Surly LHT (best deal out there). its a tank and rides nice.

tools

4" crescent, set of allen wrenches, two lightweight spanners that each cover all 4 sizes, metal tire irons, spoke wrench. ultra lightweight cluster removal tool. 6 extra spokes. some grease, chain repair snap links and a chain tool, small screwdriver. extra cables and brake pads. One extra lightweight folding tire and two tubes, some extra bolts for racks etc.

all up I carry between 40 and 50 lbs of gear (excluding food and water), stove, tent, sleeping bag etc. tools, books, extra clothes, rain gear, electronics (tablet, gps, ipod)....

Two and a half weeks into it now. Dropped into the Amazon basin this morning in pouring rain. Wore a poncho, cycling shorts, and flipflops. Ha. Everything soaked but warm enough. Tomorrow I have a 5500 foot climb over 30 kilometers, (with my 100 lb vehicle) back up into the mountains at Pasto. Then two days to Ecuador. Everything has been going smoothly so far - with the exception of getting pick pocketed in Bogota. I didn't need that damn IPod anyway. Ha

Made it to Ecuador. Maybe some photos to follow. One nice downhill run yesterday, from 10000 feet down to 4000, 30 kilometers. no need to touch brakes nor peddle for the entire 40 minutes. Man, 100 lb bikes with fatty tires sure do the downhill well. Sweet. Of course in Colombia down hill is ALWAYS followed by a big climb. Back up at 9000´now. lol
No FARC to be seen in all of Colombia, nor paramilitaries. ha

“So the journey is over and I am back again, richer by much experience and poorer by many exploded convictions, many perished certainties. For convictions and certainties are too often the concomitants of ignorance… I set out on my travels knowing, or thinking I knew, how men should live, how to be governed, how educated, what they should believe. I had my views on every activity of life. Now, on my return, I find myself without any of these pleasing certainties… The better you understand the significance of any question, the more difficult it becomes to answer it. Those who attach high importance to their own opinion should stay at home. When one is traveling, convictions are mislaid as easily as spectacles, but unlike spectacles, they are not easily replaced.”

Rode my bike to 16,000 feet elevation this morning on the shoulder of Chamborazo (highest mountain in Ecuador). (since my camera was stolen, and my tablet c#m camera broke, I am resorting to stealing images off the internet. lol That and asking complete strangers to take a picture of me and email it to me. The results of this second tactic are yet to be realized. ha ha)

met two 20 something girls last night, who are biking northward on basically my route. We exchanged maps and tips and stories. ha They've been on the road for 4 months, starting in southern Bolivia. No big troubles to date, though I do worry about them. And they are both riding old beater bikes. I admire that. I'm on a $1200 Surly which is a beautiful and dependable bike, but is also always a worry. But then my bike is cheap compared to what some of the Euros are riding on this trip. Like $5000 plus custom touring bikes. I couldn't sleep with that much bling on my neck. ha

My bike, a Surly Long Haul Trucker, (with super heavyduty Schwalbe tires) has been doing incredably well. No problems to date except a couple of bent chainwheel teeth from hitting a rock hard. I borrowed some pliers and a file a it cleaned up pretty well. Only two flats to date after 3000 kilometers with my steel belted tank treads. :)

This is my first trip with BMX style peddles and Im loving them. In heavy traffic, when a dog is chasing you (daily occurance) and when you hit a patch of deep sand on the gravel roads- all are easier to manage with free feet. And I can wear whatever shoes i want. With the little sharp spikes grabbing my rubber soles there is little loss in efficiency.

Rainy season is starting here in the Cordierlla Blanca. Haven't been able to see any of the big mountains yet due to clouds...

Camp at 15,300 feet while crossing Huascaran Nat Park. Crossed 16,000 ft pass next morning. That's a huge icefall in the background though the picture doesn't due it justice. 3" of heavy snow during the night though most had melted by morning. Chased by at least 30 dogs over the course of the next day as I cruised down to 7000 feet. My foot did connect full force with one of them which sent him flying thru the air. But for the most part I think the dogs had a lot more fun then I did.

Every long distance cyclists nightmare. Looks like this guy lost his bike, gear and passport in an armed robbery on some back road in Peru. Fortuneately I'm past that section, but its certainly a heads-up...

He's offering a $400 reward for return. I hear the victim is from Poland.

Delhi Dog, what were you doing in Puno? Thats where I am right now. Really like the town. Kind of reminds me of San Francico. Steep hills, houses packed tight wall to wall, and the views of the water (lake Titicaca). :)

Good Question...
Nov 10, 2013 - 11:19pm PT
Bummer about the dude losing his bike!

Puno-sheesh I was there in 1965 as a young kid with 2 brothers.
My dad was working a project through USAID.

We lived in a house with a tin roof and mud walls for 6 months then moved into a pretty nice pad, only flush toilet in town at the time.

I went to a local school speaking Spanish in class and Quechua with my buddies out and about on the streets.
The University (at least I think that is what it was) was just being built if I remember correctly. I do remember having rock fights with the local builders as we passed on our way to school.

Always wanted to get back there. My eldest daughter was there a couple years ago just to "see where dad lived" and liked it too.

I'm sure in many ways it is very different though the same as well.

