that he suffered because of capitalisim....his, for profit, employers feared an adverse economic situation should they keep him employed.

I'm having a tough time finding exactly what Whiskerino said that was offensive to anyone who isn't just looking for something to be offended by.
He says guys are naturally attracted to gals. Can't argue with that. You and I being here is proof of that.
He says he can't figure out why a guy would be sexually attracted to another guy. Is that so far out there? Plenty of gays can't imagine why anyone would be attracted to someone of the opposite sex.
He included drunkards on the same shitlist the gays found themselves on. Whiskers ( sorry, I don't know Hairy's name, and I don't feel like looking it up ) looks to me like he's either a heavy drinker right now, or was a serious drunk at one time. ( I'd bet the farm on that, having worked around drunks most of my life, I can spot them )
If he said something I missed that should outrage reasonable people, please highlight it for me, as I've honestly missed it.
That only one or two groups - out of the several he spotlighted - feel butt hurt tells me those groups want to be butt hurt.

There is no PC Movement. It's fiction. Made up by Fox, Limbaugh, et al to excuse any type of offensive behavior.
Right wing, tea party extremist and their willing accomplices in the media have moved the dial of what is acceptable to the far, far right. That, if anything, is ruining the country.

If it was a business deal to fire Phil, they would fire the rest of the family as well. This is no secret on their personal/religious beliefs.
And if it was simply business, than why are all you folks mad about a guy you never listened to or watched?

"Yeah Chaz, this is about Obama. Be sure to bring up Obama. It's always about Obama."
The right thing to do is still the right thing, even if just done recently. I wasn't trying to take a shot at Obama.
I figured Obama would serve as an excellent example, being a well-known progressive, of someone well into the Twenty-First Century not "getting it".
Some places aren't as enlightened as Washington DC, so it may take them longer to get it than it took our President.

"Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash," he said. "They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."
So, Q and Cragman can't figure out why this is offensive. Basically, he's saying that blacks under Jim Crow (a level barely above slavery) were better off. No problems, no trouble, just do what the white man says and accept your status as a second class citizen.
Cragman is outraged! This man's constitutional right to sell tv advertising spots has been taken away! The nation is in peril! Pray to Jaasuss, one and all, for we have gone down the path to degradation!!!!

And I'm sure that at another time, you would have said that if you don't like lynching blacks, don't buy white sheets.
but we purport to be civilized people, living in a modern society. To have people have a national stage to spew forth this sort of hate and misunderstanding of Jesus, and to say nothing about it, gives up those responsibilities of citizenship. Mr. Robertson simply stated his opinion
Cragman, you are really lost. I know you don't care what I think, but, man, how can you believe this? You have read his comments. According to you, there are no workplace standards, any employee can express any deplorable, offensive opinion in a national publication, offend millions of people, and the employer has no right to reprimand their employee (he was suspended, not fired).
I am of the opinion, (yes, I know, you don't care), that you must mostly agree with him.

Cragman- I see it different. I grew up in the country, climbing trees or picking up rocks from our garden was my childhood. I was happy, never new the troubles that were in Washington. Now I am an adult and many folks on supertopo seem to view that as a bad thing.
I also grew up with many colored folks and we were best friends. This racial divide still hasn't started between the farmer/locals, it is still a city thing now.
Calling us ignorant and racist is hard to respond to because I don't see color when i shake a man's hand.

A little girl at our orphanage in Ecuador wasn't getting adopted because of the color of her skin. I never saw her as a little girl of color....I always saw her as another beautiful child that simply needed a family to love her.
I love the fact that now I get to see her as my beautiful daughter.
Would you have taken a young boy who wasn't getting adopted because he was gay into your family? Would you see him as your son?
Same deal. None of us had a choice about the color of our skin, and your view seems to be that because there's no choice, skin color doesn't matter.
So why can't you see the human inside the gay skin? There's no choice there either.

There is no shortage of people who rush in to profit. Hannity sees $$ signs and ratings, Palin sells book and Cruz gets political donations. They feed off this nonsense.

O.K. I have been watching this show since two Thanksgivings ago when I was subjected to an A&E marathon in a cabin with my girlfriend's family. I can kind of relate it to a prior experience when I watched a 24 hour marathon of Dukes of Hazard which ended in some friends finding me on the sofa in a semi-catatonic state. All I could say was "Each episode left me feeling dumber and dumber"
A&E originally approached the Robertsons because they thought they were a bunch of dumb rednecks that could fufill the criterea of a reality program which includes conflict, drama, foul language etc. Once they found out these guys all had college educations, were devout christians, valued family values, etc. the network started to have second thoughts.
Then they discovered the Robertson's wacky Vietnam Vet Uncle named Si and the show took off from his antics and one-liners. Here is one of the sons Jase Robertson talking about how the show came about and the family's dislike of the entertainment industry and reality programming. If you really do not like the Robertsons skip to the 6:30 mark.[Click to View YouTube Video]
After the show became the #1 reality show on T.V. the Robertsons had some leverage to re-negotiate their contracts and to introduce more of their religious beliefs and an additional brother (who is a pastor) into the show.
Phil Robertson has been planning on leaving the show since July. http://www.today.com/entertainment/duck-dynasty-patriarch-phil-plans-leave-show-6C10765762 So basically this event has been a final attempt for him stick it to A&E.
I do not agree at all with Phil Robertson's views on homosexuality or race but I have found following the program and viewing it as part of the development of popular culture makes it truly interesting. Just for the pure fact that these guys are trying to throw a monkey wrench in reality TV.