We did a lot of fishing and horseback riding up in the higher elevations as my dad spent quite a bit of time with the locals and we little guys got to tag along.
My mom hated the place and we moved once brother number 4 was on the way.

Thanks again for the pics...post more if you can.

cheers

Someone upthread asked how my bike was holding up....Well in the first 5000 kilometers I had two flats and one broken spoke. Then yesterday, 100 klm outside of Salta Argentina my wheel rim split open. I think I did my rims in way back in Columbia downhilling in the mud. Wore out my brake pads and had metal on metal breaking for awhile. Anyway I consider myself lucky to have made it this far. Now I find Argentina doesnt exactly have great bike part supplies. Looks like two weeks and $200 to order new rims from Europe. Meanwhile Ive got the flue so it looks like rest time....

75 kms without shade, 114 degrees, I sucked down 5 liters of water before reaching the next ice cream shop. Scarry hot.

Finally Patagonia and the Carretera Austral. 1000 km of gravel.... now its all green, cool, and rainy.

Yes!
These are the shots in the arm I like to have!

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a touring bike myself, and it has been fun to vicariously take the road with you Rocker- err, Peddlemike!

Did you change your saddle? I see what appears to be a change in one of the above photos...

cheers

Mike! You've got just about the best thread going here. Thanks for the updates! What panniers are you running there?

Shoot me a pm if you want to hit anything in the High Sierra again when you get back. And make sure to find some of the undeveloped termas along the carretera austral...

Ed: Also, not sure how often you make time for side trips/hikes, but the hanging glacier at Quelat is well worth it... Beautiful ice cascading from a cliff ensconced is dense, cold rainforest... I'd never seen anything like it.

Thank you for the update!

Lago General Carrera is a long way to go in that time frame. Over 400 miles in a straight line and there is no straight line.......

Have fun and enjoy the scenery. I've been on the roads you are on now and they are a treat! Wash board gravel and the wind will be the best part..

Thanks all for the encouagement. Im happily surprised.
Im riding on a spongy wonder no-nose saddle now. Ive got prostrate problems and this definately helps. My panniers are Ortlieb. Tubus rear rack and Old Man Mountain front. Schwalbe marathon plus tour 2" tires. Three flats so far so Im happy. Did I mention lots of rain? Ive seen more virgin rock in the last two days then all of Yosemite valley. For those who havent been here - this section of Patagonia really reminds me of the North Cascades.

Jim Donini, are you near route 7, or further to the east?

RM...we arrived in Coyhaique today, going to the house tomorrow. We are on the SW shore of Lago General Carrera just East of Puerto Guadal. We are on highway 265 which goes East from 7 to Chile Chico. Our front gate is on the right just after the 15km marker. Truly beautiful because you can look back at the mountains.....better view of San Valentin than anywhere on 7 and just 15 km diversion.
If you get this far before we leave a hot shower, good food and maybe some kayaking, fishing and climbing awaits you.
The turn is about 260kms South of Coyhaique. Your last photo looks like a place about 300kms North of Coyhaique.

Crossing Straight of Magellan to Tierra del Fuego

Road side selter (bus stop actually). Did a good job of blocking the rain and 100 kph winds for the night.

Another shack/shelter. This time ocean front facing the south Atlantic. Winds gusting over 100 almost every afternoon. First I get blown off my bike, then when walking I get blown off my feet. ha

Two days more riding if weather cooperates.. otherwise who knows...

Dood! Whaddya stopping for? Winter's coming fast! You going to Ushuaia?
Be sure and take the day tour to Harberton* to see the pinguinos - it is
totally worth it! The museum there is also excellent.

*If you ride yer bike down there (30 miles S of Ushuaia) I'm not sure they would take you out,
but they might out of pity. ;-)

Oh, and if it is pissing down and blowing a ton and you want a nice cheap
bed, with a roof and breakfast, the Hosteria Ailen is a good value. It is
a few kliks west of downtown towards the Nat Park - prolly 10 minutes for you.

The Lost Tribes of Tierra Del Fuego

Darwin in Patagonia: http://www.victory-cruises.com/yagan.html

http://thamesandhudsonusa.com/books/the-lost-tribes-of-tierra-del-fuego-selknam-yamana-kawsqar-hardcover

A German missionary sent to Tierra del Fuego in 1919 by his congregation, Martin Gusinde was a major Americanist and ethnographer from the first half of the twentieth century. While his mission was ostensibly to convert the native peoples among whom he lived, Gusinde did just the opposite, eventually becoming one of the first Westerners ever to be initiated into the various sacred rites of the inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego. In the course of four sojourns made between 1919 and 1924, from the canals of Western Patagonia to the great island of Tierra del Fuego, he learned and wrote about the Kawésqar, Yamana, and Selk’nam peoples. Gradually, the missionary became an anthropologist.
Fascinated by what he saw, Gusinde took more than one thousand photographs, all produced using a portable darkroom. Gusinde captured some truly extraordinary images that his contemporaries were unable to: feather-clad bodies sporting high headdresses made of bark, wrapped up in guanaco furs, or entirely covered with ritual paint, populating a landscape battered by wind, rain, and snow—the heart of a natural world that Darwin had celebrated, not long before, for its wildness. A dazzling visual experience, Gusinde’s photographs are a monument to the memory of the Tierra del Fuego people as well as an exceptional anthropological document.
